Postcards from Thailand #7: My Acti-Set-The-Neighbours-Field-On-Fire Report Card: 31 March 2023

(Edited)

It's been very dry and hot here recently, as that's how it rolls in March and April. No rain and temperatures in the upper 30s means that everything is tinder dry...

Tinder dry is the operative word as under these extreme meteorological conditions, the mother in law decided it was time to burn some garden rubbish.

We get a lot of garden rubbish and her weekly fires appear to be some sort of therapy as she stands watching the dancing flames with the look of a manical Thai arsonist etched across her face.

She hadn't had a bonfire last week so I'd thought she'd given them up until the first rains again appear in May. I'd been saving packing boxes and clippings around the back for her ready for a 'big one', but I guess she couldn't resist and needed a fix and as the wife and I said goodbye to the last case of the day, our noses began to pick-up the first hint of smoke.

To be fair to her, she'd turned on all the sprinklers around the location of her fire and was busy taking more leaves and branches into the flames and all seemed calm and in control but then, the crackling noises turned up to 11 and I looked across the hedge to see flames leaping up from the middle of the next field, the field of the auld enemy!

I've mentioned before about the generations old feud with the neighbours over boundary markers and my builders using their field as a car park etc and there's no love lost, but I had a feeling that turning their land into more 'scorched earth' than a gulf war might be taking things a step too far.

The owner was soon over with his pet Pitbull on a leash and although voices were low as he 'chatted to the MiL, they were obviously not happy. Not to be outdone, FiL soon arrived on the scene with a machete and his famous 'heavy shoulder bag'. It was a polite discussion with everyone still using 'na khrap' after every sentence albeit with slightly more menacing overtones and as the discussions went on, the fire started to spread, I just grabbed my spade, walked past the drama queens and simply scraped a ring around the burning grass and scrub. I then walked back for my long hosepipe and stood and doused it all down until just a steaming pile of burned earth remained. Not a big deal.

It could have been worse in many ways and as I was stood enjoying a cold Chang, discussions were still ongoing, although this time, I could hear a.more jovial tone and the words 'baa falang' (crazy white guy) being dropped into almost every sentence.

Make bonfires, not war, folks!

Perhaps this is the beginning of a beautiful and peaceful new chapter in the lives of two local families....but I doubt it!

This is how they normally look!

Oh dear, neighbour fueds are really tricky and horrible.

How did MiL react to baa falang putting out her bonfire in front of the neighbour? Surely that's lost of face for her?

I didn't put her bonfire out, I just put out the fire in the neighbours land that a spark from our fire had started lol...they're a set of drama queens tbh. This has been going on for years and years. I am seriously so glad I don't speak Thai so I can't get dragged into stuff. Ignorance, truly is bliss ;-)

You have a great weekend :-)

Ah yah!! Missed that bit 🤣. They all must love having you around. Look on the bright side, if baa falang can defuse the relations, you're certainly making yourself useful!

The good thing is having a neighbor you can actually resolve issues with. I have neighbors who are stubborn as mules and it doesn't end well when I get angry with them hahaha.

Such a peaceful bonfire

It's temporary mate! They'll be back to fighting like hell next week!

Bonfires are good for the soul my friend.

Hope this year is slowly improving mate. Small steps :-)

Your mother-in-law sounds like a handful.

Love her already. Confirmed now. 👍

Lol that's the funny thing, she's normally so quiet and demure until either she spots a lighter and a pile of leaves, or she's battering to death some creepy crawly.
I fear for my life sometimes!

How's the no smoking going or shouldn't I ask?

😆

Aren't we all?!

No killing creepy crawlies. Tell her! Bad karma, dude.

It's going pretty good actually. Thanks 😊 👍

Last month was a bitch though. Horrible horrible. I didn't expect the come down at all... starting to feel a bit more sparkly again now. But the mood thing was not so fun.
