Gen V (Season 2) - Series Review [ES - EN]

Sé que voy bastante atrasado al realizar una reseña sobre la segunda temporada de "Gen V", pero no me sentía con la motivación suficiente para ver nuevos episodios de esta historia de jóvenes "Supes", pero con el estreno de la última temporada de "The Boys", pensé que era necesario ver los ocho episodios que la conforman porque posiblemente esta parte de la historia tendría cierta influencia en el final de la serie, la cual les dio origen.

I know I’m pretty late to the party with this review of the second season of “Gen V,” but I just couldn’t bring myself to watch new episodes of this story about young “Supes,” but with the premiere of the final season of "The Boys," I thought it was necessary to watch all eight episodes because this part of the story might have some influence on the series finale, which is where it all began.

La primera temporada de "Gen V" me pareció bastante entretenida y me agradó porque fue un buen complemento para la serie original; su estreno funcionó muy bien porque contó con un punto alto de la popularidad de The Boys y los fans siguieron enganchados, pero lamentablemente lo sucedido por la huelga de guionistas y la lamentable noticia del fallecimiento de uno de sus protagonistas pausaron por gran tiempo el desarrollo de su segunda temporada, la cual, al momento de ser estrenada, creo que no obtuvo el impacto necesario a pesar de la crítica positiva que obtuvo.

I found the first season of "Gen V" quite entertaining, and I liked it because it was a great complement to the original series; its premiere went very well because it rode the wave of The Boys’ peak popularity and kept fans hooked, but unfortunately, the writers’ strike and the tragic news of the death of one of its lead actors put the development of its second season on hold for a long time. When it finally premiered, I don’t think it had the necessary impact, despite the positive reviews it received.

En esta segunda parte se nota que el desarrollo de la historia se vio afectado por el fallecimiento de Chance Perdomo lo cual hizo que los guionistas decidieran que su personaje "Andre Anderson" también falleciera en la serie, lo cual funcionó en muchos ámbitos de la historia como motivo de los demás personajes para hacer frente a una inesperada y fuerte amenaza; esto me pareció que fue algo acertado por todos en la serie porque fue un necesario y merecido homenaje hacia el actor y proveyó un necesario grado de drama en la historia que de igual manera también tuvo tiempo para explorar temas como romance, decepción, acción y, por supuesto, la comedia típica en esta serie.

In this second part, it’s clear that the story’s development was affected by the passing of Chance Perdomo, which led the writers to decide that his character, “Andre Anderson,” would also die in the series. This worked well in many aspects of the story, serving as a catalyst for the other characters to confront an unexpected and formidable threat; I felt this was the right decision for everyone involved in the series because it served as a necessary and well-deserved tribute to the actor and provided a much-needed dose of drama to the story, which also still had time to explore themes such as romance, disappointment, action, and, of course, the comedy typical of this series.

Con respecto al antagonista a enfrentar, la decisión de contar con Hamish Linklater como "Dean Cipher" fue lo mejor de la temporada; creo que este actor tiene el rango para usar el sarcasmo como un arma para generar miedo, tensión y, por supuesto, odio. El personaje de Cipher rebosa una actitud de superioridad sobre los demás y la inclusión de este personaje para tomar las riendas de la universidad de Supes fue necesaria porque en esta temporada era obligatorio tener un mejor villano a enfrentar. Sobre la influencia actoral de los ya conocidos protagonistas, el trabajo fue más que adecuado; creo que en esta ocasión existió la necesidad de cerrar arcos argumentales de cada uno de estos personajes y, sorpresivamente, funcionó para la mayoría de ellos, aunque creo que en la temporada anterior, el desarrollo de sus traumas y el uso de sus poderes fue algo que me pareció genial y que en esta oportunidad queda relegado para relatar algo más genérico y rápido de digerir. Esto es lo que creo que es la gran diferencia entre temporadas y, posiblemente, mi crítica negativa.

As for the antagonist we’re up against, the decision to cast Hamish Linklater as “Dean Cipher” was the best move of the season; I think this actor has the range to use sarcasm as a weapon to instill fear, tension, and, of course, hatred. Cipher’s character exudes an air of superiority over others, and bringing him in to take the reins of Supes University was necessary because this season absolutely required a better villain to face off against. As for the acting performances of the familiar main characters, the work was more than adequate; I think this time there was a need to wrap up the story arcs for each of these characters, and surprisingly, it worked for most of them, though I feel that in the previous season, the development of their traumas and the use of their powers was something I thought was great, and this time it’s been sidelined to tell a more generic and easily digestible story. This is what I believe is the major difference between the seasons and, possibly, the basis for my negative critique.

En sí, creo que la segunda temporada de "Gen V" no fue tan buena como la anterior, aunque si algo entretenida; creo que contar con ocho episodios fue algo excesivo porque posiblemente con menos se pudo relatar de igual manera la historia en esta segunda temporada y mientras veía el final de temporada no dejaba de pensar que su realización fue más que una obligación que una necesidad y eso lo digo porque en mi opinión y sin hacer visto ninguno de los episodios estrenados de la temporada final de The Boys, creo que estos personajes tendrán una poca influencia en esa serie y lo que han enseñado en lo que considero fue su temporada final, posiblemente sea usado como un punto de partida para algún otro spin-off a estrenar y es que por si no lo saben, están en desarrollo otras dos series que son parte de este universo de héroes corrompidos, una de esas producciones es una precuela enfocado en el comportamiento de la compañía Vought y el origen de sus creaciones y otra es una serie a desarrollarse en México; ambas historias usarán a la compañía como la gran enemiga de la humanidad y en dónde tanto humanos como Supes deberán enfrentar. Personalmente, creo que fue una equivocación ver esta serie antes de comenzar con el final de The Boys la cual ya tenía bajas expectativas y ahora, créanme, que son mucho más bajas.

Personally, I don't think the second season of "Gen V" was as good as the first, though it was somewhat entertaining; I think having eight episodes was a bit excessive because the story could likely have been told just as well with fewer episodes in this second season, and while I was watching the season finale, I couldn’t help but think that making it was more of an obligation than a necessity. I say this because, in my opinion—and without having seen any of the episodes released from the final season of The Boys— I believe these characters will have little influence on that series, and what they’ve shown in what I consider to be its final season will likely be used as a starting point for some other upcoming spin-off. And just in case you didn’t know, two other series are in development that are part of this universe of corrupt heroes: one of these productions is a prequel focused on the behavior of the Vought Corporation and the origin of its creations, and the other is a series set in Mexico; both stories will feature the corporation as humanity’s greatest enemy, which both humans and Supes will have to face. Personally, I think it was a mistake to watch this series before starting the finale of The Boys, which I already had low expectations for—and now, believe me, they’re even lower.
