Museu & Oficina - Valongo Romano / Riding Portugal

Now for the third and final part of the visit, which took us to the permanent space dedicated to the Serra de Santa Justa, where the museum and interpretive workshop are located. After the busier atmosphere of the main area, this space naturally invites a different pace. Here, the historical component takes precedence over the animation and helps to contextualize everything observed along the way.

Agora para a terceira e última parte da visita que nos levou ao espaço permanente dedicado à Serra de Santa Justa, onde funcionam o museu e a oficina interpretativa. Depois do ambiente mais movimentado do recinto principal, esta zona convida naturalmente a um ritmo diferente. Aqui, a componente histórica sobrepõe-se à animação e ajuda a dar contexto a tudo o que foi observado ao longo do percurso.

The exhibition begins by presenting the geology of the mountain range, explaining the formation of the land and its relationship with the mineral resources existing in the region. The information is organized in an accessible way, allowing one to understand why this territory initially attracted the interest of the Romans of that time, who ended up settling in this location for several years.

A exposição começa por apresentar a geologia da serra, explicando a formação dos terrenos e a sua relação com os recursos minerais existentes na região. A informação está organizada de forma acessível, permitindo perceber porque razão este território começou por despertar interesse aos romanos daquela altura que acabaram por se afixar neste local por vários anos.

As one progresses, attention focuses on Roman mining. Informative panels, models, and other exhibition elements describe how gold was sought and extracted, as well as some of the techniques used during that period. It does not intend to replace an archaeological visit to the site, but it provides a good basis for interpreting the landscape surrounding the event.

À medida que se avança, a atenção centra-se na exploração mineira romana. Painéis informativos, maquetas e outros elementos expositivos descrevem a forma como o ouro era procurado e extraído, bem como algumas das técnicas utilizadas nesse período. Não pretende substituir uma visita arqueológica ao terreno, mas fornece uma boa base para interpretar a paisagem que rodeia o evento.

This was probably the area where I spent the most time reading, after watching the craft demonstrations and historical reenactments. It makes sense to end here, because many of the activities take on a different meaning when you better understand the history of Roman exploration of the Serra de Santa Justa.

Foi provavelmente o espaço onde passei mais tempo a ler, depois de assistir às demonstrações de ofícios e às recriações históricas, faz sentido terminar aqui, porque muitas das atividades ganham um significado diferente quando se conhece melhor a história da exploração romana da Serra de Santa Justa.

I especially liked the fact that this section doesn't rely solely on the visual component. The information is sufficient to spark curiosity, allowing each visitor to choose how much time they want to dedicate to the visit. For those arriving with an interest in local heritage, it ends up being one of the most enriching parts of the tour.

Gostei especialmente do facto de este núcleo não depender apenas da componente visual. A informação é suficiente para despertar curiosidade, permitindo que cada visitante escolha quanto tempo pretende dedicar à visita. Para quem chega com interesse pelo património local, acaba por ser uma das partes mais enriquecedoras do percurso.

Upon leaving, we realize that this event not only seeks to recreate a historical environment, but also takes advantage of a territory where there are real traces of this presence and uses them to bring visitors closer to an important part of Valongo's history. This connection between the event and the place where it takes place is perhaps one of the aspects that most contributes to the identity of this initiative.

Ao sair, percebemos que este evento não procura apenas recriar um ambiente histórico, mas aproveita um território onde existem vestígios reais dessa presença e utiliza-os para aproximar os visitantes de uma parte importante da história de Valongo. Essa ligação entre o evento e o local onde acontece é, talvez, um dos aspetos que mais contribui para a identidade desta iniciativa.
