If you are going to travel as a couple, make sure you have a good partner.
That was the advice Patricia and Luis received when they began to think about their journey to migrate to another country. They had been dating for a couple of years and were already starting to plan a life together, the situation in their country, Venezuela, was not the best and there was no sign that it would improve in a reasonable time for them.
They wanted to start a family, but they did not want to give a bad future to their children, when they had them, and it was not what they expected for them either.

Luis was a dreamer, and he could not be more in love with Patricia, every day he thought of ideas to develop his skills and entrepreneurship, to improve his quality of life and that of his family, but the suffocating economic situation of the country gave him no respite to start his projects. She was very encouraged with her ideas and also imagined the things they could achieve together, she imagined not having economic problems and enjoying a better life.

That is how they decided to set off for Uruguay, passing through several countries on a road trip, they would stay a few days studying the situation in each country to evaluate whether to stay and try their luck or continue to the chosen destination.

When they set off on the trip, Carlos, Luis' older brother, was worried and pending, it took a week to hear from them again, Luis posted on his Facebook wall a picture of him and Patricia with a short description: "We have been victims of robbery on the Colombian-Venezuelan border, but we are fine, without phones to communicate, and with a little less money, but together and happy on our trip. We will be reporting whenever possible". He was able to publish thanks to someone who agreed to lend him his Smartphone for a moment to warn the families, and due to the short time he used this social network.

Carlos' concern rose, although he was relieved to hear from them, he was still worried about not being able to have more frequent communication with his brother.

So the days went by and at least a couple of times a month they knew something new by another publication, they were not able to answer messages, he always described what they were doing and where they were, "trying their luck in Bogota, it is cold but our love warms the situation" "In the sanctuary of the Lajas de Ipales, With God as a witness, my father's medal in my pocket and my beloved Patricia by the hand, soon we will cross to Ecuador" "We managed to cross in Rumiacha, we are going to Tulcán, we are going to try our luck there, it seems to be a good place to establish a business" and so on in every city they saw interesting on their way.

image.png
PexelsūüĒó

Luis always looked smiling although tired and more sunburned, Patricia did not look very happy, maybe the trip was not the adventure she had imagined and in some photos she was not facing the camera.

At one point Carlos began to worry, they were almost 4 months into their journey and the last update he had was in Peru, about 3 weeks ago, and since then no other update. More days passed and no more signs of activity.

That is when Carlos contacted Patricia's family to see if they knew anything about them. They told him that she was in Chile, that she was no longer with Luis, that they did not know anything about him, she was with a friend who received her, to which Carlos asked them for the contact to be able to talk to her and to give him more information, in order to know the whereabouts of his brother.

image.png
PexelsūüĒó

When she contacted Patricia, she was not very kind, on the contrary, she was cold and quite terse in her words: "Carlos, there was no way to make him see reason, he was like crazy, determined to continue wandering, we no longer had money, we had to wash dishes in restaurants to pay for the food, I told him that we should go to Uruguay at once and he did not want to, I had already lost 4 kilos more or less, I called my cousin here in Chile and he told me to come, I took a bus and left him there in Piura, don't bother me anymore Carlos, I finally have a job, you never know where Luis is".

Carlos reached the extreme of worrying, because his brother, even though he had been separated, would not have lost communication with him, he always found someone and with his sympathy, he gained the confidence to reach out to him and allow him to communicate, even if it was by posting on facebook.

With nothing else he could do, he turned to Facebook every day, thinking that Luis would answer him at some point, he reviewed the old publications and in one of them he saw a message from a man who wrote, "Brother, we are waiting for you here in Uruguay when you decide to come", then he thought that he could be his contact in that country and that maybe he could give him reasons for his brother. But when she wrote to him, his answer was that he had not heard anything from Luis, that he had not arrived there.

image.png
PexelsūüĒó

Desperate and with more doubts than answers, and the bad feeling that something had happened to his brother, he decided to start the trip, with no other logbook than the last photos and publications that Luis had made, and with these as a reference to follow his steps, Carlos would also follow the route that his brother had told him he would follow on his way.

On the way, Carlos stopped at every immigrant shelter he came across, to see if he could find him on his way back, if anyone had seen him or if his registration was marked there, he also consulted at some of the border customs, the list of missing persons was long and he heard the stories of those who got lost along the way as well.

Analyzing the records with dates, he realized that Luis had reached Peru and did not cross the border again, with no more clues to follow and no sign, he decided to go to Chile with Patricia, taking advantage that her family had given him the address where she was and it was not difficult for him to find her.

IMG_20220606_150503_1.jpg
PexelsūüĒó

When she opened the door to Carlos, Patricia was very surprised, she let him in, but she seemed a little tense, he told her about his journey looking for Luis and how fruitless it had been, he wanted to know if she had told him anything, somewhere she might have gone, she said she did not know anything, that they only argued and she went another way, but she never heard from him again.

At one point she got up to go to the bathroom and left Carlos alone in the living room, he observed the house and noticed a container that was in front of a mirror as a jewelry box, then he saw something that for him was unmistakable, the medal that had been his father's, who was a military man and gave it to Luis before he died, he knew that he would not have given it to anyone, except to a son as a form of inheritance. This aroused in Carlos even more suspicions that Patricia was hiding something.

IMG_20220604_234036.jpg
PexelsūüĒó

When Patricia returned, he confronted her demanding explanations as to why she had that, where her brother was, he was so upset that he would not let her speak bombarding her with questions and repeating them over and over again, she tried to say the same thing she had repeated so far, but her nerves betrayed her and she shouted, "I didn't mean to push him!" Hearing that, Carlos was speechless and stopped in his tracks the reproach he was giving her, she collapsed in tears and repeated the same thing, "I just wanted to leave, I didn't mean to hurt him."
Carlos left with his father's medal in his hand and filed a report.

The authorities took her for questioning, Patricia quickly felt cornered and after much repetition of how tired she was of the trip confessed that she no longer believed in Luis' dreams, that they were in a city near the border of Chile and Peru and had rented a phone to communicate with the family and in an oversight of Luis, she took the opportunity to send voice messages to the man who received her in Chile, She told him that she was willing to go live with him, that she was going to leave Luis, but she did not realize that he heard her, and later when they were walking down the road and they were alone, Luis began to complain to her, he told her that he had heard her talking to that man, and they argued.

She had told him that she no longer wanted to continue with him, that she was going to go another way, but Luis kept walking next to her and complaining, she got so upset that she pushed him, he lost his balance and fell down the side of the road that was a ravine, when she saw that he was not moving, she went down, as she could, to look for him, when she saw that he was not moving, she went down, as she could, to look for him, but she could not do anything for him, he had broken his neck in the fall! So she took the money she had in her pockets and the medal to make it look like a robbery, she just wanted to have a good life no matter what she did.

IMG_20220606_141708_1.jpg
PexelsūüĒó

She was tried for unintentional homicide, Carlos had no other consolation than to solve the enigma that troubled him, but at the cost of the pain of knowing that his brother had died that way. By notifying the authorities in that area of Peru, they confirmed that they had found a corpse several weeks ago in the area they were describing, so he could give his brother a proper burial after such a journey.
