[Movie] Powerful Performance: "The Woman King" Review

Another movie I came across while reading some reviews in the community, I may have seen it somewhere else because it didn't seem like the first time I was hearing about the movie but that review gave me the push to download and see it days later and I'm here to share my personal thoughts and my experience seeing the movie.

Of course, I totally loved the idea of seeing the movie when I read that it is a movie based on true events. Nowadays, it's either I'm seeing a movie based on true events or an actual biographical movie and the experience have been more than just entertainment but enlightening too. This movie is all of those goodies for me.

"The Woman King" is an historical epic, action and drama released in the year 2022 starring Viola Davis as Nanisca, Thuso Mbedu as Nawi, Lashana Lynch as Izogie, Sheila Atim as Amenza and John Boyega as King Ghezo. "The Woman King" is written by Dana Stevens and Maria Bello, and it's directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

The story is based on the true story of events that happened in the Kingdom of Dahomey, as said on my search, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. It explores the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca, a leader of an all-female unit of warriors as she trains the next generation of new recruits.

As the warriors prepare for battles against their enemy who is determined to destroy them, truths begin to unfold. One of the recruits, Nawi seem extraordinary in her training like Nanisca, she dares to go on battles after a few training, she acts adamant to rules and even gets involved with a guy against the rules of their all-female warrior crew. But she makes the story more lively.

Other two supporting characters worth mentioning are Izogie and Amenza, especially Izogie who seem to catch the attention of viewers in her roles. I didn't expect I'll find a scene to laugh to with the fierceness shown in the whole vibe of the story but Izogie made that possible, I laughed a few times and tensed again.

There is a lot I'd love to say about the movie but one thing is for sure, it's a movie you'd love to see regardless of what some of the reviews say. I was surprised to see negative reviews on the movie, but I understand that movies trying to rewrite history can get a lot of that, especially from those people who know quite a lot about it.

Still, The Woman King is a good and well played movie that is based on true event. The cinematography too, I couldn't stop admiring how they were able to recreate those antiques to show a time in the 80s. I kinda had some kinda bias watching it because it's about a place in Africa and even had a familiar character (King Ghezo) who speaks in the vibe of an African man.
