Market Friday: The Five-Foot-Way Market Of Kuching

image.png

When you think of entrepreneurship, you probably picture a college dropout in a hoodie, running a startup out of a garage. While that kind of entrepreneurial spirit is incredible, it's also worth taking a moment to appreciate the microbusiness. These are small operations run in the streets and on street corners all over the world. While they don't get nearly as much attention as the latest app to come out of Silicon Valley, they play an important role in the local economy as well as the lives of their owners.

Walk along the "kaki lima" (five-foot way) in the streets of Kuching and you'll see a unique marketplace. Here, vendors sell everything from traditional Sarawakian snacks, vegetables and fruits to modern cell phones. Here, you can find clothes and household items. While others may see this as an eyesore, this is what gives character to Kuching and at the same time provide premises for microbusiness owners.

Here a wide range of household items is available.

The display of clothes, shoes and other items add color to the five-foot way of Kuching

image.png
Here you can also shop for handphones, start-up packages and pre-paid cards.

Some plants add a dash of green to break the monotony of the five-foot way.

image.png
The majority of the five-foot-way market in Kuching is operated by women who come from nearby villages. They take the bus early in the morning carrying their vegetables, fruits and other wares from the villages. They return home daily before the last bus. This shows the grit and determination of these women to put food on the table for their families.

image.png
A close-up of the range of vegetables, fruits and other items which are bought from the surrounding villages. A number of these vegetables are grown by the Dayaks and as such are not available at the supermarket.

These women are just one example of how microbusiness is impacting the local economy, especially for those with lower incomes. Microbusinesses like these street-side stalls are increasingly important for people who want to earn above subsistence level wages but don't want to work for a large corporation or invest more money than they already have into starting a business.

Microbusiness doesn't just benefit the owners, however; it benefits society at large. These businesses help locals preserve their culture and identity in areas that are being transformed by globalization and changing demographics. By supporting local microbusinesses, you'll be helping your neighbors earn a higher income, put food on the table, and keep their own traditions alive.
In addition, since the prices at the five-foot-way are cheaper, the lower-income group can save money by buying their daily necessities here.

Whoever is directly controlling the V2K told me to kill myself.
They told me if I killed myself now it would save the lives of countless others.
Saying the longer I wait to kill myself the more people will suffer.

They are reckless and should have shown the proper media what they had before taking me hostage for 5 years. I know there are many in prison that dont deserve to be there because of this. Your stay in prison will not be fun @battleaxe and friends. People are going to want you dead when they find out what you did. I hope you die a slow painful death. You sick mother fuckers.

Its a terrorist act on American soil while some say its not real or Im a mental case. Many know its real. This is an ignored detrimental to humanity domestic and foreign threat. Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and tell them about the day you asked me why. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control with ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers from telling the truth?

I miss this sight. We don't see this type of market in Semenanjung. These sellers work very hard, and they often come very early in the morning to open their stalls. I like to buy from them instead of supermarkets, and I don't haggle because I know they don't make much.

Yes, don't haggle with them but support them instead. The prices are already very low. I admire their determination and grit.

Those women are strong figures that sometimes they can take their children graduate from universities. In Indonesia, there are kakilima sellers who do not want to stop theri job even their kids have been successful in works and business. Their kids often ask their mom to stop from being kakilima sellers.

I do love microbusinesses! You are right! Their contribution to the economy is twofold. they are providing a much-needed service for those looking for more purchase power and they are helping support the entrepreneurial spirit of these women looking to make a difference for their families. Bravo to them!!! Thank you for giving us an inside look at it! For people who do not know where Kuching is, it is in Malaysia.

#MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through their markets, especially local markets and farmers' markets, and eventually branched out and evolved over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, and even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact that is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

Great post on microbusiness and how it's often the backbone of communities. When we visited Vietnam we spoke to alot of thee women sellers who came in to Hanoi from the country areas trying to sell baskets of products everyday to support their families. We always paid too much in the hope it helped in some small way.

Hats off to these women who are working hard to provide for their families. You show great understanding in not haggling down the prices. Thank you for your feedback.
