Rechazarlo

Rechazar algo. O a alguien.

Y no volvió. No me arrepiento.

Imaginary story created in just five minutes, with touches of reality.

Rejecting It

This morning I woke up after seeing that word in the 5-minute writing prompt—it kept circling in my head: rejecting it. And I don’t know if it was because of the dream I had, or something one of my daughters told me last night, but I found myself thinking about how many times in life we have to make that decision. To reject something. Or someone. Or even a part of ourselves.

That word reminded me of when I was 20 years old. I turned down a job in Caracas at Banco Exterior, which at the time was the highest-paying bank. People said I was crazy, that the opportunity wouldn’t come again. And it didn’t. But time proved me right for rejecting it. I have no regrets.

A few years ago, I rejected the idea of leaving the country. Many friends and relatives left. Some are doing well, others not so much. I chose to stay. Because my wife and I decided: either the four of us go, or the four of us stay. But separating from my daughters and my wife? No. Never. Not out of stubbornness, but because this is where my story lives—my family, my land. Rejecting the exit was accepting that I wouldn’t leave my daughters and my wife behind.

That word also reminds me that I’ve had to reject resentment. Because if you hold on to what they did to you, to what never came, to what was lost… you turn to stone. And I don’t want to keep carrying resentment—that’s one of the many things I’ve chosen to reject.

Sometimes, rejecting something is the most honest way to say yes to what truly matters.
