That has to be one of the weirdest names for an animal ever, it turns out it has it roots on the greek language words for horse (Hippos) and river (Potamos), so yeah it's a River Horse, in fact in german they call it just that, Flusspferd...

BTW don't be fooled by this cute image of a Hippo, they are one of the most dangerous and aggressively territorial animals on the planet, I remember reading somewhere there are around 500 deaths related to Hippos annually, that's less than ~1000 related to crocodiles but still a lot.

Hippos are adorable except when they open those gaping maws and haybales disappear. Then they're mildly terrifying.
