Music captivates people, for one reason or another. There are a variety of rhythms to suit every taste, including dance music such as salsa, merengue, bachata, son cubano, and others. This time, I’m featuring salsa—and it’s not “Képchut.” According to some historians, it originated in Cuba and then spread to Latin America, but there are many discrepancies on this point; I think what matters is that it’s here to stay.

Later came erotic salsa, baúl salsa, romantic salsa, among others. It’s a rhythm danced close together and in a tight circle. For this week, I’ve selected three songs and my little bonus track—they bring back fond memories to share with my friends at #TreeTuneTuesday and @ablaze. I’m bringing you salsa to dance to. I’m turning on my jukebox and time machine.

My musical memories date back to my teenage years and began with the Fania All Stars and their artists. I’m fascinated by all of them; to me, they represent the pinnacle of salsa. Among their artists, one stands out: the Puerto Rican Roberto Roena. I started with Cortijo and his combo. Later, in 1960, he formed the group Apollo Sound, which was very successful. His song “Mi desengaño” is, for me, one of the best songs by the Fania All Stars.

This time, I’m bringing you another side of Roena as a bandleader. In 1997, he released the album “Mi música” in a style that was all the rage at the time—romantic salsa—and the well-known song “Cómo te hago entender” became a hit, featuring the vocals of Pablo Briceño and Gustavo Gerardo. Here’s an old video featuring Puerto Rican singer Héctor “Tempo” Alomar, who made this song famous.

Another salsa artist I like is my friend, the American singer-songwriter Marc Anthony. I haven't found anything significant about him online. In any case, what I like is his music. Here's a song he wrote about life.

La música envuelve a los seres humanos, por uno u otro motivo. Hay variados ritmos para todos los gustos, entre ellos todo lo que pá bailar, tales como la salsa, merengues, bachata, son cubano y otros. En esta oportunidad traigo salsa y no es “Képchut”. Según algunos historiadores, se origina en Cuba y luego se expande a Latinoamérica, pero sobre esto hay muchas discrepancias; creo que lo importante es que llegó para quedarse.
Después aparece la salsa erótica, salsa baúl, salsa romántica, entre otras. Ritmo que se baila apretadito y en un ladrillito.
Para esta semana seleccioné tres canciones y mi ñapita, me traen lindos recuerdos para compartir con los amigos de #TreeTuneTuesday y @ablaze, les traigo salsa pá bailar. Enciendo mi rockola musical y máquina del tiempo.

Mis recuerdos musicales comienzan en mis años de adolescente y comenzaron con la Fania All Star y sus representantes. Todos estos me fascinan; para mí esto es lo máximo en salsa. Entre sus representantes hay uno que se destaca, el puertorriqueño Roberto Roena. Inicio con Cortijo y su combo. Posteriormente, en el año 1960, creó la agrupación Apollo Sound, la cual fue muy exitosa. Su canción “Mi desengaño” es para mí una de las mejores canciones de la Fania All Star.
En esta oportunidad les traigo el otro lado de Roena como líder de agrupación. En el año 1997 lanza el álbum “Mi música”, en un ritmo que estaba de moda, la salsa romántica, y se convierte la canción conocida “Cómo te hago entender” en un éxito. En las voces de Pablo Briceño y Gustavo Gerardo. Les dejo un video viejito en la voz del puertorriqueño Héctor “Tempo” Alomar, este vocalista hizo famosa esta canción.

¡Wuao! Parece que fue ayer y, sin embargo, hoy en el año 2026 se han hecho muchas versiones de esta canción. Es un clásico de la salsa romántica.

Otro salsero que me gusta es mi amigo y cantautor estadounidense Marc Anthony. Sobre él no he encontrado nada importante en internet. De todas maneras, lo que me gusta es su música. Les dejo este canto a la vida.

Over time, landmark musical groups emerged, such as Dimensión Latina, the Orquesta Satélite, La Salsa Mayor, Los Satélites, Los Blanco, Silva y Guerra, and others. Likewise, we are a land of salsa dancers; we carry that incredibly tropical and hot rhythm in our blood. Most have achieved international prestige.

We have nothing to envy, for we are the best of the best, with singers such as: Argenis Carruyo, Oscar D’León, Mauricio Silva, Ray Pérez, Roberto Antonio, the Primera brothers, Oscarcito, Hildemaro, Manuel Guerra, Ronald Borjas, Nelsón Arrieta, Bany Kosta, among others. It was hard to choose because they’re all so good. That’s why I’ll use a technique that never fails me.

Wow! This song takes me back to my happiest moments—to my family, friends, and neighbors. It reminds me of home. I dedicate it to all Venezuelans who are away from home and far from their homeland. “Orgullo Venezolano” and “Llorarás” are some of his best songs.

I can’t leave without sharing my little Venezuelan gem with you—a Venezuelan singer-songwriter from Maracaibo known as Ronald Borges. He’s a young man who, despite his age, has already achieved great success. He was a member of Grupo Guaco. Check out a song called “Dime Cómo Hago,” which he recorded alongside Nelson Arrieta and Oscarcito.

Aunque usted no lo crea, en Venezuela, en los años 50 y 60, se bailaba salsa. Siendo Federico y su combo latino, pioneros en este ritmo. Con el paso del tiempo aparecen agrupaciones musicales que marcaron un hito, tales como Dimensión Latina, la Orquesta Satélite, La Salsa Mayor, Los Satélites, Los Blanco, Silva y Guerra y otros. Así mismo somos tierra de salseros, llevamos en la sangre ese ritmo tropicalisimo y caliente. La mayoría han logrado prestigio internacional.
No tenemos nada que envidiar, pues somos lo mejor de lo mejor, cantantes como: Argenis Carruyo, Oscar D’León, Mauricio Silva, Ray Pérez, Roberto Antonio, Los hermanos Primera, Oscarcito, Hildemaro, Manuel Guerra, Ronald Borjas, Nelsón Arrieta, Bany Kosta, entre otros. No puedo irme sin dejarle mi ñapita venezolana, y es un cantautor venezolano y maracucho conocido como Ronald Borges. Es un joven que, a pesar de su edad ha cosechado mucho éxitos. Estuvo en las filas del Grupo Guaco. Selecciones una canción conocida como “Dime Cómo Hago” , esta la grabó junto a Nelson Arrieta y Oscarcito.
