Escadaria Cuca Macuca - Valongo Romano / Riding Portugal

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog :-)
The visit to the Valongo Romano festival began in the lower area of the route, near the staircase known as Cuca Macuca. It's a large space, known mainly by locals as Campo da Ivanta, where it's still possible to see some ruins of ancient buildings that help frame the event's atmosphere within the past of this place, which was extensively explored by the ancient Romans and which still provides us with evidence of their presence. Even before climbing towards the main area a little higher up, it's clear that this first area was designed as a place for leisure and to recharge, especially for food.

It was there that we found the food court, simply laid out, with tables scattered throughout the space and various options for taking a break during the visit. Despite some activity, it was still relatively easy to find a free place to rest for a few minutes before continuing the route. The atmosphere was friendly and even familial, mixing families, groups of friends, and many curious people who arrived throughout the day.

The younger ones seemed to have a great meeting point there. Traditional games inspired by Roman times occupied a small part of the area, but they aroused considerable interest. These weren't electronic entertainment or modern attractions; on the contrary, they were quite simple games that invited participation and ended up attracting the attention of many adults as well, more out of curiosity than a desire to compete.

The location near the hillside greatly facilitates this first contact with the event, with the vegetation of the Serra da Santa Justa surrounding the entire area and creating a natural separation from the city further down in the valley. I didn't have that feeling of entering a typical traditional fair like many others I've had the opportunity to visit. The atmosphere is different, calmer, perhaps because it's a very recent event, and the very presence of the ruins reminds us that this space has an ancient connection to that territory.

Before starting the climb up the Cuca Macuca staircase, it's worth stopping for a few minutes to observe the activity, where there's always someone trying out one of the games, children running between activities, and visitors planning the rest of the route using the event map available in a small stall near the start of the staircase. It's a tranquil introduction to Roman Valongo and nicely prepares the transition to the more dynamic part of the visit.

From here, the path naturally climbs the mountain, and I'm glad we have those stairs, which allow for more accessible access. The staircase leaves the reception area behind and leads to the space where the historical reenactment takes on another dimension, but I'll leave that part for the next article :)

I hope you enjoyed.
See you around.
Wishing you much peace and health

STOPI love fairs and this one has a really interesting theme. Greetings!
You've captured the atmosphere of the festival so well by describing your experience step-by-step. You've managed to make us feel the tranquility and historical atmosphere not just through your photos, but also through the visuals. I was particularly drawn to the traditional games inspired by the Roman era, especially those prepared for children. Festivals are usually crowded, but here there's a calm, peaceful, and historically rich beauty.
