The Ancient City of Kaunos, Blending Seamlessly with Nature / Doğayla Bütünleşen Kaunos Antik Kent ( EN-TR)

Take a look at the stance of this structure, which seems to be defying the passage of time. With its powerful and imposing presence, it appears to be holding onto the traces of the past as if they were a badge of honor. The weeds sprouting from between the walls, meanwhile, reveal the structure’s harmony with nature. The name of this ancient city I came across during my Aegean tour is known as the Ancient City of Kaunos.

Zamana direnmeye çalışan şu yapının duruşuna bir bakın. Etrafına yaydığı güçlü ve gösterişli duruşuyla sanki geçmişin izlerini bir onur gibi hala ayakta tutabiliyor. Duvarların aralarından çıkan otlar ise, yapının doğayla olan barışıklığını gözler önüne seriyor. Ege turumda karşıma çıkan bu antik kentin adı Kaunos Antik Kent olarak biliniyor.

Köyceğiz, one of the stops on my Aegean tour, is among the most beautiful districts of Muğla Province. One of the best-known ancient cities near Köyceğiz is the Ancient City of Kaunos. Köyceğiz is known for the lake that surrounds it in an oval shape. The ancient city is located in the village of Çandır, to the west of the Dalyan River, which connects the lake to the Mediterranean coast. Our journey, which began around the quiet, serene, and still lake of Köyceğiz, took us through the water-laced paths of Dalyan until we reached the Ancient City of Kaunos. By then, we had realized that we were not merely visiting an ancient city but were also stepping into the depths of the past.

Ege turu rotalarımdan biri olan Köyceğiz, Muğla ilinin en güzel ilçeleri arasında yer alıyor. Köyceğiz'e en yakın en bilinen antik kentlerinden biri de Kaunos Antik Kenti'tir. Köyceğiz, etrafını oval şeklinde kaplayan gölü ile bilinir. Gölü Akdeniz kıyısına bağlayan ve yakınında bulunan Dalyan Çayı'nın batı yönündeki Çandır Köyünde Antik Kent yer almaktadır. Köyceğiz'in sessiz sakin ve durgun duran gölün etrafından başlayan yolculuğumuz, Dalya'nın suyla iç içe geçmiş yollarından geçerek Kaunos Antik Kenti'ne vardığımızda, sadece antik bir kent değil, geçmiş zamanın derinliklerine doğru da yürüyeceğimizin farkına varmıştık.

You enter the city via a long, narrow path carefully paved with speckled stones. They probably charge an admission fee to tour the city, but since there was no one at the ticket booth, we went straight in. By the time we arrived, the rain had intensified. But this rain and the scent of the earth added a special charm to our visit. It was as if nature had awakened within the city. The wet stones and structures looked more vibrant and brighter. The city was built on a gentle slope. Upon first entering, we came across the church known as the Palaestra Terrace. This church is a large structure made of old stones, shaped like a rectangle and featuring a total of four iron gates. There are two gates on the front of the building, and historical stone ruins have been placed in front of the gates.

Kentte benekli taşlarda özenle döşenmiş çokta geniş olmayan uzun bir yoldan giriş yapılıyor. Kenti gezmek için muhtemelen ücret alıyorlar ama gişe bölümünde kimse olmadığı için direk içeri girdik. Kente geldiğimizde yağmur da şiddetini artırmıştı. Ama bu yağmur ve toprak kokusu gezimize ayrı bir güzellik katmıştı. Sanki kenttin içinde doğa uyanmıştı. Islanan taşlar ve yapılar daha canlı ve daha parlak görünüyordu. Kent hafif yamaca doğru kurulmuştu. İlk girişte Palaestra Terası adı verilen Kilise ile karşılaştık. Bu Kilise dikdörtgen şeklinde yapılmış toplamda dört demir kapısı olan büyük eski taşlardan yapılmış bir yapı görünümdedir. Yapının ön tarafında iki kapı ve kapının önünde de tarihi kalıntı taşlar koyulmuş.

