Risky Loan: I gave him part of my tuition fee.

Greetings, everyone.

Welcome to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. Risk is something we take every day; some are beneficial to us while others leave us at a loss. Giving out loans to a person is one of the biggest risks one can take; not everyone takes loans with the intention of paying them back. Some just want to do away with your hard-earned money but don't know how to go about it, so they use the term loan me some money to get it.

On several occasions I was a victim of loaning money out to people and getting nothing in return; instead, they ghosted me for some time and still came back to ask for another, reminding me of the previous and saying they had not forgotten about it. You have not forgotten, so what's stopping you from paying up?

The last loan I gave out still did not go well; it was early this year, around January 18th or so. I traveled to the village for the Christmas celebration; it was fun, and I really enjoyed getting to meet my extended family. All these years, we have only talked over the phone and have never seen each other in person, so the Christmas celebration brought us together, and it was one big family.

After the whole celebration, people started traveling back to their various places of work and where they are based. One of my cousins says he works with a biscuit-producing company, and they have not been paid any salary since December, so he is automatically stranded in the village as he has no transport fare to go back to his work place.

Since I had no extra money in my account and just my tuition fee, I paid deaf ears to his story, as I did not want to take the risk of loaning him money from my tuition fee, as my past experiences with loaning people money were awful. I was worried in my heart, but taking the risk was a no-no for me as things have not been really going well with me. What if he does not pay back? How do I cover my tuition fee? That was the question going through my mind.

I traveled back to school, leaving him in the village, but was still thinking about what could be done about him. On the 18th of January, he chatted me up on WhatsApp, pleading with me to loan him money from my tuition fee, and once he gets back to base, he will send the money back to me. I was confused about what to do, but I just cannot turn him down as everyone has already left the village, leaving him all alone.

I sent him 20,000 naira ($43.6); that was the amount he needed to get back to base. He promised to return it even before the end of January because they promised to pay all outstanding salaries once they resumed work. When he arrived in Lagos, he called and told me he was home safe and sound. He thanked me for helping out, but all I was after was that he return the money as promised.

January ended, and he started ghosting me. He no longer replies to my chats and doesn't pick up my calls, but if I call him with another number, he'll pick it up, and once he hears my voice, he hangs up on me. And that's how I had to struggled to pay my tuition fee, not because I was not given by my parents but because I took the risk and loaned it out. To date, he hasn't replied to my chats, but he's always online.

Thanks for reading my post.

So bad of him. Actions like this dents one's integrity. It may come back to haunt him where he least expected.

I am glad you stopped by, sometimes I feel scared to loan anyone money because of results like this.

Because of these people, we then see others with the same view that they too will not pay their debts on time.

Exactly, we start feeling like everyone will do away with the money when given.

If man does not do so, we can easily lend to anyone and trust him

I hate it when people do something like that, you helped him out of a difficult situation and he paid you back by ghosting you. The least he could have done is to explain himself or try as much as possible to pay you back, knowing fully well that it's your school fees

It pained my heart because he made me tamper with my plans. Money for something else was used to cover my school fee.

Ah, how can people be so bad, I really don't get this, well thank God you finally paid, but it would have caused you a lot

I had same similar experience of borrowing someone out of my tuition fee, I ended up blaming my self.

People have the habit of making all sort of promise whenever they need money but fail to fulfil it.

I'm glad you were able to sort out your tuition fee, you could have been in big trouble.

I am not taking that kind of risk ever again, borrowing someone money from tuition fee is risky.
