Have you tried 'Gula Apong' ice cream?🍦/ Borneo Ice Cream

I almost forgot about the existence of 'Gula Apong' as I had not seen it in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for years. Until recently, we spotted 'Gula Apong' ice creams emerging one by one.

Being a Sarawakian (because I grew up at Sarawak although my identity I am not a Sarawakian), I am a fan of 'Gula Apong'. 'Gula Apong' is a Sarawak special sugar taken from nipa palm tree, collected from a cut of the flower bud. It is usually golden brown caramel colour or even darker brown depends on the duration of the boiling process.

I was stoked when one of my friends told me about this shop, which is just nearby where I stay. Initially, I passed by it many rounds but due to not a fan of ice cream, I usually skipped. Only after my friend mentioned to me they specialise on everything 'gula apong', my heart synchronised. Yuhoo.

Q Ice Cream

So, coincidentally, the boys' Grandma wanted to give us a treat in conjuction to Jansen's birthday. We planned and arranged and happy to be able to set a date!

Once arrived, I saw this poster right at the entrance, their coffee series. But, I just had my coffee, so I skipped the coffee series although my eyes couldn't not gazing at it. Oh well, next time.

We went in and was really surprised by the ambience. From the outside, you would not think that inside was so spacious, cozy, tidy and neat. Properly air-conditioned too. We were the only customers there and the boys treated the place like theirs.

A small bar and one worker at this section. And he politely attended to us.

This was how the menu look like.

Indeed, it was all things 'Gula Apong'. Looks at those big sundae of ice cream. My main attention was the gula apong. Haha.

The one who attended to us told us the price. Small Gula Apong ice cream for RM4, and big one for RM8. And each would be given two toppings for free.
That was so, so cheap!!! I wondered would they earn?

The toppings choices were cereal, cornflakes, peanut crushed, chocolate rice and mini coco crunch.

Then I saw the menu for coffee again, successfully resisted haha.

While waiting for the ice cream to be served, the boys explored and chose to seat at the bigger chairs with sofa section.

Myself, husband and mother-in-law seat at usual wooden table and chair section.

Myself and husband chose chocolate rice and peanut crushed for our toppings. Husband felt adventurous so he picked large ice cream. I would go for small.

Our ice cream!

The eldest son chose chocolate rice and cornflakes, the youngest son chose chocolate rice and coco crunch.

Their ice cream

After eating our ice creams, the boys had fun just chatting and playing. They loved to do silly things too which I captured below. I told them I was going to post at Hive, they were alright with it.

Thank you to their Grandma who gave us this treat. She kept on asked me to buy a cup of coffee knowing I loved because she said the bill was not expensive at all. I told her we shall date next round.

I really love the taste of the 'Gula Apong' ice cream. It was smooth and creamy, just enough sweetness from the Sarawak sugar, and won't feel too sweet until you gonna get diabetes type. Just the type of ice cream I like. I read that Gula Apong is healthy choice of sugar because it has its own minerals our bodies need.