When we entered through the open iron gates of the church, which has four walls, we saw round stone structures standing on the ground to the right and left of the building. The motifs on the stone blocks resembled the cross symbols of the Christian era. The slight widening of the cross’s arms is a style frequently seen in the Byzantine period. The geometric shapes surrounding them—including triangles and squares—likely represent decorations imbued with both aesthetic and protective meanings. Symbols drawn on stone blocks like these are commonly found on church buildings and gravestones. The symbols and styles on the stones, now wet from the rain, have become more distinct and clearer.

Dört duvarı olan Kilisenin açık olan demir kapılarından içeri girdiğimizde, binanın sağ ve sol tarafında yerde duran yuvarlak taşlı yapıların olduğunu gördük. Taş blokların üzerinde yer alan motifler, hristiyanlık dönemine ait olan haç işaretlerine benziyorduu. Haçın uçlarının hafif genişlemesi Bizans dönemlerinde de sıkça görülen stiller arasındadır. Etrafındaki geometrik şekiller bunlar arasında üçgenler ve kareler de var muhtemelen hem estetik hem de koruyucu anlamlar yüklenen süslemeleri ifade ediyor. Buna benzer taş blokların üzerine çizilen semboller genelde kilise yapılarında ve mezar taşlarında çokça görülüyor. Yağmurla birlikte ıslanan taşların üzerindeki sembol ve stiller daha belirgin ve daha net ortaya çıkmış.

The church consists of two identical rooms. The hall of the other room is so seamlessly integrated with nature that grasses and flowers have sprouted from between the stones and walls, establishing their own independent presence. This room is more sheltered than the other and features an area paved with closely set stones. There are hidden passages in the room with the three arched stone openings that provide access to the other rooms. Stone blocks and historical remains can be found on the floor. Similarly, daisies and grasses struggling to emerge from the ground have also sprouted from between the walls.

Kilise iki aynı odadan oluşuyor. Diğer odanın salonu doğa ile o kadar bütünleşmiş ki, otlar çiçekler taşların ve duvarların arasından çıkarak kendi bağımsızlıklarını kurmuşlar. Bu oda diğerine göre daha korunaklı ve sık taşlarını döşendiği bir alanlan oluşuyor. Kapalı üç kemer taşın bulunduğu odadan diğer odalara geçiş imkanını sağlayan gizli bölümlerde var. Yerlerde yine taş bloklar tarihi kalıntılar bulunuyor. Aynı şekilde toprağın üstünde yeni yeni çıkmaya çalışan papatya çiçekleri ve otlar da duvarların arasından fırlamışlar.

We can see several structures surrounding the church. While the damaged buildings struggle to remain standing, the historical ruins scattered across the grass and the symbols on them bring the traces of the past to light. As you walk between the stone walls, you feel as though time has paused here to rest. The small flowers and grasses sprouting atop the walls look so beautiful in the rain that we bear witness to moments where nature and history converge.

Kilisenin etrafından birkaç yapının olduğunu görüyoruz. Hasar gören yapılar ayakta durmaya çalışırken, çimenlerin üzerinde yer alan tarihi kalıntılar ve bu kalıntıların üzerindeki semboller geçmişin izlerini gün yüzüne çıkarıyor. Taş duvarların arasında yürürken zamanın burada durup dinlendiğini hissediyorsunuz. Duvarların üstünde küçük küçük filizlenen çiçekler ve otlar yağmurla birlikte o kadar güzel görünüyor ki; doğa ile tarihin birleştiği anlara tanıklık ediyoruz.

The gray sky and the fine rain falling gently over the city seemed to bring out its essence, its character, and its radiance even more. As I wandered through the city, the historic ruins and buildings around me seemed to come to life, carrying whispers of the past into the present and telling me a different story with every step. The weariness of the clouds and their gray hues seemed to lend the city an extra atmosphere. The raindrops falling on the buildings added a melancholic air to the historical ruins.

