This is my entry for The Ink Well Prompt #49: By the light of the moon

Silence reigned in the meadow. A cool breeze ran through the bushes and reeds, rustling between their pointed ears. The ground beneath their paws was warm. Hank slipped through the grass and lay on his back on the ground. He enjoyed feeling the clods of dirt seep through his fur. Nothing like taking a dirt bath to hide his scent.

Satisfied, he shook his whole body and glanced at his companion.

Tom paused to sniff the cold air. His powerful nostrils could detect any prey from a mile away.

A wolverine wasn't far behind, a small rabbit and some rodents too; there were other predators in the area but nothing to worry about.

"The moon is beautiful tonight," he blurted out returning his gaze to his companion.

A row of teeth reciprocated his sentence

It was a calm night, the moon's clarity witnessed both metamorphoses, increasing their cravings to satisfy their appetite and be one with nature.

"Nothing like the clarity of the full moon to bring my desire to sink my fangs into fresh meat to a boil," Hank noted, licking his maw over and over again.

It was nice to hunt in pairs.

A sweeter smell caught Hank's attention, perhaps it was the delicious meat of a pig, he sniffed again to make sure. It was sweeter than a pig, its smell was more delicate and tender.

For a moment, Tom thought it might go unnoticed, but Hank hadn't missed it.

"Stop," Tom warned offhand, overriding Hank's impulses.

Hank ignored Tom's warnings and took off like a bullet after his prey. His shadow zigzagged gracefully through the brush, his light footsteps dodged the bushes and dry leaves on the path and without a sound, he stopped a few feet from his target to assess the situation.

There she was, her prey was an innocent young girl, she appeared to be no more than 15 years old. Mesmerized by the device in her hands, she wandered distractedly. Her bare legs gave off ambrosia of fragrances that made it difficult to contain himself. There were no other humans besides her, the opportunity was perfect.

His mouth was watering

"You know we're not supposed to eat humans," Tom whispered in Hank's ear.

Hank never ceased to be amazed by Tom and his ability to go unnoticed. His prey would never hear him coming until it was too late.

"No one will miss her," Hank reproached.

"What's a young woman doing in the middle of the night alone?"

"Most likely a mountain lion or other predator will get her."

"And then we'll have missed our chance to taste how juicy her flesh is."

Hank savored again and again as he imagined how tender her meat would be, however, it wasn't long before he felt Tom's eyes drilling into the back of his neck.

"We are Apex predators," he emphasized defensively.

"We're above the food chain, we're unmatched. We're faster, stronger, quicker. They are our food too."

Tom was still saying nothing

"Damn it!" yelled Hank.

"You win," Hank pointed out; he let the air out of his lungs giving up, "tomorrow I'll go visit the old woman who lives deep in the woods, I'm sure no one will miss her. I know she won't be as appetizing as this little creature, but you know the saying, Tom"

He paused and his big snout drew a smile.

"Old hen always makes good broth," he chuckled under his breath.

Tom tilted his head and furrowed brow

"I mean the grandmother of the girl in the red hood."

Tom raised his eyebrows

"Just be cautious," he warned.

"I'll be doing her pathetic existence a favor" Hank replied, returning a smile full of pointy teeth.

"I'll go get the wolverine," he blurted out reluctantly before disappearing into the bushes again.

[...]

The girl innocently kept flipping through her smartphone.

"Nice try, Agent Van Helsing," Tom's deep voice replied from the safety of the shadows.

"You take care of yours, I'll take care of mine," replied a not-so-innocent girl.

See you next time...
