Film Review: Rental Family | Services that help you appreciate life more. 🎥🎭 [ENG/ESP]

Hello, film buffs! I hope you’re having a good start to the week. I’d seen several posts about the film Rental Family, including one from my friend @erigm, who always shares great reviews and insights with us. Her post piqued my curiosity about the film, not least because it stars Brendan Fraser, who plays the lead role. Another thing that caught my attention was that it was filmed in Tokyo and the whole story is set in that city, which makes this kind of story seem more original to me. I really liked this film, so I’d love for you to read my review of Rental Family, where nothing is what it seems.

Había visto varias publicaciones de la película Rental Family, entre ellas la de mi amiga @erigm quien siempre nos comparte grandes reseñas y reflexiones. Su post me causó curiosidad por la película y también porque sale Brendan Fraser quien es el protagonista de la historia. Otra cosa que me llamó la atención fue que la filmaron en Tokio y todo el contexto de la historia se da en esa ciudad, lo que hace que me parezca más original este tipo de historias. Me gusto mucho esta película así que me gustaría que leyeran mi reseña de la película Rental Family donde nada es lo que parece.

The story follows Philip (Brendan Fraser), a man who is in debt and desperately needs to find a new job. That’s when he comes across a company called Rental Family, which promises him he can continue doing what he loves—acting—but this job is different and rather unusual. Fraser must follow certain rules when hired as an actor to fulfil various requests from people seeking the service, and in return they can pay him for his performance. At first, he is very professional, even though he knows what he is doing isn’t entirely right, but he carries on because he needs the job and the money. Until he forms too close a bond with the people he meets, and from there everything begins to change.

La historia sigue a Philip un hombre (Brendan Fraser) quien está endeudado y necesita con urgencia encontrar un nuevo trabajo. Es allí cuando conoce una empresa llamada Rental Family que le promete poder seguir haciendo lo que le gusta —que es la actuación—, pero este trabajo es diferente y muy particular. Fraser debe seguir ciertas reglas al ser contratado como actor para cumplir con diferentes favores que necesitan las personas que buscan el servicio y a cambio pueden pagarle por su actuación. Al comienzo el es muy profesional aunque sabe que no está del todo bien lo que hace, pero continúa porque necesita el trabajo y el dinero. Hasta que conecta de más con las personas que conoce y desde allí todo empieza a cambiar.

Following his success in the film The Whale, Brendan Fraser takes on a story that blends two distinct genres: drama and comedy. This time, he must do what he does best: act. So, amidst his financial difficulties, he decides to accept the role, even though he knows it’s a delicate matter and that he must be very cautious. Fraser gives off an aura of being a very kind and empathetic person, and he conveys this very same quality in the film; he is concerned that the job isn’t just a job, and he looks for ways to do it well without hurting anyone in the process.

Después de su éxito en la película The Whale (La Ballena) Brendan Fraser apuesta por una historia donde se mezclan dos géneros distintos: el drama y la comedia. En esta ocasión debe hacer lo que mejor sabe hacer: actuar, por lo que en medio de sus problemas financieros decide aceptar el trabajo aunque sabe que es algo delicado y que debe ser muy prudente. Fraser me da un aura de ser una persona muy amable y empática y esto mismo lo transmite en la película, el se preocupa porque el trabajo no sea solo trabajo, busca la manera de hacerlo bien sin lastimar a nadie durante el proceso.

And that’s where things get more complicated, because he begins to empathise with an elderly man who is depressed and showing early signs of dementia; his daughter has hired him to help lift the man’s spirits and make him feel that his work has been worthwhile. During this time, Fraser becomes a writer who supposedly comes to gather the story of the old man’s life because he greatly admires him and wants to publish it in a major newspaper. At first, the old man refuses, but he later feels more at ease with him, to the point where he always wants to do things that his own daughter won’t allow him to do because she is struggling with the onset of dementia.

Y es allí donde se complican más las cosas porque empieza a empatizar con un adulto mayor que está deprimido y que tiene principios de demencia, su hija contrata los servicios para que este se sienta menos deprimido y pueda sentir que su trabajo ha valido la pena. Durante este tiempo Fraser se convierte en un escritor, que supuestamente va a buscar la historia de la vida del señor porque le tiene gran admiración y porque lo quiere publicar en un periódico importante. Al comienzo el Señor se niega pero luego se siente más en confianza con el, a tal punto que siempre quiere hacer cosas que su propia hija no le permite porque tiene problemas con el inicio de la demencia.