Gökyüzünün gri oluşu ve yağmur damlalarının ince ince kentin üzerine yağması kentin içini , duruşunu ve parlaklığını sanki daha da ortaya çıkarıyordu. Kentin içinde gezerken, etraftaki tarihi kalıntılar ve yapılar sanki canlanmış ve geçmişin fısıltılarını bugüne taşıyarak her adımda bana başka bir hikaye anlatıyordu. Bulutların yorgunluğu ve gri tonları kentte ekstra bir hava katmış gibi görünüyordu. Yapıların üzerine düşen yağmur damlaları tarihi kalıntılara melankolik bir hava katmış.

One of the most impressive features of the ancient city of Kaunos—and the one I was most curious about—is the city’s theater. You enter the ancient theater through a large arched gateway built into the high wall. Once you step through the gate, you climb the stone steps to see the magnificent theater stage. At the entrance, information panels on the side walls explain the paintings, historical artifacts, and symbols from that era.

Kaunos Antik Kentin en etkileyici ve benim en çok merak ettiğim şekillerinden biri de kentin tiyatrosudur. Antik Tiyatroya yüksek duvarda oluşturulan büyük bir kemerli kapıdan giriliyor. Kapıdan içeri gidiğinizde taşlı merdivenleri çıkarak o muhteşem tiyatro sahnesini görüyorsunuz. Girişte yan duvarlarda o dönemlere ait resimleri, tarihi kalıntıları ve sembolleri açıklayan bilgi panoları yer alıyor.

The first thing that caught my eye when I saw the theater was the daisy flowers adorning the spaces between the semi-circular seating tiers. They were so beautifully arranged between the tiers that they seemed to have become one with the history of the past. This semi-circular theater layout is found in most ancient cities in Turkey. This layout generally reflects the architectural influences of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. It was likely designed to allow the audience to see the stage more comfortably. Here, the green grass and flowers sprouting from between the stones and steps, along with the olive tree rising in the center, have infused the structure with a completely different spirit. It’s as if they’ve become the indispensable spectators of the plays performed here over the centuries.

Tiyatroyu gördüğüm de ilk dikkat çeken şey yarim daire şeklinde yükselen oturma basamaklarının aralarını süsleyen papatya çiçekleri oldu. Oturma basamaklarının aralarına o kadar güzel yerleşmişler ki; sanki geçmiş tarihle bir bütün haline gelmişler. Bu yarim daire şeklindeki tiyatro düzeni Türkiye'de bulunan çoğu antik kentte yer alıyor. Bu düzen genelde Helenistik ve Roma Döneminin mimari yansımalarını işaret ediyor. Bu düzen muhtemelen seyircilerin sahneyi daha rahat görebilmesi için yapılmış. Burada taşların ve basamakların arasından çıkan yeşil otlar ve çiçeklerle ortada yükselen zeytin ağacı, yapıya bambaşka bir ruh katmış. Sanki yüzyılar boyunca sahnelenen oyunların vazgeçilmez seyircileri haline gelmişler.

The theater is situated in a truly beautiful location. It is built on a natural slope, perched at a vantage point overlooking the landscape. Entry is through arched doorways formed in certain sections of the seating steps. Although the stage has suffered damage, the beauty of nature has obscured this ruin.

Tiyatronun konumu oldukça güzel ayarlanmış. Tiyatro doğal bir yamaca yaslanmış manzaraya hakim bir noktaya kurulmuş. Oturma basamaklarının belirli bölümlerinde kemer şeklinde oluşturulan kapılardan giriş yapılıyor. Sahne her ne kadar hasar görmüş olsada doğanın güzelliği bir bu çöküntünün üzerini kapatmış.

The ancient city of Kaunos was very different from any other ancient city I’ve visited so far. The theater area, in particular, truly captivated me. Because this city wasn’t isolated. The beauty of nature—the trees, flowers, and grasses—had clung tightly to it, become one with it, and seemed to be an integral part of its spirit and its past.

Kaunos Antik Kent,şimdiki kadar gezdiğim antik kentlerden çok farklıydı. Özellikle tiyatro alanı beni gerçekten çok büyüledi. Çünkü bu kent yalnız değildi. Doğanın güzellikleri ağaçları, çiçekleri ve otları, ona sımsıkı tutunmuş, onunla bütünleşmiş ve adeta ruhunun ve geçmişin bir parçası olmuştu.
