The year has been difficult and Christmas has burst in when his economic possibilities have been limited, however in a superhuman effort he has achieved that on this day his two children have gifts under the tree, which are not the ones they asked for, but his wife managed to change their initial requests, which are beyond the reach of his economy, a talking doll and a car racing track.
Dinner also awaits him at the table, not as splendid as in previous years, but the salad, ham bread, hallacas and pernil (pork leg) adorn it.
It is already past eleven o'clock at night when he finishes his work in the office.
Down to the parking lot.
Everything is lonely, he feels as if he is the only inhabitant on the planet.
Unfortunately, the car does not start, the battery is discharged.
Take a deep breath and go outside.
He will wait for a cab, if it arrives, or spend Christmas there.
After several minutes of uncertainty, one appears.
He does not sit in the back seat as is customary for those who use this service, but in the seat next to the driver.
-You saved my life.
The driver laughs.
-It's no big deal.
He is about forty years old, with a foreign accent.
He gives her the address and since it is far away he comments.
-I hope we can make it in time for dinner.
-There is a time for everything in life. -He answers her.
They engage in friendly conversation.
He learns that he is alone in the city, that his family lives in another country and that he hopes to earn enough money to bring them over.
He is a professional but has not been able to obtain employment in her field.
-And where will you dine?
-I've already had dinner in my room, I'll be working until morning.
He tells him about the situation and the improvised gifts and the driver comments on how magical Christmas is and the miracles and surprises it brings.
In the end he invites him to have dinner with them.
He refuses but at her insistence ends up accepting.
They arrive ten minutes before midnight and his wife looks at him strangely at the unknown guest.
He takes her to the kitchen and tells her:
-I'll explain later, put one more plate on the table.
While dinner is being served, the children, with their ingenuity, bombard the man with questions and he enjoys telling them Christmas stories.
At dinner time everyone makes a wish out loud and the guest instead of making a wish for their family makes a wish for them.
-For everyone to have what they want for these days and beyond.
They eat in silence and when they finish he apologizes.
-Thank you, you have been very kind, but I must continue working.
He leaves and when the children arrive to open the presents under the tree they get instead of one for each of them, two.
He looks quizzically at his wife.
When they open them all are surprised.
The extra gifts are the doll and the track they had asked for.
