International Students Cooking Day: Cultural Exchange Edition! || Día de la cocina para estudiantes internacionales: ¡Edición de Intercambio Cultural! (ENG-ESP)

I remember back in college, there was this year I schooled as a foreign exchange student in the United States. It was one of the best moments of my life.

Recuerdo que, en la universidad, estuve un año como estudiante de intercambio en Estados Unidos. Fue uno de los mejores momentos de mi vida.

One of the activities we did was an International Students Cooking Day. On this day, all foreign students were expected to cook one of their country's native or local dishes and display it during lunch.

Una de las actividades que hicimos fue un día de cocina para estudiantes internacionales. Ese día, todos los estudiantes extranjeros debían cocinar uno de los platos autóctonos o locales de su país y exponerlo durante el almuerzo.

We had all types of food that day. We had sushi from Japan, Anticuchos from Peru, Baklavas from Turkey, Halusky from Slovakia, Khao Soi from Thailand, Paratha from India, Irish Potato Porridge from Nigeria, and so on.

Ese día tuvimos todo tipo de comida. Tuvimos sushi de Japón, Anticuchos de Perú, Baklavas de Turquía, Halusky de Eslovaquia, Khao Soi de Tailandia, Paratha de India, Gachas de patata irlandesas de Nigeria, etc.

It was such an awesome day. For the first time ever, we were granted access to the cafeteria kitchen and we all had so much fun cooking together.

Fue un día increíble. Por primera vez, tuvimos acceso a la cocina de la cafetería y nos divertimos mucho cocinando juntos.

I had to make do with the available ingredients as there were no familiar African ingredients to use for the cooking exhibition. Funny thing is, the food still came out great.

Tuve que arreglármelas con los ingredientes disponibles, ya que no había ingredientes africanos conocidos para la exhibición de cocina. Lo curioso es que la comida salió muy bien.

I remember my dish was one of the first to finish that day and It was such a proud moment for me. Also, we played music from each foreign country represented there while lunch was served.

Recuerdo que mi plato fue uno de los primeros en terminar ese día y fue un momento de orgullo para mí. Además, pusimos música de cada país extranjero representado allí mientras se servía la comida.

We took pictures, danced, laughed, sang, even had mini karaoke sessions, and ate as much as we could. It was truly a memorable day.

Nos hicimos fotos, bailamos, reímos, cantamos, incluso tuvimos mini sesiones de karaoke, y comimos todo lo que pudimos. Fue un día realmente memorable.

I tried to taste every dish from all the foreign countries represented and I actually think I ended up in the toilet that evening but it did not take away the magic that was created that day.

Intenté probar todos los platos de todos los países extranjeros representados y creo que acabé en el baño esa noche, pero eso no quitó la magia que se creó ese día.

My takeaway from the experience was to appreciate other cultures, we might indeed have our differences but we are truly similar in more ways than we can ever imagine.

Lo que me llevé de la experiencia fue apreciar otras culturas, puede que tengamos nuestras diferencias, pero somos realmente similares en más aspectos de los que podemos imaginar.

I was going through my photos this evening and I came across these pictures that I took on this day and it brought me so much joy. As I scrolled through them I thought to share them with my amazing liketu community.
