Greetings ladies of Hive, today is an excellent time to participate in this community's contest, questions made by the lady @nainaztengra, who made me return to my childhood.

When you were a child, what was your favorite fairy tale and how much did you believe in it? Once upon a time... Cinderella, a story that inspires hope and kindness, always captivated me from a young age. The idea of a fairy working magic on things that already existed was the ultimate for me. Transforming a poor, unfortunate little girl into a distinguished young woman in a ball gown and glass slippers, a simple pumpkin into a luxurious carriage, made me feel that one day I would experience a similar transformation. I always hoped for a Fairy Godmother to rescue me; in fact, I had many, but at the time I didn't recognize it. Cinderella is a classic tale that I had the privilege of reading at a neighbor's house where they had a collection of stories. That story captivated me immediately, and in my most vulnerable moments I thought of my Fairy Godmother, of her magic wand that came to rescue me. Reading it gave me back hope; I was certain that good triumphs over evil and that dreams do come true, even without glass slippers.

What is something you believed as a child that you later discovered wasn't true?
When we are little, we are very vulnerable and susceptible to believing that what we are told, what we hear, or what we imagine is real. We live on illusions and with very vivid imaginations. I never received gifts from Santa Claus, Baby Jesus, or the Three Wise Men, yet I believed in their existence. When I saw my neighbors the next morning enjoying their toys, of course, I didn't understand why I didn't get any. No one explained it to me. A friend told me, "Maybe they left the light on and he didn't want to be seen, that's why he didn't come in." It's true, the front door of my house had a lightbulb; it was never turned off. I never asked my mother to turn it off, nor did I ask her why my brother and I never received gifts. I was very young and innocent. When my mother died, I lived for a short time at my older sister's house; I was already ten years old. My sister bought gifts for her three children and me, but I saw when she put each one in its place, that's when I understood everything, I knew that the world wasn't the same for everyone and why I didn't receive gifts living with my mom, we were too poor, we barely had enough to eat, I felt sorry for my mom, I felt guilty for wanting a gift so much, I didn't tell anyone what I had discovered, I carried that sadness alone.

In my tender innocence, I believed in many things, not only in wonderful beings who brought gifts, but also in the fact that if I swallowed a watermelon seed, a plant could grow in my stomach. When that happened, I was always on the lookout for anything strange in my belly. Once, someone told me that if I pointed at a rainbow, I would lose my finger. Once, out of rebellion, I did it; I pointed at the rainbow with my index finger, and that's when I knew it was all a lie. I also believed that telling lies would make my nose grow. I always believed, and I held onto this belief until I was older, that when someone I knew died, they would go out at midnight exactly. I avoided getting up to pee at that hour; I had a feeling that at any moment a dead person would appear. At night, I would leave my flip-flops in a cross shape so that no spirit would approach me; I couldn't go to bed without doing so. I also believed in the mouse, that thing that never brought me money, and in the treasure at the end of the rainbow. We were so innocent back then that anything an adult told us was absolute truth. Nothing was questioned, nothing was doubted.
Someone told me the moon walked beside me to watch over me, and I was always moving to hide from it. If I hid under the table, they said I'd stay small forever. How innocence! Everything was real to me. As we grow up, we begin to see reality, to investigate, and to doubt the strange ideas and beliefs they try to sell us. We take responsibility for what we want to believe or not.

I found the magic of Santa Claus so magical and beautiful that I passed it on to my children. They believed in Santa and received their gifts just as they wished. I don't know if I wanted to experience that magic through them, but I always tried to fulfill their wishes and live the magic that surrounded the moment.

Oh dear, what a terrible feeling of being neglected when you were such a young child. Poverty is in every city, town and country as more families become impoverished in my country. I'm glad you found some perspective and come to experience the Joy of Christmas through your children @mariperez316
And Thank you for reminding me of a local Charity that collects wrapped toy gifts for children of impoverished families. I am in the process of determining my Charitable giving for this Christmas of 2026.

Cinderella has been my favorite fairy tale too. I so loved her character and the magic of fairy god mother. Whenever I would be in despair, I would remember fairy god mother, because I thought she was the one who could resolve all issues.
