Your friend is ready to be used. So, I don't see any problem in this case, and the lady already made it clear from the beginning. I think your friend just wants to wait till the lady chooses him as the last option, I guess. If he loves someone, how can he choose to see her as a friend? At least it's not possible for a normal person or have a robotic mindset like me.
