2022 1 oz Silver Dominica Mountain Chicken Coin.

It looks like a frog to me but they call it a Mountain Chicken on the 2022 Dominica "The Mountain Chicken" coin.

Since 2018 the Scottsdale Mint has been producing coins for the EC8(Eastern Caribean 8) encompassing 8 Caribean Island groups in the ECCB (Eastern Caribean Central Bank) who governs currency for these Island Countries. Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Commonwealth of Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Montserrat.

Dominica, nicknamed the "Nature Island of the Caribbean", is a small Island Country and the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles. Dominica is known for having lush mountains covered in rain forests giving home to many rare plants and animals. The island nation has a nice history and if you are interested in seeing more about it you can check out the Wiki page.

The obverse side features a frosted center with a side view of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by a laurel wreath. The shiny outer rim is inscribed with EASTERN CARIBBEAN CENTRAL BANK on the top, QUEEN ELIZABETH II on the bottom, .999 SILVER on the left and TWO DOLLARS on the right. This is the standard design for all of the EC8 series coins and was created by Ian Rank-Broadley.

The Reverse side features one of the largest frogs in the World known by the nickname "Mountain Chicken", the nickname is from the frog being a delicacy and said to taste like chicken. The image of the mountain chicken is in the center sitting on a rock with trees in the background. The insctiption on the top reads DOMINICA with 2022 just under it and "THE MOUNTAIN CHICKEN" on the bottom.

Hello, @maddogmike I hope you are doing well. Thank you for your post about the Mountain Chicken coin! This is fascinating because I started researching all about the Mountain Chicken that is a frog and I looked up why it's called a mountain chicken. Most of all, I wanted to know why would a frog would be put on a coin. ?The Mountain Chicken must be an important frog!

There are a few reasons why the Mountain chicken is somewhat famous in the Dominica in the Caribbean islands. (Dominica is not the same as the Domincan Replublic as I almost thought.)

The Mountain Chicken is one of the largest frogs in the world that was once eaten as a delicacy for it's Large Drumstick Sized Legs. This is why this frog is called a chicken for their large back legs. The Mountain chicken population was in great decline in 2002 in the Dominica and 2009 in Montserrat and the frogs were almost completely wiped out by the fungal disease amphibian chytridiomycosis There are only about 100 Mountain Chicken frogs left in the wild.

The Mountain Chickens are also culturally significant in the Dominica and Montserrat.
The people of Dominica and Montserrat are hopeful the Mountain Chicken frog can be successfully recovered. !BBH !CTP @maddogmike

Yeah it's unfortunate, the frog used to be on several of the islands but now is only known to be on two and they are critically endangered. Do to volcanic activity, that fungal disease and people eating them they are almost completely gone. I read that they having good success with breading in captivity thought.

Yes, that is sad but I'm happy the Mountain Chicken are being breeded to help bring them back in more numbers. The Kakapo bird/ parrot in New Zealand is a flightless parrot that is almost extinct. Scientists are trying to bring back the Kakapo slowly. The Kakapo were doing well and some of them died but a team of people are still working on bringing back the Kakapo. Life is so precious. We must do what we can as humans to help what is left - Not you individually but humanity as a whole. I'm glad they are having success with the frogs in captivity. The Kakapos are put back into the wild when they are old enough. The Kiwi bird of New Zealand is endangered too and is a flightless bird. They were eaten by animals that the people brought with them like cats and other invasive species like a weasel of some kind that killed so many of the land roaming birds. !BBH !CTP

Chickens pop up in all sorts of places. Here in Japan we have "sea chicken" (canned tuna), but I don't think it has appeared on a silver coin yet!

Found this post on Listnerds.

hahaha We have "Chicken Of The Sea" canned tuna here also, it's one of the top brands. You can probably find a tuna fish on a coin somewhere but it wont be called a chicken. 😄

It is a way to get more attention to it also being that it is critically endangered. Hopefully they will be able to make good progress bringing the frog back. It does look good on the coin also. !CTP

Yes, I hope so too. I also wish them luck in their efforts to bring it back in numbers.
