The most annoying sound

One of the sense organs of humans is the ear which enables us to listen to conversation, music and pick up various sounds. Unfortunately for us, the ear doesn’t discriminate against sound and will always pick up any sound around us, including very annoying ones. It is then up to you to cover your ears with mufflers or noise-cancelling headphones, move away from the environment or just suffer through the annoying sound.

When it comes to pleasant sounds, music seems to be topping that list and it is rightly so because what other sound is better than music? (maybe the sound an ATM makes when you are withdrawing the money that was gifted to you). Music is the best pleasant sound I can think of but at the same time, music can be very annoying, especially when someone is playing a song you hate so much around you. It’s just like my neighbour that has been playing a particular song for the past week and it has started to seriously get on my nerves.

Anytime she starts playing it, my skin crawls and I feel like cutting off my ear. The only solution is to play something nice on my Bluetooth speaker to overshadow her music. There are lots of other sounds which I find naturally annoying, like when a person scratches their fingers on a book, the high-pitched sound a microphone makes when it is still being tuned, and so on. But the worst of these annoying sounds is:

Mosquito sound

Those of us who live in Africa know that mosquitoes are basically like terrorists over here. They are very dangerous because they cause malaria and as if that is not enough, they have very painful stings and very annoying sounds which are produced by their wings. Now you see why I call them terrorists? The one thing I hate the most about them is the annoying sound they make and not even their stings. Yes, the stings are painful but the sounds are irritating.

The worst mosquito experience I had was back in the university, at my department's experimental fish farm. I studied aquaculture and fisheries management, which means I was always surrounded by fish tanks, and if there's one place mosquitoes love the most, it's water. My friends and I sometimes spend the night on campus, especially when exams are approaching just so we can read all through the night. We sleep at the farmhouse and get feasted on by mosquitoes. I always go there with my hoodie and earpods to block my ears against the annoying mosquitoes.

There have been cases when I gave myself a painful slap out of frustration just because I was trying to kill a mosquito. And the worst thing is that these mosquitoes know what they are doing and always fly close to my ear just to torment me. It's even more frustrating when you're trying to sleep and they keep singing a devilish lullaby to you, the type of lullaby that takes sleep away. Another insect that has an annoying sound similar to mosquitoes is houseflies, but at least those ones don't always make an attempt to invade your ears and I guess the annoying thing about them is that they are always making contact with you, which can be very irritating.
