The Garbage Pail Kids Play2Earn Game That Never Came to Be

frens, it hurts my soul to bring you this news but... I've been waiting patiently for this game to come and the news just broke that it's not going to happen.

6 months ago, I heard news that there would be a new Garbage Pail Kids NFT collection coming out. This was when everyone was trying to make a generative NFT profile picture project and it was built on WAX. I've always been a huge fan of Garbage Pail Kids and have NFTs from the Food Fight collection as well. This drop had me super hyped and I was so sure that it was going to sell out and these NFTs were going to be worth something in the future.

This isn't to say that they won't be or that they're worthless right now. It was a fun experience and I even minted an Error NFT due to an issue with the minting. They allowed users the opportunity to fix their Error NFTs and even came out with a one-time re-roll mechanic.

Nearly a month later, it was announced that a play to earn game was being built where you could use your NFTs to do missions. There was a lot of hype in the community around this as no one even thought it would happen when the minting of the NFTs was happening. Byron was the guy in Discord that communicated with everyone and dropped hints about the game as it was being built.

Nothing was said for nearly 2 months before the next update on the game. The news was that the artwork for the game was 95% done and the actual game was about 75% done. Byron talked about the token economy and how they were trying to create it in a way that ended up actually having value. He even dropped some of the non-finalized artwork into the Discord.

This obviously got the community very excited and the buzz was starting to come back. Not for long though as the team went completely silent and Byron has seemingly disappeared from the Discord. The Twitter account went completely stagnant and everyone started to get suspicious. Of course the words scam and rug pull got tossed around. People wanted answers. After months of no communication, the answers came.

While he did address the accusations of this project being a rug pull, he's not wrong. They never advertised this play to earn game until after the NFTs were sold and only promised to deliver the PFP NFTs. They did technically deliver everything that was promised, but it's still a shitty situation. I find it hard to believe that they "couldn't find anyone to complete the project" though.

I'm sure there's some developers in the actual GPK community itself that would love to help bring this thing to life. Was it a money issue? Maybe. They didn't sell half of the NFTs and I don't remember specifically how much they sold for initially. Either way - they did hint and tease a game which caused some investors to purchase these NFTs only for the game. This is where the big issue came up. They knew they had to do something or face the same legal issues other projects are facing when they fail to deliver.

They issued a refund to anyone that purchased on secondary market in anticipation of the game. That's really cool of them, and it was the right thing to do. It was still met with a lot of criticism from big investors that minted on launch of course. Why weren't we refunded? Well, we bought what they sold: a collection of profile picture NFTs that gave exclusive access to a community. That community being Discord, I guess.

I'm not mad and I never expected to get a refund. I'm just sad that they gave up so easily on making this a reality when it was so close to being complete. Either it was a completely made-up story (I can't see the motive) or just a shitty way that things played out. I don't understand why they started deleting everything or hiding the Discord channels. I guess we'll never know. RIP GPK Nifty Kids. I guess I'm stuck HODLing these til someone is willing to buy them as collector's items.
