I Bought Turay For P50: It Fed My Family For Four Meals

Early in the morning, I heard the fish vendor's megaphone blaring out...
"Turay, singkwenta lang ang kilo. Isra kamo dyan... Isra!" (“Turay! Just fifty pesos per kilo! Fresh fish here… Fish!”)
I didn't even think twice. I rushed outside, afraid he might pass our street before I could reach him.
Imagine... P50/$0.85 per kilo. That price was something I couldn't ignore.
These days, it already feels like a small victory to hear food being sold that cheaply.
When I reached him, he opened a new, big plastic bag.

He scooped the fish and handed me a full kilo.

The fish was fresh, not like the last time I bought turay when it was almost sold out.

This time, the fish was still firm.
And there was that clean, fresh smell.
I started cleaning it one by one.
When I was done, I was thinking about what we should eat for breakfast.
I asked my hubby and without hesitation, he said, "The fish you bought."
So that settled it.
I immediately rubbed salt onto the fish and started heating oil in the pan.

But while doing that, I noticed something.
One of the turay looked like it was carrying a tiny heart inside.

Of all shapes, it really had to be a heart? As if the fish was reminding me that it didn't just come cheap, it came with feelings too. 😅
Anyway, I cook them in hot oil.
Then we still had rice from last night, so I turned it into fried rice.
Fried rice is always the perfect partner for fried fish.
To complete the meal, I also prepared soy sauce with chopped onions.

That combination alone can make anyone eat more in the morning.
So that's it. Our breakfast is complete.
See...
P50. That was all it cost. Yet, it could feed my family. Not just once, but I think we could stretch it into four meals.
Until my next morning...
Thanks for the visit! Have a lovely day. Buh-bye. 💗🌸

I'm not good at the name of the fishes but your breakfast seems delicious you're lucky to have bought only for 50 pesos. And you've enjoyed your meal.
That fish is tasty. It's cheap maybe because it has a lot of fish bones, but still, that P50 is really worth it. 🌷
Oh, tamban ata to samin and today its 140 per kilo here 🫠. Grabidada. Ang laki ng difference. Pero grabi nakakamiss tooo sarao talaga ng fried nyan sahay may toyomansi. Tas with gulay pa as sides or kamatis kaya. The best!

I love how you captured that small, simple joy of finding fresh fish at a great price, it really shows how the little things in life can feel like victories. This is our family comforting food, for sure kapag ito ang ulam mapapa unli rice talaga kami.
