[Movie] 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple - Review [ES - EN]

With the arrival of October, my blog officially kicks off Hivelloween on my blog—a theme I’ve adopted to review movies, miniseries, and TV series in genres like horror, suspense, and thrillers that were released both this year and in previous years. To kick off “Hivelloween 2026,” I decided to review the film that came out earlier this year: 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, the sequel to “28 Years Later,” making it the fourth film in the franchise that began 23 years ago with the release of “28 Days Later.” This is the second film in the franchise not directed by Danny Boyle, who has handed the reins to Nia DaCosta to bring the screenplay written by Alex Garland to life through movement, sound, and visuals.

In this sequel, we follow the story of four of the characters who first appeared in this franchise in the previous film, although this time the spotlight falls on “Dr. Ian Kelson,” as the story is told from his point of view. That’s why the coming-of-age narrative we saw in “Spike’s” story is left behind, and this time we encounter what I consider to be either a tribute to or a demonstration of the influence of “Frankenstein”—specifically, the story of a doctor attempting to bring a monster back to life. This approach—using a dystopian United Kingdom, with the lingering aftermath of the epidemic’s devastation and the endless quarantine to which people were subjected—to explore the curiosity of certain characters and, in turn, their descent into madness in search of a semblance of normalcy and even power, is the best part of this film. And that’s why I really liked the story by ** Garland**’s story, where the horror stems more from “healthy” humans than from the infected.

Da Costa’s work might be considered less artistic than that of Boyle, but the reality is that his vision continues to evolve, offering scenes that are both excellent and unsettling—scenes that make no attempt to romanticize certain characters; it is precisely that rawness that I consider more than appropriate because it demonstrates an appreciation for the madness of each character who drives this film, which allows it to fit into an apocalyptic world; I particularly appreciate that in these two films, the countryside and the forest are used as the setting for the imagery—or, rather, the action and horror scenes—as they are perfect for generating suspense, impact, and despair.

Since this is a story told through the perspective of the character “Dr. Kelson,” it was to be expected that Ralph Fiennes would once again truly shine in his performance; I have no doubt that his acting drives the film, where his madness not only propels this story but, I believe, lays the groundwork for what could be a third film in this new (supposed) trilogy. Fiennes promotes understanding and reconciliation with a world that doesn’t exist; he embodies sanity within his madness, which I consider perfect for what his character represents—something that is the exact opposite of the character “Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal,” played by ** Jack O’Connell**—a character whose madness brings only ruin, lies, and, of course, manipulation—something that has always existed in society and always attracts followers; his performance was good, though in my opinion it’s overshadowed not only by Fiennes but also by Erin Kellyman, who plays one of the “Jimmys.”

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple may not be considered as good as its predecessor; the very small number of infected characters surely disappointed its loyal fans, but I think it still offers certain relevant insights into the lore of the infected, which I believe will be an important element for a possible third film in the franchise—or, preferably, in this phase. I like that this movie showcases extremes in the characters’ portrayal of innocence, reflected mainly in the characters of Spike and Samson, but there’s no doubt that what I liked most was precisely the depiction of various forms of madness that can heighten both intelligence and the total loss of sanity; it’s possibly the “infected” who are the most to be feared in this movie. The Bone Temple is entertaining, just like the previous film, though I don’t consider it a great zombie movie—or, in this case, a movie about the “infected”—but it does continue to explore the consequences and actions of those who survived the collapse of a society, which is what I truly appreciate about this franchise.

Well, I'm not sure if I am going to watch, to be frank, I don't even remember the first movie and trailer it was confusing! I like a good horror, though!
To understand this, you need to watch the previous movie.
What you're saying is absolutely valid, and I think that's the big problem with that particular movie—because many people were expecting the typical zombie movie with a sequel, but the story turned out to be different, and this one is even more so.
These are stories that take place in a world that was destroyed by a pandemic of zombies or infected people—and that's it. These creatures are relevant because they're the root cause, but now they're just a side component.

You made a very interesting review, though this is the first time I'm hearing about this movie and it sounds like there are some parts that looks scary, though I like watching scary movie but only in a daytime.😉
This is a great franchise, and I'll tell you this: if you want to watch this movie, you absolutely have to watch the first one, called "28 Days Later," before watching "28 Years Later" and then "The Bone Temple."
Personally, I think they're all great, and that strategy of watching horror movies during the day is really good 👍
Wow that's interesting, I think I will give it a try, and I will start to watch the 28 Days later before watching 28 years later so I can get to understand the movie much better, just as you said. Thank you so much @nameless16 🙏🙂
