[ESP] | [ENG] — ¿Tener más de una pasión es una ventaja? || Having more than one passion is an advantage?

La típica pregunta que suelen realizarnos cuando somos niños es: “¿qué quieres ser cuando seas grande?”. A esa edad la respuesta parece ser sencilla y no mostramos titubeo al contestar, pero conforme pasa el tiempo y vamos creciendo esa pregunta se transforma en una mucho más compleja. Cuando somos apenas unos niños vamos cambiando constantemente de parecer y eso es algo que no parece preocuparnos demasiado, pero ya de adultos nuestra respuesta a esa típica pregunta va tomando un poco más de color y forma e incluso se va sumergiendo en esa atmósfera preocupante de tener que tomar decisiones importantes que marcaran tu futuro.

Sin embargo, en muchas ocasiones, ni siquiera con el pasar del tiempo somos capaces de tomar una decisión y definir cuál es esa única cosa a la que nos gustaría dedicarnos, por lo que llegamos a pensar que no tenemos una vocación, cuando lo que en realidad ocurre es que tenemos tantos intereses que es difícil seleccionar uno solo. Si en algún momento te has encontrado inmerso en esa situación o si lo estás reconociendo ahora, pues déjame decirte algo: ¡bienvenido al grupo de las personas mutipotenciales!

Hace poco llegué a sentirme realmente mal e incluso decepcionada de mí misma. Recuerdo que cuando tomé la decisión de cuál era la carrera universitaria que quería ejercer por el resto de mi vida, lo hice con total seguridad, pero llegué a un punto en donde me di cuenta de que me gustaban también otras áreas, lo cual me llevó a cuestionarme si mi carrera había sido la elección correcta. En ese punto fue donde me sentí decepcionada de mí misma y comencé a recriminarme por tener gusto hacia otras áreas diferentes e incluso contemplé la posibilidad de cambiar de carrera o intentar cursar las dos en simultáneo. Para mí eso era algo inaceptable, porque iba en contra de lo que me habían enseñado: no puedes ser dos cosas al mismo tiempo. No puedes ser ingeniero y a la vez cantante, no puedes ser médico y a la vez bailarina, no puedes estudiar derecho y antropología al mismo tiempo, no puedes ser químico y a la vez deportista y tener un gusto por la repostería y la nutrición. Realmente llegué a pensar que algo estaba verdaderamente mal conmigo, pero luego comprendí que la sociedad es la que está mal, pues de nada sirve colocarnos una única etiqueta y encasillarnos en una sola cosa.

The typical question we are often asked as children is: "What do you want to be when you grow up?". At that age the answer seems to be simple and we don't hesitate to answer, but as time goes by and we grow up, that question becomes much more complex. When we are just children we are constantly changing our minds and that is something that does not seem to worry us too much, but as adults our answer to that typical question is taking a little more color and shape and is even immersed in that worrying atmosphere of having to make important decisions that will mark your future.

However, in many occasions, not even with the passing of time we are not able to make a decision and define what is the only thing we would like to dedicate ourselves to, so we come to think that we do not have a vocation, when what actually happens is that we have so many interests that it is difficult to select just one. If at some point you have found yourself in this situation, or if you are recognizing it now, let me tell you something: welcome to the group of mutipotential people!

I recently came to feel really bad and even disappointed in myself. I remember that when I made the decision of which college career I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life, I did it with full confidence, but I came to a point where I realized that I liked other areas as well, which led me to question whether my career had been the right choice. It was at that point that I felt disappointed in myself and began to berate myself for liking other areas and even contemplated the possibility of changing careers or trying to pursue both at the same time. For me that was unacceptable, because it went against what I had been taught: you can't be two things at the same time. You can't be an engineer and at the same time a singer, you can't be a doctor and at the same time a dancer, you can't study law and anthropology at the same time, you can't be a chemist and at the same time a athlete and have a taste for baking and nutrition. I really came to think that something was really wrong with me, but then I realized that society is the one that is wrong, because it is useless to put a single label and pigeonhole us in one thing.

Si viajamos un poco al pasado, recordaremos que el hombre renacentista era reconocido por ser polímata, pues destacaba en diversas ramas y dominaba varias disciplinas. Para aquel momento alcanzar la excelencia en varios campos del saber era algo sumamente admirable, caso contrario a lo que sucede hoy en día donde se busca que nos formemos en única especialidad, sin dar vuelta atrás. Tener varias pasiones puede tener sus pros y sus contras y, quizás, muchos dirán que eso es algo que no te llevará a tener algo concreto en tu vida, pero esto último no es del todo cierto. Si bien es cierto que tener diversas motivaciones y pasiones pueda costarte poner un foco en tu vida, también es cierto que puede convertirte en una persona llena de virtudes y potencialidades.

No está mal tener varias pasiones, no está mal que no quieras comprometerte en algo para siempre, no está mal salir de nuestra zona de confort e ir por la vida experimentado para descubrir nuevas actividades o áreas que nos llamen la atención. Muchas personas podrán tacharte de que estás abandonando las cosas sin haberlas comenzado realmente, pero al final de cuentas lo que interesa es nuestro crecimiento, pulir nuestras habilidades y sentirnos libres al realizar aquellas cosas que tanto nos gustan.

If we travel back in time, we remember that the Renaissance man was known for being a polymath, because he excelled in various branches and mastered several disciplines. At that time, achieving excellence in several fields of knowledge was something highly admirable, contrary to what happens nowadays, where we are expected to be trained in only one specialty, without turning back. Having several passions can have its pros and cons and, perhaps, many will say that this is something that will not lead you to have something concrete in your life, but the latter is not entirely true. While it is true that having diverse motivations and passions can cost you to put a focus in your life, it is also true that it can make you a person full of virtues and potential.

It is not wrong to have several passions, it's not bad that you don't want to commit to something forever, it is not wrong to get out of our comfort zone and go through life experimenting to discover new activities or areas that catch our attention. Many people may accuse you of abandoning things without having really started them, but at the end of the day what matters is our growth, polishing our skills and feeling free to do those things we like so much.
