RE: LeoFinance Engagement | I Just Sent Out 1400 LEO to Everyone Who Beat Me Last Week

You are viewing a single comment's thread:

I'm at work for a few more hours. I'll come back with a better comment later, just wanted to say thanks for the LEO.

I'm also going to create a weekly competition for evergreen content. That is, every week I will send 100 LEO to the top ranking post in terms of external traffic that it generates.

I like the idea, but counting year old content makes it difficult for new content to beat the traffic older content generates due to the current position it has.

I have some input and I'll share my view in a couple of hours.

Love the initiative to reward optimized content.

Yes let me know!

New content does still hit their normal 7 day window of rewards. I wonder what the dynamic would look like as old content can ebb and flow with new content rewards

What I meant was that we currently have 2 articles driving ~100 visitors per month while the third top post generates like 40 or something.

Rewarding the top article each week would basically be like giving one of the two authors LEO for several weeks or even months without much competition due to the current rankings.

And it makes us all want to write for those coveted spots.

Its like writing a book and getting on a bestseller list - worth the salt and tears.

I can totally understand that, but I honestly don't think it actually works like that. Some people, perhaps like you, might be eager to jump in and compete for the awesome prize, but how are you going to compete with an article that has been pulling in ~100 visitors per month for a year?

That doesn't come easy, especially as it takes something like 3-6 months for Google to actually rank content. Which means that whatever you publish today, won't even stand a chance to compete for the prize until it has been ranked properly.

That being said, if you manage to rank high and claim that sweet top spot, you can continue to earn LEO passively by simply just keeping your content up to date moving forward. It's a tough target to hit though, which is why I personally doubt that it would be "encouraging enough" for most people to start creating optimized content.

I also don't mean to come off like all negative or something like that because I truly love the idea and Khal's goal of rewarding content that will bring organic traffic over time.. But it's really hard to come up with a solid solution. It's not as easy as it might seem.

We are both harping on different ends of the spectrum.

I know plenty of bloggers who bring in more traffic than we are all bringing in together all by themselves.

You want a way to get more people doing the "right" things. I think that just a handful of us doing those things could carry the weight for a little - then explosions will happen.

My experience on the blockchain has been that learning things that bring tangible results (money in your pocket) are easily learned my more - than things that are intangible (create more money for everyone through organic growth).

But I've been talking the talk for a while, and only walking a little. I'm building over here - let's see if I can get 100 views organic views per month from some chosen articles.

I just need more info.

Like ... where can I see the views on my posts?

That is very true. I want more people to focus on creating content that I know would be beneficial in terms of growth for everyone. The more optimized content we have, the quicker we would grow. It's that simple.

Also, I am not talking about people becoming some SEO experts or "gurus". I'm talking about doing the most basic things with the content. Like including links to related posts and more importantly, create outward-facing content rather than the inward-facing content.

I don't want to take away the inward-facing content, because we need that. But I would much rather see a ratio closer to 50/50 instead of the, I don't know, 90/10(?) we have.

That's the whole point for me wanting to reward such type of content, so it will encourage people to create it.

My experience on the blockchain has been that learning things that bring tangible results (money in your pocket) are easily learned my more - than things that are intangible (create more money for everyone through organic growth).

That is exactly why I would love to reward optimized content more. That would lead to overall growth, which would benefit everyone, including the creator of the content, short- and long term.

Like ... where can I see the views on my posts?

As views are easy to manipulate, I use tools like ubersuggest for keyword research and to track organic traffic. However, it requires content to be ranked on Google in the first place, which takes several months.

That being said, you could use simpleanalytics to track the amount of page views you get.

https://simpleanalytics.com/leofinance.io?period=year&search=paths%3Ametzli

That link will give you the details for how many page views you've got during the last 365 days for instance. Just note that page views and unique visitors are different, so it doesn't mean that you've got X amount of visitors because you have X amount of page views. It simple means that the page have been viewed X amount of times. So in theory, a page could be viewed by one person multiple times and it would include each view in the counter.

It could give you a good idea of things though. Especially as you can look at the different referrals, and Google or other search engines is definitely the ones we are aiming for.

That was a very interesting rabbit hole I just went down.

When you say "outward facing content" are you talking about links taht take us away from leo?

When you say "outward facing content" are you talking about links taht take us away from leo?

Whenever I'm talking about outward-facing content, it's basically content that is being produced to attract outsiders. Meaning, content that seeks/wants/needs attention of people outside of Hive/LeoFinance.

Inward-facing content, is basically the opposite, and also the type of content we have a lot more of, due to the nature of how Hive operates.

An example of outward-facing content would be:

While the majority of the existing users already knows these things, or could easily be aware of them due to the literally hundreds of posts talking about HBD savings rather recently, I made one, optimized post that explains things in a rather easy-to-understand way that people outside of Hive will benefit from.

I target certain keywords in an attempt to get more people to my content, which is good for growth over time, as more people will come across "LeoFinance" or "Hive" and eventually join.

After the recent Ad Revenue change on LeoFinance, this also leads to "individual growth" so to speak, as the Ad Revenue will be split between the token holders. So more traffic also means more Ad Revenue.

If we look at one of my other post:

This is certainly more inward-facing content, as the intention of it is to help existing users to create content that will draw attention and generate organic traffic over time. So, that is basically inward-facing content explaining how to create outward-facing content.

Inward-facing content is good to keep the existing users, help them, motivate them and all those things. So we definitely need inward-facing content, but the ratio today is probably something like 90/10, and if we could bump that to just 80/20 or most preferably, more close to 50/50 we would see an insane growth pace in just a few months due to all the optimized content being ranked.

Also, inward-facing content does naturally not lead to more traffic or more Ad Revenue, as we don't see new traffic to the site. We're just using the traffic that is already in place whenever we create inward-facing content, which is why outward-facing content is crucial for overall growth.

I think the top ranking content should earn a lot. I see what you’re saying though - we need to ensure that the competition is a fair competition.

That being said, it seems like it would make sense that if you put in the blood, sweat and tears to make something rank high in the long-run, you should get paid for that.

I just wonder if there are other ways. I mentioned the idea above of creating a ranking algorithm.

Another idea: have different prizes for different metrics. I.e.

  1. #1 ranking article for traffic the past week = 100 LEO prize
  2. “Rising Star” article each week is the article that jumped the rankings the fastest = 100 LEO prize
  3. … etc.

I totally get your point and I agree. I somewhat answered this in my other comment where I talked about having a limit. Increase that to 5K or 10K LEO, whatever floats your boat, but I do think that having a limit could decrease the potential risk of people trying to cheat their way to glory.

This is a cool idea. The more the merrier, as it would increase the overall competition for those various prizes meaning more organic traffic over time.
