Y A R L // Sri Lankan Cuisine

Knowing that it was the only day left in the week of me not having part-time tutoring job, plus our commitment to at least spend time together once a week, my husband and I decided to have couple dinner out. Thank God for mother-in-law who is ever willing to take care of the boys for a couple of hours. We decided to have Sri Lankan food. Let's!

Y A R L

Location: 8, Jalan Kerja Air Lama 1, Ukay Heights, 68000 Ampang, Selangor.

Yarl restaurant already branches out to few location. And we are glad that there is one nearby. It serves really authentic Northern Sri Lankan cuisine. It is also famous for its Sri Lankan crabs, but let's keep that for another occasion when thw budget is not so tight.

Ambience

I really love the warmth ambience here. Tranquil — with no music background whatsoever. One could hear the sound of fan as well as when the coffee was brewed. Even the sound of cooking from the kitchen behind.

The tables and chairs were neatly arranged and if you are into art, you would love to explore all the art frames here, with QR code for more details of those pieces. The waiters were helpful, attentive and friendly too.

Food we ordered

Sweet Appam

As appetizer, I was craving for something sweet, the waiter recommended this. A bowl-shaped pancake appam made of fermented rice flour batter, with coconut milk added, as well as a drizzle of brown sugar. Very very great appetizer! We ordered only one to be shared because I was cutting down sugar.

Yarl Thali Set

We came here for their dinner set and we chose this, highly recommended by the waiter too. It came with three vegetables of the day, a rasam soup and a pickled. The vegetables were chickpeas, French beans and pumpkin-brinjal. All were perfectly cooked with their spices. The rasam was so savoury sourish appetizing. The pickled was extremely strong taste, not to my liking, but my husband loved it.

Masala Thosai

I was craving for thosai too, a type of crepe made from fermented batter. Theirs was so nicely done. Loved it. It came with three savoury dipping sauce, also on point. The tomato curry, sambar and the chutney. Without these three, the thosai itself with the potatoes filling was great enough. With the three sauces, I was in cloud 9.

Mutton Varuval

This goar curry was so delicious. A bit spicy for me but super kicked. The meat was so soft I bet it was cooked for hours. And the complex flavor of herb and spices was super flavorful and appetizing. This paired really well with the Yarl Thali Dinner Set. It awakened all my senses. Haha.

Yarl Tea and Bru Coffee Tarik

Husband ordered Yarl Tea because he loved the combination of ceylon tea with creamer. I asked for coffee not using goat's for fresh cow's milk, so the waiter recommended me Bru Coffee Tarik which used condensed milk. A bit too sweet to my liking but still satisfying.

After hours of catching up, talking about future, finance, family, and miscellaneous topic, we ordered another two cups of pulled milk tea. We loved slow evening like this, plus it was really quiet and cozy at Yarl. I saw another guy sitting there from the time we came till now just with coffee and his laptop. To my husband, cheers to many years of laying down life for one another. Love you!

Bon Appetit!
