My father's vegetable garden and its contribution to the care of natural resources [ENG-ESP]

When talking about natural resources, about their care and impact on society, people usually think of large forests, ancient trees and wildlife. Many go for romantic positions such as save the whales, even if your country does not have an abundance of these species. There are also those who take an active part almost to the extreme in campaigns on social networks, but how many do something to care for natural resources, what counts is the action, no matter how small it may be.

Al hablar sobre los recursos naturales, sobre su cuidado e impacto en la sociedad, normalmente las personas piensan en los grandes bosques, en árboles centenarios y en la fauna silvestre. Muchos se van a posiciones cargadas de romanticismo como salvemos a las ballenas, aun cuando en tu país no abunden esas especies. También están los que forman parte activa casi en extremo en las campañas en las redes sociales, pero cuantos hacen algo para cuidar a los recursos naturales lo que cuenta es la acción por muy pequeña que esta sea.

Between cleaning the plants, preparing the soil for the next planting and the joy of the harvest, this is how he spends his mornings. When she was a teacher, she always planted trees, and she has taught all her children and grandchildren the importance of taking care of nature's resources, especially plants.

En el caso de mi padre ha sido un apasionado de la naturaleza toda su vida, aun en estos días con sus 82 años de vida se levanta muy temprano a atender su huerto. Entre la limpieza de las plantas, el preparar la tierra para una próxima siembra y la alegría de la cosecha, así pasa su parte de sus mañanas. Cuando ejercía la docencia siempre realizo jornadas de siembra de árboles, y a todos sus hijos y nietos le ha enseñado la importancia de cuidar a los recursos naturaleza, en especial a las plantas.

In the garden today we can highlight the presence of cilantro, a vegetable that gives a unique flavor to food, a seasoning as we know it from the Orient. Also in my dad's garden there are tomato plants, several types of cambures, topochos which are short cycle vegetables that maintain a permanent planting rotation. But there are also trees whose contribution to the environment is more durable, such as avocado, oranges, loquats, sugar cane, cherries and tápara trees. These crops, in addition to serving as a source of food in many cases, have served as a didactic way for young people and adults to learn how certain vegetables that we buy in the market grow. I remember once that some children who visited us mistook a tápara bush for a patilla bush.

En el huerto hoy se destacan la presencia del cilantro, un vegetal que da un sabor único a las comidas, un aliño como lo conocemos los orientales. También en el huerto de mi papá hay matas de tomates, varios tipos de cambures, topochos que son vegetales de ciclo corto que mantienen una permanente rotación de siembra. Pero cuenta con la presencia de árboles cuyo aporte al medio ambiente son más duraderos como el aguacate, naranjas, nísperos, caña de azúcar, cerezas y árbol de tápara. Estos cultivos, además de servir como fuente de alimento en muchos casos, han servido de manera didáctica para que jóvenes y adultos conozcan cómo crecen ciertos vegetales que compramos en el mercado. Recuerdo una vez que unos niños que nos visitaban confundían una mata de tápara con una mata de patilla.

There is a good flower department with the presence of more than 30 orchid bushes of different varieties that during the month of May turn the patio into a festival of colors with their beautiful flowers. Taking care of orchids is a delicate activity and a tremendous constancy. Making sure that they always have the required humidity, that they do not receive direct sunlight, as well as making sure that ants do not attack them, are part of the daily routine that my father carries out in his orchard.

Hay un buen departamento de flores con la presencia de más de 30 matas de orquídeas de distintas variedades que durante el mes de mayo convierten al patio en un festival de colores con sus hermosas flores. El cuidar de las orquídeas es una actividad delicada y de una constancia tremenda. El estar pendiente que siempre tengan la humedad requerida, que no reciban directamente los rayos de la luz solar, así como estar pendientes que las hormigas no las ataquen, son parte de la rutina diaria que realiza mi padre en su huerto.

I have always said that the change that we all wish for our country will happen when each one of us, from our own square meter of living space, begins to show that change, in terms of caring for natural resources. The most important thing has been to have transmitted to us that love for plants and domestic animals, for nature. Today in my own home I also have my own gardens and I plant plants that give a great greenness and a feeling of freshness to my home.

Siempre he dicho que el cambio que deseamos todos para nuestro país se dará cuando cada uno desde su metro cuadrado de espacio vital comience a mostrar ese cambio, en materia de cuidado de los recursos naturales, mi padre desde hace muchos años ha hecho grandes aportes. Lo más importante ha sido habernos trasmitido ese amor por las plantas y los animales domésticos, por la naturaleza. Hoy en mi propio hogar también tengo mis jardines y siembro plantas que dan un gran verdor y una sensación de frescura a mi hogar.
