THE STRUGGLES THAT COME WITH JOB HUNTING

avatar

I recently went to a job interview and had to wait almost eight hours to get interviewed, the crazy thing about this was that it was a role that I didn’t care about but since it was recommended to me and I felt like I had high chances of getting the job, I went, sucked it up, and waited for my turn.

In that same interview, I met so many people with so many degrees that didn’t even come close to what we were applying for, there were doctors, engineers, accountants and guess what, they were all going for a marketing role.

It is appalling because this is sadly the norm in the Nigerian job market and with the high rate of unemployment people would gladly scramble and even fight to get a job that has nothing to do with what they studied just to earn a living.

Another struggle that I have experienced and am familiar with all too well is business owners and organizations using the high rate of unemployment as a reason to overwork and underpay their employees because in their head “there will always be someone willing to work”.

People have also taken the advantage to sell openings for jobs and even resulted to asking for sexual favors just to give people jobs, and it is crazy because this trend isn’t coming to an end anytime soon with the current inflation and state of the economy and as someone who is actively job searching, some of these things thoroughly disappoint me.

At this point, I have resulted that the best way to get jobs in Nigeria is by either making connections in certain organizations or making your curriculum vitae look like it was made by the gods, and even with these factors in place, it can still be very difficult.

In the end, I will advise everyone actively job-hunting to be creative and open-minded because while it isn’t easy and it comes with a lot of challenges, it is still very possible to get a good-paying job even with the economy as it is.

It is also essential while job hunting to figure out a way to get other streams of income because it could take some time to get something worth it with the amount of rubbish in the job market and a lot of finances are necessary to keep up the job hunt.

Job hunting in Nigeria is a daunting task. The labor market is in chaos and a total mess. Makes me wonder sometimes if my degree will really be worth it because I might just end up working in an industry that's totally different from my field of study

Your degree might not be worth it sadly especially if it isn't medical or very essential, sad truth.

This has become a norm and something I dislike a lot because you are been paid some business owners will won't you to move heaven and hell, to please them. It's really not fair.

They will want you to kill yourself just for the change they pay you.

Job hunting can be a daunting task indeed. You are right too about the importance of networking. More often than not, it isn't the best person for the job, but the most connected one.

People often forget how important networking is.

I already took my mind out of job hunting or even looking for one. Most male employers i come across make it clear that they want sex while the others try to play who they're not. Exhausting

Job hunting, as the name implies, is still hunting. And in hunting, you are exposed to different situations pledged at downgrading you. I like the part where you said,...to be open minded.. I do tell people its not compulsory you work in the same line as your course of study.
One of the best ways to get a job is by connections, in which LinkedIn is a very good platform.
Good piece you have altogether, @khaleesii

Your last paragraph was exactly what I was thinking...why not create a job. I don't know how easy it is to be entrepreneurial, but if people are so desperate for a job, there must be a service one could start to provide work for themselves. The Hive is nice for a side gig, but starting your own job is extremely useful for those you serve in these circumstances.

Well creating jobs isn't as easy because the economy and government make it pretty hard, there are so many laws and certain conditions that make it almost impossible.

Job hunting in Nigeria is not for the faint hearted I must say. It can be frustrating. How far with the PHCN offer? They haven't reached out yet?

They are setting us up indeed, people that said we should turn the cheek if we are slapped.

Yes, I have a few people in Lagos but I never liked the place.

Are you for real? Hahahaha they knew what they were doing. Wicked souls.

That's true. I never knew I could live here too because I was so comfortable with the way life was simple and easy in Ibadan. Lagos is challenging but one thing I love about it is that apart from the opportunities that exists, it keeps you on your toes to always give your best.

Hence I plan on coming, so many opportunities in Lagos, I am just trying to pray about it and not just run with it yet.

That's a smart thing to do... Let God guide your steps and once He gives the go ahead, you can be sure He has gone ahead of you. Makes it easier.

After my NYSC, I went for just one job interview and after that job interview, I dropped my CV and said NO to any form of offline Job. The funny thing was that the human Resource personnel blocked my employment. He told the company that the man who recommended me has a questionable character and as such my loyalty is questionable. Can you imagine such trash.
Meanwhile, the actual reason was the fact that he saw me as a threat to him due to my qualifications and age. Long story cut short, ever since then, I don't even know what my CV looks like and I don't have the intention of picking it up again. The digital world has allowed me to earn a living far above what I could earn offline with less stress.

@dreemport brought me here.

Another excellent post, and this one resonates with a lot of people in different countries that are facing the exact same dilemna @khaleesii.
One suggestion for your credit:

Sexual abuse for giving jobs is the worst of all. It is even below the level of beasts.

When unemployment increases, the wealthier take the benefit and pay very little. Humanity is asleep.

I hope you would get a job soon @khaleesii .

...and a lot of finances are necessary to keep up the job hunt.

You'll make fine hair, wear fine dress, still pay transport fare to somewhere that might be far. How can a broke person keep up? Job hunting is not for the faint-hearted in this country. Goodluck on your application.
