Beauty and Memory in the Gardens of the Hotel Nacional [en/es]
Greetings, friends of Architecture + Design. A few days ago, I shared my experience at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba, an icon of our history and architecture. However, I decided to reserve a special space to talk about its gardens. Although they are part of the hotel, they possess a unique charm and an eclectic design that blends perfectly with that of the hotel. They are a corner visited and enjoyed by Cubans, a place where you can spend an evening with your family without having to stay there, surrounded by spectacular views of the sea.
Un saludo, amigos de Arquitectura + Diseño. Hace unos días les compartí mi experiencia en el Hotel Nacional de Cuba, un ícono de nuestra historia y arquitectura. Sin embargo, decidí reservar un espacio especial para hablarles sobre sus jardines, pues, aunque forman parte del Hotel, poseen una magia propia y un diseño ecléctico que combina perfectamente con el del Hotel. Son un rincón visitado y disfrutado por los cubanos, un lugar donde se puede pasar una velada en familia sin necesidad de estar hospedado, rodeado de vistas espectaculares hacia el mar.
Walking through these gardens is like immersing yourself in a space where history and nature coexist in harmony. From the very first step, the breeze gently caresses your face while the rustling of leaves whispers through the abundant vegetation. The gaze travels through the trees until it meets the sea, with that beautiful blue strip stretching across the horizon, creating a mesmerizing image.
The hotel and its gardens have hosted memorable events, granting them a unique atmosphere. As soon as I stepped in, my attention drifted toward a group of peacocks, majestic creatures elegantly roaming among the visitors. There were more than ten, moving with the regal grace characteristic of their species, as if they were the guardians of the garden. Their brilliant plumage contrasted beautifully with the lush greenery, creating an unforgettable spectacle.
Caminar por estos jardines es sumergirse en un espacio donde la historia y la naturaleza conviven en armonía. Desde el primer paso, la brisa acaricia el rostro mientras el susurro de las hojas se hace presente gracias a la frondosa vegetación. La mirada se pierde entre los árboles hasta encontrarse con el mar, con esa franja azul que se dibuja en el horizonte, creando una hermosa imagen.
El hotel y sus jardines han albergado acontecimientos memorables, lo que les otorga una atmósfera singular. Apenas me adentré en el lugar, mi atención se desvió hacia un grupo de pavos reales, criaturas majestuosas que se paseaban con elegancia entre los visitantes. Eran más de diez, moviéndose con la gracia señorial propia de su especie, como si fueran los guardianes del jardín . Sus brillantes plumajes contrastaban con el verdor del jardín.
Further ahead, I saw a beautiful hexagonal fountain covered in colorful mosaics, in keeping with the garden's style, but a surprise awaited me as I continued straight ahead along the path. As I approached, I discovered a carved stone compass rose. This symbol has been fundamental in the history of navigation, guiding sailors across the ocean by orienting themselves to the cardinal points. At the center of the rose, a map of Cuba was prominently displayed, emphasizing the strategic importance of our island in the Caribbean. Standing atop this emblem, I felt an undeniable connection with history, as though the past was speaking to the present.
Más adelante, vi una hermosa fuente hexagonal cubierta de mosaicos de colores, acorde con el estilo del jardín, pero me esperaba una sorpresa al continuar recto por el sendero. Al acercarme, descubrí una rosa de los vientos tallada en piedra. Este símbolo ha sido fundamental en la historia de la navegación, guiando a los navegantes por el océano mediante la orientación de los puntos cardinales. En el centro de la rosa un mapa de Cuba, una representación que resaltaba la importancia estratégica de nuestra isla en el Caribe. Estar de pie sobre este emblema me hizo sentir parte de esa historia, como si el pasado dialogara con el presente.
These gardens are located at a high point in the city, culminating the hill overlooking the sea. In the 19th century, the famous Santa Clara battery was installed here, and to this day, the Ordóñez cannon, one of the largest of its time, remains on site. This historical monument, accompanied by an explanatory plaque, reminds us that even amid the luxury and sophistication of the Hotel Nacional, there are spaces that preserve our Cuban heritage.
Among the vegetation and military relics, the past still lingers. These cannons, stone guardians of old battles and defensive strategies, remind us that Havana was once one of the most coveted places in the Caribbean.
Estos jardines se encuentran en un punto elevado de la ciudad, culminando la colina frente al mar. En el siglo XIX, aquí se instaló la famosa batería de Santa Clara, y aún hoy permanece en el lugar el cañón Ordóñez, uno de los más grandes de su época. Este monumento histórico, acompañado de una tarja explicativa, nos recuerda que incluso en medio del lujo y la sofisticación del Hotel Nacional, se preservan rincones que atestiguan nuestra historia cubana.
Entre la vegetación y los vestigios militares, el pasado sigue latiendo. Estos cañones, guardianes de piedra de antiguas batallas y estrategias defensivas, nos recuerdan que La Habana, uno de los lugares más codiciado en el Caribe.
As I continued walking along the paths, the Malecón Habanero stretched into the distance, with the ocean seamlessly blending into the sky on the horizon. The salty sea breeze refreshed my stroll, intertwining with the whispers of the trees, creating an atmosphere of absolute serenity.
Mientras avanzaba por los senderos, el Malecón Habanero se extendía en la distancia, con el océano fundiéndose con el cielo en el horizonte. La brisa marina refrescaba el recorrido, mezclándose con el susurro de las hojas de los árboles, creando un ambiente de serenidad absoluta.
This stroll through the gardens of the Hotel Nacional was truly rewarding. I had always heard of their beauty, but nothing compares to experiencing it firsthand. I loved discovering how, amid opulence, distinctive marks of our history remain. This corner is a refuge where the present converses with the past and where beauty transforms into memory.
Este paseo por los jardines del Hotel Nacional fue una experiencia gratificante. Siempre había escuchado hablar de su belleza, pero nada se compara con vivirlo en primera persona. Me encantó descubrir cómo, en medio de la opulencia, persisten marcas distintivas de nuestra historia. Este rincón es un refugio donde el presente dialoga con el pasado y donde la belleza se transforma en memoria.

What a lovely journey through history and nature! I could almost feel the sea breeze and hear the peacocks rustling through the gardens while reading. The mix of architectural charm, military relics, and natural beauty makes the Hotel Nacional’s gardens feel truly magical. Beautiful photos too!

Those gardens are beautiful, I am amazed at the number of peacocks there. The view is one of the best things you can enjoy from there.

Es un lugar grandioso , esas aves por poco hacen que no preste atención a lo que estaba a su alrededor , ellas atraen como un hechizo . El lugar es una maravilla, además ver la pequeña sin temor entre ellos me sorprendió mucho también jaja ( amiga traduce el comentario, son reglas de la comunidad)

Este es uno de los lugares más hermosos que tenemos, es una combinación de maravillas, sus jardines bien cuidados, la compañía de los pavos reales, la vista al mar, la sombra fresca de sus árboles, su vínculo con la historia colonial y la belleza arquitectónica del hotel hacen que sea un lugar de belleza sin igual.
