The Holdovers - Movie Review [ES - EN]

No quiero ser repetitivo, pero es inevitable no relacionar el tema familiar con un film navideño, es la base, es el motivo principal, es lo que inicia y finaliza cada historia, es una parte importante, pero no toda, ya que una producción siempre dependerá de lo que va en el medio, de como se relata la historia, como se comportan los personajes, de como influye el tema familiar en esta época del año en cada uno de ellos; estás son características que espero ver en películas en esta época de navidad, relatos positivos, divertidos y porque no, hasta con temas reales; justamente esos factores son los que aparecen en el film al que hago reseña en esta publicación.

I do not want to be repetitive, but it is inevitable not to relate the family theme with a Christmas film, it is the basis, it is the main motive, it is what begins and ends each story, it is an important part, but not all, since a production will always depend on what goes in the middle, how the story is told, how the characters behave, how the family theme influences each one of them at this time of the year; these are characteristics that I hope to see in films this Christmas season, positive, funny stories and why not, even with real issues; precisely these factors are the ones that appear in the film that I am reviewing in this publication.

"The Holdovers", película que usa la comedia y el drama para el relato de una historia sobre cómo un profesor, una jefa de cocina y un estudiante que deberán pasar las vacaciones navideñas dentro de la Academia Barton, internado de New England; ellos deberán con su temperamento, tristezas y motivos de vida, lidiar y crear una inesperada amistad lo cual los pueda hacer enfrentar lo que les espera en un futuro.

"The Holdovers", a film that uses comedy and drama to tell a story about how a teacher, a head cook and a student who must spend the Christmas vacations at Barton Academy, a boarding school in New England; they must deal with their temperament, sadness and motives in life, and create an unexpected friendship that can make them face what awaits them in the future.

Este es un film del cual no esperaba nada y después de verlo siento que encontré un tesoro, es una completa genialidad toda esta producción, la cual desde el primer momento se comienza a disfrutar; está es una película ambientada en el comienzo de los 70' y el director, Alexander Payne, creo que tuvo como asignación hacer que se notará en cada imagen; primeramente nos da esa noción que el último día de clases ha llegado, nevada intensa, bajas temperaturas, adolescentes y niños felices por las vacaciones y todo eso se nota en los minutos iniciales del film, algo muy importante para lo que será el relato en todo está producción, a eso debo anexar, el estilo muy divertido en diferentes escenas, me hizo recordar a ciertas películas hechas en esa época, con mucha importancia en la música, en la edición y por supuesto en los diferentes planos en cada toma; no hay duda que este es un gran trabajo por parte de Payne.

La historia es lo mejor del film, el realto de tres personajes que deben pasar las navidades juntos y que a pesar de sus claras diferencias, no temen a nosotras sus similitudes y así pueden crear un fuerte lazo entre ellos; esto puede simplificar está historia, pero lo hecho por David Hemingson, en el guion es excelente, me pareció muy bien que se use a personas que añoran estar con sus familias en esa época del año y por cualquier circunstancia, deban estar con extraños, pero justamente es eso lo que quiebra una zona de confort, hace caer capas que cubren verdades sentimientos y de esa manera podrá aprender a lidiar y porque no vivir mejor, crecer un poco más.

This is a film of which I did not expect anything and after watching it I feel I found a treasure, it is a complete genius all this production, which from the first moment you start to enjoy; this is a film set in the early 70's and the director, Alexander Payne, I think he had the assignment to make it noticeable in every image; firstly gives us that notion that the last day of school has arrived, intense snowfall, low temperatures, teenagers and children happy for the vacations and all that is noticeable in the initial minutes of the film, something very important for what will be the story throughout this production, to that I must add, the very funny style in different scenes, reminded me of certain films made at that time, with great importance in the music, editing and of course in the different shots in each shot; there is no doubt that this is a great job by Payne.

The story is the best of the film, the story of three characters who must spend Christmas together and that despite their clear differences, they are not afraid of us their similarities and so they can create a strong bond between them; This may simplify this story, but what David Hemingson has done in the script is excellent, I thought it was very good to use people who yearn to be with their families at that time of the year and for whatever reason, must be with strangers, but that is exactly what breaks a comfort zone, makes layers fall that cover true feelings and thus can learn to cope and why not live better, grow a little more.

