A normal day in the life of an average Cuban woman (Eng/Esp)

¡Hola querida familia de Hive! Es un placer pasar nuevamente por acá para contarles cómo es un día normal en la vida de una cubana de a pie. Deseo que Dios los bendiga siempre y que tengan un excelente día.

First thing in the morning, I get up very early to cook as soon as the electricity comes on. That’s often in the early hours of the morning. On this occasion, I couldn’t cook using the electricity because the shops hadn’t opened yet to buy food, so I had to cook over a charcoal fire.

Lo primero es levantarme bien temprano para cocinar a la hora que pongan la electricidad. Eso puede ser de madrugada muchas veces. En esta ocasión no pude cocinar con la electricidad porque aún no habían abierto los negocios para comprar la comida, así que tocó hacerlo al carbón.

Before cooking, I went with my mother-in-law to help out at the car boot sale we hold in the ground floor of the building on Fridays and Saturdays. It was a pretty good day for sales, thank God; we even managed to add new members to our WhatsApp group where we promote our products.

Antes de cocinar fui junto a mi suegra a dedicarnos a vender en la venta de garaje que hacemos en los bajos del edificio los viernes y los sábados. Fue un día bastante bueno en las ventas gracias a Dios, incluso pudimos añadir nuevos miembros a nuestro grupo de WhatsApp donde promocionamos nuestros productos.

Although it promised to be a quiet and peaceful day, it didn’t turn out that way, as some young men tried to steal a pearl necklace—one of the most expensive items we had at the car boot sale. Thank goodness my mother-in-law was quicker off the mark and managed to hold one of the young men back; so the other two, who had run off with the necklace, had to come back and return it. Fortunately, a policewoman who lives in our neighbourhood also intervened, and we suffered no financial loss. It saddens me greatly to see such young lads falling into this sort of criminal behaviour. They must have been about 15 or 16 years old; it was clear they were only just starting to commit these acts, as their inexperience was evident. May God grant that these young people may turn away from the wrong path and take the right one.

Aunque prometía ser un día tranquilo y calmado no terminó siendo así, pues unos jóvenes intentaron robarnos un cinto de perlas que es de los artículos más costosos que tenemos en la venta de garaje. Gracias a Dios mi suegra fue más rápida y pudo aguantar a uno de los jóvenes, entonces los otros dos que se habían ido corriendo con el cinto tuvieron que regresar y devolverlo. Por fortuna también una policía que es vecina de nosotras intervino y no tuvimos ninguna pérdida económica. Me entristece mucho ver que muchachos tan jóvenes caigan en ese tipo de conductas delictivas. Debían tener unos 15 o 16 años, se veía que a penas estaban iniciando a cometer estos actos ya que era evidente su inexperiencia. Dios permita que estos jóvenes puedan apartarse de malos pasos y tomar el buen camino.

Although it had been a hectic morning, the day was only just beginning. We tried to close the shop early so that we could devote ourselves fully to lighting the charcoal. On this occasion, it took a little more effort than usual, but after a while and with quite a bit of hard work, we managed it.

Aunque había sido una mañana movida, el día tan solo estaba comenzando. Tratamos de cerrar temprano la tienda para poder dedicarnos de a lleno a encender el carbón. En esta ocasión nos costó un poco más de trabajo que otras veces, pero transcurrido un tiempo y con bastante esfuerzo se logró el objetivo.

We cooked something simple: white rice and picadillo, and the meal wouldn’t have been complete without a delicious coffee to finish. To cook the rice and the minced meat dish at the same time, we used the technique of placing the rice at the bottom and the frying pan with the minced meat on top, so that it would cook in the steam from the rice.

Cocinamos algo sencillo, arroz blanco, picadillo y no estaría completo el menú sin un rico café al final. Para cocinar el arroz y el picadillo al mismo tiempo, usamos la técnica de colocar el arroz debajo y el sartén con el picadillo encima, para que se cocinaran con el vapor del arroz.

I then set about taking some photos of the new clothes we had for sale to use in our promotions. I’m really happy because as soon as we posted them, people messaged me to buy a few things.

Luego me dediqué a tomar algunas fotos a ropas nuevas que teníamos para vender para hacer las promociones. Estoy muy feliz porque en cuanto las publicamos me escribieron para comprar algunas cosas.

Later it started to rain, and when it eased off a little, after having a shower and a meal, we went to the youth service at our beloved church. What a brilliant time we had! At the start we did lots of group activities, even some role-plays, and the pastor’s message was spectacular. For me, the key takeaway was that we must be careful not to squander all the blessings God has given us: our talents, love, health and financial resources. We should make the most of our time so that, when we reach the twilight of our lives, we can look back and reap the good fruits of the life we have chosen to live. I hope you enjoyed the post. Más tarde comenzó a llover y cuando escampó un poco, luego de bañarnos y comer fuimos al culto de jóvenes en nuestra amada iglesia. ¡Qué manera de divertirnos! Al inicio hicimos muchas dinámicas, hasta dramatizaciones, y el mensaje del pastor estuvo espectacular. Para mi la esencia fue que debemos guardarnos de no derrochar todas las bendiciones que Dios nos ha dado: los talentos, el amor, la salud, las posesiones económicas. Que aprovechemos de tal forma nuestro tiempo que cuando estemos en el ocaso de nuestra vida, al mirar atrás podamos cosechar buenos frutos de la vida que hayamos decidido vivir.
