The Ethereum Purge

The Ethereum Purge

As the world of Blockchains technology continues to evolve Ethereum continues to lead the smart contract revolution which has seen the rise in Decentralised Finance (De-Fi) and Decentralised applications (DApps).

More recently Ethereum underwent a major upgrade which introduced crucial changes to Ethereum's consensus and execution layers. and added sharding which aimed at freeing up the network and reducing congestion that would see it continue to grown and increase it’s ability to retain and attract new projects.

Although the upgrade was supposed to help drive Ethereum further and lower fees, the uptake was way under expectations but that hasn’t stopped progress as this change is brought in to support future growth and prevent congestion.

Now we are seeing Ethereum is once again embarking on a journey of simplification and optimisation. Led by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin the recent announcements regarding the Ethereum protocol's future changes focus on reducing how much data is carried forward.

Targeted Changes

The focal point of these changes is "The Purge," a strategic initiative aimed at streamlining the Ethereum protocol by reducing historical data storage requirements.

This upgrade completely changes blockchain technology and what traditionally made Crypto currency that promoted transparency and retention of information that would live on a blockchain forever.

This alteration seeks to alleviate the burden on node operators' hard drives and thereby mitigating the technical debt associated with the protocol.

Buterin's vision for Ethereum's evolution revolves around simplification and efficiency. By implementing Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) such as EIP-6780, which reduces the functionalities of the "SELFDESTRUCT" code and enhances security measures Ethereum is laying the foundation for a more robust and scalable network that can continue well into the future.

At It's Core

One of the key aspects of The Purge is the optimization of data storage on the Ethereum blockchain. EIP-4444 introduces the concept of "blobs" for specific data storage purposes, This aims at reducing long term storage requirements and facilitating easier node participation. Additionally, older blocks will be automatically removed after a designated time further reducing storage needs and enhancing overall efficiency.

The Purge aims to enhance Ethereum's node decentralization by distributing historical data more effectively across the network. While not all nodes will store complete historical data solutions such as block explorers and decentralized peer-to-peer networks are being explored to ensure accessibility. So the information will still live on the blockchain, just not in the same place as everything else and a new mechanism will be developed to support access granting.

Addressing storage concerns isn’t the only thing this upgrade will change as The Purge also entails re-evaluating and refining precompiled Ethereum contracts and introducing a new data structure called SimpleSerialize (SSZ) to replace the current block structure. These changes are expected to simplify data usage and development processes, further enhancing Ethereum's capabilities.

Winds Of Change

It’s not all clear sailing those as amidst these developments, Buterin has raised concerns about the complexity of layer 2 scaling solutions within the blockchain ecosystem. While Ethereum continues to prioritise simplicity and security there is a need for a balanced approach to development to ensure the integrity and longevity of the network.

Ethereum's path forward involves not only optimising its core protocol that will once again create a new form of blockchain that is relevant in the current age, but one that will also support developers to build scalable and secure applications. Ethereum has long been the driving force of change in the decentralised world and it is once again redefining what it means to be a "rollup".

While emphasising security enhancements Ethereum aims to solidify its position as a leading platform for decentralized innovation and remain at the top of the food chain of the decentralised world. While Bitcoin is seen as the digital gold of the crypto world, Ethereum can easily be seen as the “work place” of this sector. Ethereum continues to attract new investment and projects who seek to integrate digital assets within their businesses and remain relevant in the modern world.

As Ethereum enters this new phase of development that will once again redefine the sector, many await the positive impact of The Purge and other future developments on the network's scalability, security and usability. With Vitalik Buterin at the helm Ethereum has driven Blockchain further forward than any other project to date and his ability to navigate these changes and emerge stronger and more resilient than ever is well supported.