Las actuaciones también son muy buenas, desde los simples o sencillos personajes, hasta sus tres protagonistas como son: Paul Giamatti, como "Paul Hunham", un profesor exigente, poco o nada amigable con sus estudiantes y compañeros de profesión, con un defecto ocular y otros más, pero que entiende sobre qué persona puede tomar su tipo de enseñanza y usarlo en sus vidas; no es un hombre perfecto y creo que no busca en serlo y tal vez eso lo convierte en alguien con pocas metas, poco ambicioso que es feliz en su solitaria zona de confort; otro gran personaje es "Angus Tully" Interpretado por Dominic Sessa; este joven estudiante es el claro ejemplo de alguien que busca atención, en especial la de su madre; es alguien solitario, problemático, pero es inteligente, con mucho potencial, pero que no es bien usado por problemas los cuales él esconde muy adentro y que al exponerlos, es donde podrá encontrar un momento de curar las heridas; algo muy parecido le sucede al personaje de "Mary Lamb", Interpretado por Da'Vine Joy Randolph, me gustó mucho este personaje, es fuerte, pero a la vez es el más triste, es quien ha perdido más y de una manera u otra necesita un motivo más de vida, su participación es breve, pero es muy bien escrita, es divertida y en momentos, es conmovedora, pero creo que puedo definirla como una mujer valiente. Estás tres actuaciones, estos tres actores hacen un trabajo especial, estoy seguro de que sin ellos en esos roles, la película no tendría el impacto que tiene.

The performances are also very good, from the simple or simple characters, to its three main characters such as: Paul Giamatti, as "Paul Hunham", a demanding teacher, little or not friendly with his students and fellow teachers, with an ocular defect and others, but who understands about which person can take his kind of teaching and use it in their lives; he is not a perfect man and I think he is not looking to be one and maybe that makes him someone with few goals, not very ambitious who is happy in his lonely comfort zone; another great character is "Angus Tully" Played by Dominic Sessa; this young student is the clear example of someone who seeks attention, especially from his mother; he is lonely, troubled, but he is intelligent, with a lot of potential, but he is not well used because of problems which he hides deep inside and that when he exposes them, is where he can find a moment to heal the wounds; Something very similar happens to the character of "Mary Lamb", played by Da'Vine Joy Randolph, I really liked this character, she is strong, but at the same time she is the saddest, she is the one who has lost the most and in one way or another needs a reason to live, her participation is brief, but it is very well written, she is funny and at times, she is touching, but I think I can define her as a brave woman. These three performances, these three actors do a special job, I am sure that without them in these roles, the film would not have the impact it has.

No tengo ninguna duda en decir que The Holdovers es la mejor película navideña que he visto en años, también opino que es de las mejores películas del 2023, es una grata sorpresa, es una historia que hace fluir la historia de tres personajes, posiblemente con dos fuertes protagonistas y una co-estelar, pero que al final confluyen en un solo camino y es del de confirmar una inesperada, pero sorprendente familia y quiero que con esto no se pretenda que haga spoiler del film porque lo importante es el relato de como se llega a ese momento en específico, son las imágenes que nos entregan, el desarrollo de cada personaje, la música que acompaña la historia, es una unión de elementos que hace que sea tan fluido y grato este film y es por eso que la hace ser tan buena como es; espero que tengan la oportunidad de ver este film, es de lo mejor y créanme que no se arrepentirán de ver esta gran historia de tres personas que son saberlo, se unirán para tener una feliz navidad.

I have no doubt in saying that The Holdovers is the best Christmas movie I've seen in years, I also think it is one of the best films of 2023, it is a pleasant surprise, it is a story that makes the story of three characters flow, possibly with two strong protagonists and a co-star, but in the end they converge in a single path and it is to confirm an unexpected, I don't want this to be a spoiler of the film because the important thing is the story of how they get to that specific moment, the images that are given to us, the development of each character, the music that accompanies the story, it is a union of elements that makes this film so fluid and pleasant and that is why it is as good as it is; I hope you have the opportunity to see this film, it is one of the best and believe me you will not regret watching this great story of three people who know each other, they will come together to have a merry Christmas.
