Inferiority Experience

I must say that the modern world has had a lot of impact on the learning process in our schools, especially in rural areas. With the rate we are now, we can boast that 95% of students in elementary and high schools can communicate moderately in English language, compared to what we had in early 2000.
Although there are still some schools where their local dialects are used in teaching but there are just a few.

During my elementary school years, speaking English was very foreign to most of us; the only people who knew how to speak good English were the children from wealthy homes. It's not like teachers used vernacular to teach us in school; no, they used English, and we understood it well, but to reciprocate in terms of speaking became a problem.
We were so keen on the local dialect, to the extent that the teachers introduced 'names of vernacular speakers' (flogging vernacular speakers) in order to make us adapt to the English language, but it never worked.

I can vividly remember this:
*There was a period when our class teacher mandated that anyone who wanted to go out for conveniences must get permission from him and it must be with English language. Omo! It was so difficult for most of us, even when we were pressed. *
*Meanwhile the 'Ajebos'(rich kids), especially the girls, were going in and out. I almost peed in my nicker if not for the fact that I summoned courage to say, **"Excuse me, sir, I want to ease myself"****.

Life in elementary school didn't bring me inferiority because we were many that didn't know how to speak English, but inferiority came to me with full force when I got promoted to high school, where the students there were mostly children from rich homes. Although it's a Community school, which comprises a reasonable number of people of my kind, but those Rich kids, especially the girls, were so intimidating.

That was one of the largest contributors to why I was always shy around ladies, because how do you expect me to stage with those people who talk as if they've gone far ahead of me? The inferiority shaped me so badly that I stayed in the clique of people I could mingle with—the guys on the same level.

But on the contrary, I was not among the dullards in the class; I was very good in my test and exam scores even though I was not outspoken, which made me unhidden and also attracted a lot of scenes that caused me embarrassment.
The teachers, especially the Economics and Biology teachers, always want me to answer questions in their class because I was the top student in that subjects. I tried manoeuvring their calls several times, but they were just adamant; they kept calling, and you need to see how I used to massacre English when answering their questions

Away from school;
I also had one of the most awkward moments of my life when I was called to lead prayer in a Church with 300 people. I tried dodging the tasks, but the stubbornly spirited man of God refused. I cried and wished I could lead the prayer in our local dialect. In fact, who made it compulsory to lead prayer in English
I massacred English that day.

Thank God for where we are today

Thanks for reading.

LoL.. you see that prayer something, I can't forget my experience at a Sunday school service.. that day my crush was there . Ideally teachers don't point me to pray, I don't know what happened that day. you need to see how your guy was cutting and joining words😂

Hehehe, we all have gone through some moments that have made us feel low in life, I am just so glad that your vocabulary took a better shape afterwards, see who you are now.. bad things happen to make us better personalities.

I understand how it was for you back then, it's just the way our educational system was shaped which in turn shaped our society.
Only the rich kids could speak English and most knew nothing, not even "come" in their local dialects which was very important.

Thank God you advanced in age and knowledge as well. Thanks for sharing.

This issue of rich kids not being able to speak their dialect is a big disease. It sucks. Funny enough, a lot of the parents boast of it 😥

Thank you for stopping by dear

You speaks/writes so good and it got me Imagining and wondering....

Since people that speak/write very well have the chance of picking it from childhood which further tells that they are not good with their dialect...It seems you don't know your dialect too lol😂
