I had been planning a family trip to the Aquarium for some time because my little girl was anxious to go and meet the dolphins. So we didn't keep putting it off and on the weekend we decided to visit the place. The experience was delightful (and my little girl got to meet something more than just dolphins!) and here I share it with you.

The National Aquarium of Cuba was founded 63 years ago and its purpose is not only recreation, but it is also a scientific institution with the purpose of educating and instructing in the care of the environment and the marine ecosystem. It is located on 1st and 60th Avenues in the Municipality of Playa, Havana, Cuba, very close to the northern coast of the city, so as soon as we approach it, the first thing we feel is the pleasant and unmistakable smell of the sea.🌊

The National Aquarium is a very nice place, I have been visiting it since I was a little girl, I remember my grandmother lived relatively close and during school vacations she used to take my cousin and me to visit the place. When my eldest son was little I used to bring him quite regularly, and now to my little girl, so being here brings back very fond memories.❤️

Right in front of the main entrance there is a set of sculptures of its emblematic dolphins, symbols of the institution and the protagonists of the show that most attracts children and the general public. These sculptures are ideal for taking pictures, the children are very attracted to them and always want to touch them, and of course my daughter is no exception jeje.

The first thing we see when we cross the entrance gate is " The Tropical Island", a beautiful circular pond that represents the coastal area of a Caribbean island and its vegetation, where we can enjoy several specimens of magnificent sea turtles. Watching these peaceful turtles swimming very slowly underwater is very relaxing and gave me a sense of calm, so I spent a long time watching them. Something absolutely amazing about these marine reptiles is that they can stay underwater for several hours without breathing. Incredible!🐢

To the right of this pond we can walk across a small wooden bridge that crosses an abundant vegetation that represents the mangroves of our coasts.

On the way out of this authentic space of our coastal vegetation my little girl had an encounter with a sea lions that scared her very much. When we left the Mangrove we found a pond where there were two of these magnificent animals swimming very placidly, but when we approached one of them apparently got upset when he saw us, or maybe he came out to greet us I don't know; and he came out of the water quite quickly in our direction and began to growl very loudly. My girl when she heard such a scolding (or greeting...) got scared and ran out crying. Luckily there was a net separating the space between us and the animals, otherwise I would have run away scared too! I have read that these mammals are very intelligent and friendly so I am going to assume that he was just welcoming us in his own way. At the Aquarium there is also a show dedicated to sea lions, but at the time it was not being performed.

After this traumatic experience between Maria Claudia (my little girl) and the sea lions I had to calm her down and I took her to a small amusement park where, despite the strong sun, the children were having a great time. In this place we also found several cafeterias with a great diversity of offers and prices. All of them very tasty.🎡

Another attraction of the National Aquarium is the set of fish tanks in which different specimens of our fauna and marine landscapes are exhibited, representing the natural habitat of the species on display.🐠

Something I really like about this place is that we always have the view of the sea. At the end of the installation we come across the beautiful vision of our coast, and it is absolutely pleasant to spend a few minutes enjoying the smell of salt and the immensity of its blue. The downside of this proximity is when the cyclonic season arrives. When there is a hurricane nearby, the sea usually penetrates and can endanger the lives of the animals. That is why the workers and biologists of the aquarium are always alert to these phenomenons.

And the best part comes last. The dolphin attraction! 🐬
This show takes place in "La Place of the Dolphins" a space that was remodeled and expanded a few years ago, to accommodate a larger number of spectators since this is the show that has more public concurrence and is the favorite of children. My little girl was excited as well as her dad and I since it had been a long time since we had enjoyed the dolphins' performance. This act is very beautiful and transmits a lot of joy.

Seven female dolphins of the bottlenose dolphin species, which is the most abundant in Cuban waters, participated in the show. These beautiful specimens varied in size and age, the oldest was twenty-two years old and the youngest was seven years old. An additional fact for lovers of these marine mammals: Dolphins usually live up to about 40 years of age approximately, although curiously enough, those in captivity usually live a little longer.

The show is entertaining, has music and applause, and is very interactive. The audience participates in the spectacle with the dolphins with the final prize of being able to pet them and take pictures with these beautiful animals. It's all great fun, the dolphins dance with their trainers, play ball balancing and even sing. And the most beautiful part is when they do their big jumps in the air and the audience is thrilled! These are amazing animals that never cease to amaze me with their charisma and intelligence. My little girl finally got to meet them, and it was what she liked the most of the whole Aquarium. It was an unforgettable experience especially for her.

And with this luxurious closing we concluded our visit, we left a little tired but very satisfied with the trip and everything we experienced in the place. Of course we are already planning to return another time. I hope you enjoyed this publication as much as I did. 😃

Hacía tiempo llevaba planeando un paseo en familia al Acuario porque mi niña estaba ansiosa por ir a conocer a los delfines. Así que no lo seguimos aplazando y el fin de semana decidimos ir a visitar el lugar. La experiencia fue encantadora (¡y mi pequeña conoció algo más que delfines!) y aquí la comparto.

