Corona critic?
If you have been having any form of radiostation, newspaper or television on over the last two or three weeks, it has been inevitable for you not hear about the corona virus. Or better detailed the 2019-nCoV or Wuhan strain of the corona virus, because the other coronas...yeah those are different. But anyhow: big news

This week the whole situation has been annoying me for a bit. Because as a person in healthcare, even we don’t have really any kind of information on what, how or how the situation is. And that is because I have the feeling that nobody really knows.
It is the good and the bad about the current times of the interwebs. On the one hand information that hasn’t seen daylight finally has options to come out, but on the other hand, are things sometimes exaggerated? Because when I see my former neighbor posting about this every second while she is still living on a remote island, I really have the feeling that the reliability about this information might be a little less accurate than when one of my friends who studies infectious diseases talks about this. But at the moment, nobody is really talking, or is talking too much. So what is reality then?

So yeah infections are indeed spreading across the world, but to me the question is more. What kind of infection is this really? Because yeah, what maybe 200 people have died from it? Well that happens with the flu every year, and more than anyone ever cares about. But now with this strain all panic is loose? But with what I tend to hear with this amount of infections (which I find not much), and the measures of cities in lockdown and temporary hospitals? It doesn’t add up to me!
So then the question rises, what is the truth in this one? And on that...I think the answer isn’t clear at all as yet. Too fast of developments, not good enough communication between country, and the people either having the option to spread the panic too much, or government still having the option to swipe it under the rug to prevent panic. The truth will be in the middle somewhere.
So while putting on S09 of the Walking dead (which wasn’t available in Switzerland even with VPN, first world problems ya know!) my mind always starts to wonder what will happen when such a threat would actually go through. Anarchy as I saw after the hurricane with everyone thinking only about their own asses.
Will the disaster preppers be the only ones who were right in the end? Well what I see since I got back in Holland….it is more crowded than ever. Which is still nothing compared to how loads of Asian cities are coping with their population problem, so where this is heading over the next couple of weeks?

here things might getting a bit worse, I am working on hospitality industry now, in which rely on tourist to come, while China is one big market for Bali. I can feel the fear even myself afraid that it will spread here.
But what circulating in the media, and internet, make me hate this fast inovation, while people still need to adapt and strain those news, which even myself not sure which one is true.
the problem is that Anti Chinese movement and sentiment even make things worse, with several facebook page spreading news which we can't verify. from those page people are sharing and spreading it like crazy.
Exactly. It is so challenging to verify that I really do not know what to believe at this time. I understand your worries as being reliant on tourism
Yeah exactly my thoughts:
Here in the Netherlands in 2018/19 2900 people probably died from the flu, while 400000 infected here in the Netherlands alone... ( see screenshot from the Dutch ministry of health, below)
No panic on that one..
No locked cities, nothing.
In the news I see experts stating that this corona is less harmfull than Sars or Mers. The amount of infected people is minimal compared to the population of China, spreading rather quick indeed, but still minimal.
So why the panic?
The measures taken seem to be totally out of proportion, generating a worldwide panic as if this is as dangerous as the plague in the middle ages.
This gives thought that the authorities might know more than they tell us, many people will start to think...
A couple of days later and I am still not sure what to think haha. Either stuff is disappearing under the carpet or mass hysteria is created ...hmmmm
It's like Y2K: the mass panic is what keeps it from turning into a huge disaster. After SARS and Ebola were contained quickly, I expect we'll never see a pandemic like the 1918 Spanish flu again.
Today, information travels faster around the world than a virus. Although we're not sure how lethal this coronavirus is, its RNA has already been sequenced.
Exactly that is the thing. We dont know what is going on and I am having a super hard time on defining on what is true and what is not. Hmmm