The other role is a bit more delicate: Fraser has to play a father so that a young girl can start at a new school; her mother hires him for the job and introduces them. Although at first the girl wants nothing to do with him, over time they end up connecting more deeply than anyone expected. It’s perhaps one of the roles I liked best that he played, and it moved me to see how he tried to portray, as best he could, an absent father returning from another country to meet his daughter and build a relationship with her. The scenes between the two of them are very touching, and you get the sense that, more than just a job, Fraser is beginning to connect emotionally with his ‘clients’.

El otro trabajo es un poco más delicado, Fraser debe ser un padre para que una niña pueda entrar en una nueva escuela, la madre de ella contrata los servicios y los presenta. Aunque al comienzo la niña no quiere tener ningún tipo de relación con el, terminan con el tiempo conectando más profundamente de lo que se esperaba. Tal vez es de los trabajos que más me gustó que hiciera y que me hizo sentir emocionada al ver como intentaba intérpretar de la mejor manera a un padre ausente que vuelve de otro país para conocer a su hija y tener una relación con ella. Las escenas de ambos son muy bonitas y se siente que más que un trabajo, Fraser empieza a conectar emocionalmente con sus "clientes".

The company, called Rental Family, presents itself as a normal business but provides this kind of service, and it employs two other Japanese staff members who serve the same purpose as Fraser. However, it is rather strange and sad that someone should have to hire such a service, and that the person providing it has to pretend to be someone they are not. Nevertheless, thanks to Fraser’s performance, I felt I connected deeply with the story; although there is drama and a touch of comedy, I felt I was watching a story that was worthwhile and that leaves you with a positive feeling of having seen a good film. I’m glad that Brendan Fraser is still acting and that, despite the time he spent away from the screen, he still feels passionate about what he does.

La empresa llamada Rental Family se encubre como una empresa normal pero da este tipo de servicios y tiene a otros dos trabajadores japoneses que también cumplen el mismo propósito que Fraser. Sin embargo, puede ser algo muy curioso y triste que alguien tenga que contratar un servicio y que el que lo da tenga que fingir ser alguien que no es. Sin embargo, con la interpretación de Fraser sentí que conecte mucho con la historia, aunque puede verse el drama y también un poco de comedia, me sentí viendo una historia que valía la pena y que deja una sensación positiva de haber visto una buena historia. Me alegra que siga Brendan Fraser actuando y que a pesar del tiempo que estuvo sin actuar, aún sienta pasión por lo que hace.

The situations depicted are crazy, but they manage to leave you with something to think about, particularly because, through this kind of work, Fraser was able to find a safe space and people with whom, although he met through work, the bond was far more important. I really enjoyed this story and loved the film; I feel that Fraser’s acting is genuine and that he’s well worth watching on screen. What’s more, the set design and direction in Hikari gave it that authentic feel of being in a country like Japan, so modern and developed in so many ways. It’s worth noting that the visuals were spectacular and really showcase just how incredible Japan is, with its towering buildings and unique customs. If you’re looking for something to make you laugh now and then and leave you with a warm feeling, don’t hesitate to watch this film – it’s absolutely brilliant. 🎥🍿

Las situaciones que se presentan son alocadas, pero que tienen una forma de dejarte una buena reflexión sobre todo porque al hacer este tipo de trabajo, Fraser pudo encontrar un espacio seguro y personas que aunque conoció por el trabajo, el vínculo fue más importante. Disfrute mucho de esta historia y me encantó la película, siento que la forma de actuar de Fraser es genuina y que vale la pena verlo en escena. Además, la escenografía y la dirección de Hikari le dio ese toque de estar en un país como Japón, tan actualizado y desarrollado en tantos aspectos. Hay que destacar que las imágenes fueron espectaculares y muestran lo increíble que es Japón, con sus grandes edificios y las costumbres de ese país. Si quieren ver algo que les haga reír de vez en cuando y que también les dejé una sensación bonita, no duden en ver esta película que está increíble. 🎥🍿