El Acuario Nacional de Cuba lleva 63 años de creado y su propósito no es solamente la recreación, sino que además es una institución científica con el fin de educar e instruir en el cuidado del medio ambiente y el ecosistema marino. Está ubicado en las avenidas 1ra y 60 del Municipio Playa, en La Habana, Cuba, muy cercano a la costa norte de la ciudad, por lo que desde que vamos acercándonos lo primero que sentimos es el agradable e inconfundible olor del mar. 🌊

El Acuario Nacional es un sitio muy bonito, yo lo visito desde pequeña, recuerdo que mi abuela vivía relativamente cerca y en la época de las vacaciones escolares nos llevaba a mi prima y a mí a recorrer el lugar. Cuando mi hijo mayor era pequeño yo solía traerlo con bastante regularidad, y ahora a mi niña, así que estar aquí me trae muy gratos recuerdos. ❤️

Justo frente a su entrada principal hay un conjunto de las esculturas de sus emblemáticos delfines, símbolos de la institución y los protagonistas del espectáculo que más atrae a los niños y al público en general. Estas esculturas son ideales para tomarse fotografías, a los niños les llaman mucho la atención y siempre quieren tocarlas, y claro mi hija no es la excepción jeje

Lo primero que vemos al cruzar la puerta de entrada es “La Isla Tropical”, un hermoso estanque circular que representa la zona costera de una isla del caribe y de su vegetación, donde podemos disfrutar de varios ejemplares de magníficas tortugas marinas. Observar estas tranquilas tortugas nadando muy pausadas bajo el agua es muy relajante y me transmitió mucha calma, por lo que estuve un buen rato observándolas. Algo absolutamente asombroso sobre estos reptiles marinos es que pueden estar sin respirar bajo el agua varias horas. ¡Increíble!🐢

A la derecha de este estanque podemos caminar a través de un pequeño puente de madera el que atraviesa una abundante vegetación que representa a los manglares de nuestras costas.

A la salida de este auténtico espacio de nuestra vegetación costera mi niña tuvo un encuentro con un lobo marino que la asustó muchísimo. Al salir del Manglar nos encontramos con un estanque donde había dos de estos magníficos animales nadando muy plácidamente, pero al acercarnos nosotras uno de ellos al parecer se molestó cuando nos vio, o quizá salió a saludarnos no lo sé; y salió del agua con bastante rapidez en dirección nuestra y empezó a gruñir muy fuerte. Mi niña al escuchar tal regaño (o saludo...) se espantó y salió corriendo y llorando. Por suerte había una malla que separaba el espacio entre nosotros y los animales ¡porque si no yo también hubiera salido corriendo asustada! He leído que estos mamíferos son muy inteligentes y simpáticos así que voy a asumir que solo nos estaba dando la Bienvenida a su manera. En el Acuario también existe un espectáculo dedicado a los lobos marinos, pero en ese momento no se estaba realizando.

Después de esta experiencia traumática entre Maria Claudia (mi pequeña) y el lobo marino tuve que calmarla y me la llevé hacia un pequeño parque de atracciones donde a pesar del sol tan fuerte que hacia los niños estaban pasando un rato muy divertido. En este sitio encontramos también varias cafeterías con una gran diversidad de ofertas y precios. Todas muy sabrosas.🎡

Otra de las atracciones del Acuario Nacional son el conjunto de peceras en las que se exponen diferentes ejemplares de nuestra fauna y paisajes marinos los cuales representan el hábitat natural de las especies en exhibición.🐠

Algo que me gusta mucho de este lugar es que siempre tenemos la vista del mar. Al final de la instalación nos topamos con la hermosa visión de nuestra costa, y es absolutamente placentero pasar unos minutos disfrutando del olor a sal y de la inmensidad de su azul. Lo malo de esta cercanía es cuando llega la temporada ciclónica. Cuando hay algún huracán cerca el mar suele penetrar y puede llegar a poner en riesgo la vida de los animales. Por lo que los trabajadores y biólogos del acuario están siempre alertas ante estos fenómenos.

Y la mejor parte queda para el final. ¡La atracción de los delfines! 🐬
Esta función se realiza en "La Plaza de los Delfines" un espacio que fue remodelado y ampliado hace unos años atrás, para poder albergar un mayor número de espectadores ya que este es el espectáculo que más concurrencia de público tiene y es el preferido de los niños. Mi niña estaba emocionada al igual que su papá y yo ya que hacía mucho tiempo que no disfrutábamos de la actuación de los delfines. Este acto es muy bonito y transmite mucha alegría.

En el show participaban siete delfines hembra, de la especie nariz de botella que es la que abunda en las aguas de Cuba. Estos bellos ejemplares variaban en cuanto a tamaño y edad, la mayor tenía veintidós años y la menor siete. Un dato adicional para los amantes de estos mamíferos marinos: los delfines suelen vivir aproximadamente hasta los 40 años aproximadamente, aunque curiosamente los que se encuentran en cautiverio suelen vivir un poco más.

El espectáculo es ameno, tiene música y aplausos, y es muy interactivo. El público participa de la función con los delfines con el premio final de poder acariciarlos y tomarse fotos con estos bellos animales. Todo es muy divertido, los delfines bailan con sus entrenadoras, hacen equilibrio con pelota y hasta cantan ¡Y lo más bonito es cuando hacen sus grandes saltos en el aire y el público se emociona! Estos son animales sorprendentes que nunca dejan de asombrarme por su carisma e inteligencia. Mi niña finalmente los pudo conocer, y fue lo que más le gustó de todo el Acuario. Fue una experiencia inolvidable sobre todo para ella.

Y con este cierre de lujo concluimos nuestra visita, nos fuimos algo cansados pero muy satisfechos con el viaje y todo lo vivido en el lugar. Por supuesto ya estamos planificando regresar en otra ocasión. Espero hayan disfrutado de esta publicación tanto como lo hice yo. 😃
