Son varios los indicios que se toman a la hora de decidir dónde ir a hacer la cola. El primero es que esté descargando una gandola de combustible, eso garantiza un mayor número de vehículos atendidos. También se toma en cuenta la extensión. Incorporarse a una donde haya más de doscientos carros en espera, casi siempre se traduce en una pérdida de tiempo.

Pero siempre se va a la aventura, no hay ninguna seguridad de que al hacer la interminable cola pueda surtirse de combustible. Son muchas las variables que intervienen en esa lotería, desde la cantidad de litros que realmente se descargaron, hasta el volumen que los funcionarios hayan decidido dejar “en reserva” para atender los “carros de apoyo”, un eufemismo que encubre el gran negocio de vender el combustible con un sobre precio significativo.

En mi ciudad, Maracay, la escasez de combustible llega a tener características dramáticas. Una situación que por supuesto no afecta a todas las personas por igual.

Hay quienes nunca hacen cola, bien sea porque pertenecen a los grupos cercanos al poder y son surtidos en horarios especiales, cuando nadie está pendiente de dejar testimonio de la irregularidad.

Otros, tienen el poder adquisitivo suficiente para pagar la gasolina enviada por delivery a las puertas de sus casas. En estos casos deben pagar un sobreprecio que supera ampliamente al cien por ciento del costo.

Pero a la gran mayoría solo nos queda la opción de hacer largas y extenuantes colas, que con un poco de suerte pueden ser de un promedio de seis horas, esto para el caso de la gasolina pagada a precio internacional, la que se compra solamente desembolsando billetes de dólares americanos. Existe otra gasolina que es regalada, ya que su precio es tan ínfimo que llenar el tanque del vehículo sale más barato que comprar un banano. Para esta última la espera puede prolongarse por semanas.

Para distraer el tiempo lo que más se hace es hablar con los compañeros de infortunio. Allí nos conocemos. La mayoría comparte vivencias parecidas, relacionadas con las peripecias que hay que hacer para resolver el día a día en Venezuela.

Cada quien se las ingenia para no amargarse más de la cuenta en esta espera inútil. Yo por ejemplo, siempre ando con una libreta y un lápiz, tomando notas, anotando impresiones. Muchas de esas ideas me han servido luego como estímulo para escribir alguna reflexión.

Otra de las cosas que siempre hago es tomar fotografías, principalmente para mí, para asistir la memoria cuando se niegue a recordar estos tiempos extraños en que me ha tocado vivir. Y no deja de ser paradójico que esta gran escasez de combustible ocurra en el país con las mayores reservas de petróleo del mundo. El que en el pasado tuvo el mérito de ser de los mayores exportadores del planeta. Pero como diría un desaparecido periodista venezolano: “Así son las cosas”

Esta semana la suerte me sonrió. Luego de casi siete horas conseguí veintiséis litros de combustible, por ellos pagué quince dólares americanos. El precio en realidad era de trece porque es a medio dólar por litro. Sin embargo, también ocurre eso, que no hay billetes menudos para dar el vuelto, así que siempre se deja algo que no se consumió. También tuve suerte con el clima, estuvo bueno, y me permitió tomar algunas fotos para compartir con los amigos que lleguen a esta publicación.

In my city, Maracay, fuel shortages are becoming dramatic. A situation that of course does not affect all people equally.

There are those who never queue, either because they belong to groups close to power and are supplied at special times, when no one is aware of the irregularity.

Others have enough purchasing power to pay for gasoline delivered to their homes. In these cases, they must pay a surcharge that is well over one hundred percent of the cost.

But the vast majority of us are left with the option of standing in long and exhausting lines, which with a little luck can be an average of six hours, this in the case of gasoline paid at international prices, which can only be purchased by paying U.S. dollar bills. There is another type of gasoline that is given away for free, since its price is so low that filling a tank of gas is cheaper than buying a banana. For the latter, the wait can last for weeks.

To distract the time, the most common thing to do is to talk to fellow sufferers. There we get to know each other. Most of them share similar experiences, related to the vicissitudes that have to be done to solve the day to day life in Venezuela.

Everyone manages to avoid becoming more bitter than usual in this useless wait. I, for example, always walk around with a notebook and a pencil, taking notes, writing down impressions. Many of these ideas have served me later as a stimulus to write some reflections.

Another thing I always do is to take photographs, mainly for myself, to help my memory when it refuses to remember these strange times in which I live. And they are so strange that this great fuel shortage is being experienced in the country with the largest quantities of oil buried in its subsoil. One that in the past had the merit of being one of the largest exporters in the world. But, as a late Venezuelan journalist would say: "That's the way things are".

This week luck smiled on me. After almost seven hours I got twenty-six liters of fuel, for which I paid fifteen US dollars. The price was actually thirteen because it is half a dollar per liter. However, that also happens, there are no small bills to give change, so you always leave something that was not consumed. I was also lucky with the weather, it was nice, and allowed me to take some pictures to share with friends who come to this publication.
