Gender discrimination or preference: your opinion counts

source

Gender is a sensitive topic that society cannot run away from, despite its delicacy. In simple terms, gender distinguishes humanity based on sex into male and female. Gender discrimination thus means the unfair or unequal treatment of one individual over another on the basis of sexual preference, which in most cases leads to an unfair advantage for one gender in comparison with the other. Gender discrimination thus comes into play between a male and a female and not between a male and a male or a female and a female.

In Africa, especially in Nigeria, it is not uncommon to have unfair treatment of one gender with respect to the other. My discussion will come from the male gender perspective since I am a male; however, there are no ill-feelings intended for the female gender whatsoever.

I am tempted to have a brief talk on the much-controversial discussion of gender equality. Perhaps we can say that the opposite of gender discrimination is gender equality. I can comfortably use, in context, "gender inequality" as a less harsh phrase to replace gender discrimination; however, both can and will be used interchangeably.

Gender discrimination needs to be considered in two phases: positive gender discrimination and negative gender discrimination. I know you may want to think that the discrimination does not need to be made to look less obvious as it is. If you consider the female gender in terms of strength and endurance, you may wish to agree with me that consideration should be given to the female gender. This scenario is gender discrimination; however, it is considered positive in that the female gender may not be able to endure as much as the male gender.

This would then bring me to state some controversies on gender discrimination, and, as earlier stated, my words are not ill-intentioned. The gender equality being advocated for can better be reviewed as "gender inclusion," which to me would better fit the struggle of the female gender. The man in the story of creation was formed to dominate and be helped by the woman. It will thus be more proper to say the female gender should be more inclusive in day-to-day living. There are tasks for which, by virtue of strength and endurance, the male gender is better fit due to muscle mass distribution, while the female is perceived to have more fat distributions and, by hormones, may not have in substantial quantity what it’ll take to go the extra mile.

Gender equality was accentuated because of excessive neglect of the female gender in respect of benefits from society, such as political appointments; perhaps this was the breeder of feminism.

To answer the prompt by hivelearners, I have been a victim of gender discrimination several times, both in a positive and negative way. Some of the scenarios were understandable since they required consideration for the female gender, but a couple of times they were negative because the impact of the consideration cost me more than it should. Have you seen a job advertisement that specifically requested the female gender when it was obvious the male gender could equally deliver?

Recently, I conducted an interview for a colleague who needed the services of sales representatives at his new private establishment. He specifically told me I should give consideration to women, especially those who are beautiful. His intention was obvious; he wanted to attract more customers. That was his strategy; however, would you consider that a gender preference or gender inequality? The argument may be for the former; however, the gender inequality lies in the preference, for whatever reason.

Very recently, a female colleague of mine was asked to be excused from some official assignments that required traveling to some distant locations with terrible terrain and risks, and we had to sleep over on some occasions. We were all remunerated for the assignment, but we, the males, were asked to be considerate of the female among us. Would that not be a form of gender preference or inequality? Well, the outcome of that was that we, the males, conducted the assignment, and personally, I had no ill-feelings as I considered it reasonable not to endanger her and lessen her exposure to the stress of the journey.

For me as an individual, I have always been of the opinion that there are some assignments meant for the male gender, and I do not hesitate to do what is required. My offense comes when the consideration is masked with a right or arrogance; then, I stay open for "gender equality".

As an individual, I would preferably advocate for gender inclusiveness rather than opt for gender equality. Gender discrimination in all its forms cannot be eliminated, but it can be ameliorated by advocating for gender inclusiveness.

Thank you for reading. I would love to have your comments and contributions. 🤗

Like I team don't understand most of the times....it makes it look like the males are the ones adapted to suffering and it saddens my soul

Well, gender inclusiveness is quite a good approach towards ending gender inequality I think

Well, when it's hard, it's the males, when it's soft and rosy, it's the females yet, those championing the gender equality are the females.

Inclusiveness would go a long way to satiate the aggrieved gender

I think so but I also think the notion that men are immuned to difficulties and sufferings should be reduced already 🤧

Well, men and women see men as superheros. It's high time we do that gender inclusiveness 😂

We all know that gender discrimination can not be wiped out of this country but still no matter what we all deserve a chance to try
Though in terms of strength men comes first but in terms of endurance female never last so for that reason we all deserve to be treated equal in life.

Gender discrimination has come to stay and I doubt if anything can be done about it in Nigeria
However, gender inclusiveness sounds great only if it can be implemented
I have tasted both the negative and positive side of being a female (gender discrimination is real)

What is popularly called discrimination is the preference that is not favourable. In some cases, a favourable preference is not considered as gender discrimination. I have seen where females are exempted from some task because it is believed that they don't have the energy. This is not usually condemned. An unfavourable preference comes with condemnation. I love your approach of gender inclusiveness rather than equality.

You are right it's in two ways. We can't look at it from one angle. Gender inclusiveness will be the best way to go about it.

I don't know if I should agree with your ideology on preference. It seems reasonable, so I will take it to note

I had to think a couple of times about your topic.

I like the idea of gender inclusiveness. However, I would tend to shy away from your statement that women are smaller and weaker. On the whole that is certainly a true statement women do tend to be smaller and weaker than men. However, I've met some large, strong, and very intimidating women....one my my son's dates recently comes to mind.

I believe that each person should be treated as an individual with their own strengths, weaknesses, abilities and inabilities. Try to include everyone regardless of sex based on those. Sure your boss may want a "beauitful" woman to bring in more customers. However, a handsome, charismatic, and outgoing man may do just as good a job...if not better. Fill the role with the most capable person.

As for the wife being created as a helper for man. You are absolutely correct that the bible does mention that in the beginning.

However, for her being subservient... May I suggest you take a look at Proverbs 31:10-31.

I'll add special attention to this portion:

Proverbs 31:17:

"She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks."

The Bible doesn't mention her weakness but rather her strength. The rest of the verses show her ingenuity, community mindedness, hard work, virtue, and independence in work, purchases and such.

Another verse that I like is this one:

Proverbs 12:4:

"A wife of noble character is her husband's crown,
but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones."

A good wife will be your prize possession and make you a king (a king needs his crown, right?) but choose the wife poorly and well, you will regret the day you were born.

Just my two thoughts.

Thanks for writing 😊

Option 1: i wont say it is cause your friend mindset is all about business, if beautiful ladies is gonna attract more customers and bring in more money to the table than male then he isnt discriminating at all . Business is business and should not be considered the other way around

Option 2: Well this too i wont consider it is cause female are more valuable and soft if male are there to assist the female why stress herself or if she were to be your girlfriend wont you gladly do the job with all seriousness 😉😉

Hmmmm

And if there's male that could actually deliver especially with more dedication and vigor?

One thing I've come to realize us that there would always be gender inequality in the world we live in today. Always.

It is a controversial subject and I am sorry that in Nigeria it is so evident. I believe that feeling discriminated against begins with the acceptance of who you are and what you can or cannot do. When you have a good perception of yourself and you accept yourself as you are, you may suffer discrimination, but you will know how to handle it, as long as it does not escalate into situations of aggression or violence.

I think that women are as strong and capable as any man, but always within their own limits as a woman. I have had to share with women, who, just as they are capable of carrying boxes, are also too women to look beautiful and fragile. And that makes them even more beautiful and special.

Thank you for your wise input. You're correct about self perception but I may not totally agree with you when comparing the PO physical strength of a male and female
