El acontecimiento de esta semana gira en torno a los preparativos del viaje de mi amiga Emilia. Después de tres meses compartiendo habitación conmigo en Boa Vista, Roraima, Emilia y su hija se trasladan a Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. Durante este tiempo, convivimos y compartimos de cerca la delicada situación de salud de su hija. Afortunadamente, el sistema de salud nacional y regional consideró su caso como excepcional, y los resultados indicaron que está en excelentes condiciones para someterse a la cirugía cuando los especialistas lo consideren necesario.

This week's event revolves around my friend Emilia's travel arrangements. After three months sharing a room with me in Boa Vista, Roraima, Emilia and her daughter are moving to Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. During this time, we lived together and shared closely the delicate health situation of her daughter. Fortunately, the national and regional health system considered her case as exceptional, and the results indicated that she is in excellent condition to undergo surgery when the specialists deem it necessary.

Este viaje por el interior de Brasil es, para mí, un suceso maravilloso. Van a realizar dos vuelos desde este punto fronterizo de Brasil con Venezuela. Emilia tiene un rostro que refleja una mezcla de alegría y tristeza. Su equipaje ya está revisado y pesado, listo para evitar cualquier percance en el aeropuerto. Ella se preparó desde el día anterior con la ropa y el abrigo que usará al ser recibida por su hijo en Uberlândia. Aquí, en la región norte de Brasil, la sensación térmica oscila entre los 30 y 40 grados, mientras que en el sudeste, donde será recibida, la temperatura será de aproximadamente 6 °. Por eso, Emilia lleva sus guantes y esa sonrisa que combina felicidad y tristeza. Su viaje para mejorar la salud de su hija comenzó desde que salió de casa y dejó a su familia.

This trip through the interior of Brazil is, for me, a wonderful event. They are going to make two flights from this border point of Brazil to Venezuela. Emilia has a face that reflects a mixture of joy and sadness. Her luggage is already checked and weighed, ready to avoid any mishaps at the airport. She has been preparing since the day before with the clothes and coat she will wear when she is received by her son in Uberlândia. Here in the northern region of Brazil, the wind chill is between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius, while in the southeast, where she will be received, the temperature will be around 6 °. That is why Emilia is wearing her gloves and that smile that combines happiness and sadness. Her journey to improve her daughter's health began as soon as she left home and left her family.

Es temprano, son las diez de la mañana, cuando nuestro amigo, el chófer, nos recoge para llevar a Emilia y a su hija al Aeropuerto Internacional de Boa Vista. Emilia sube al asiento con un fuerte dolor de espalda. Sus equipajes, que parecen pequeños envoltorios, se acomodan en el coche. El carro es un modelo nuevo. Una atmósfera de especial sensibilidad cubre el ambiente, sugiriendo que el viaje se realizará por un canal aéreo de una paz fabulosa. Salimos de la rúa Leoncio Barbosa y el chófer se incorpora a una avenida rápida. Luego, consecutivamente, transitamos por otras avenidas cubiertas de vehículos.

It is early, ten o'clock in the morning when our friend, the driver, picks us up to take Emilia and her daughter to Boa Vista International Airport. Emilia climbs into the seat with a bad backache. Her luggage, which looks like small wrappers, is placed in the car. The car is a new model. An atmosphere of special sensibility covers the environment, suggesting that the trip will take place on an air channel of fabulous peace. We leave Rúa Leoncio Barbosa and the driver takes a fast avenue. Then, consecutively, we pass through other avenues covered with vehicles.

El chófer se estaciona en la entrada del aeropuerto. Bajamos del vehículo con las maletas y bolsos en mano. Inmediatamente, busco una silla de ruedas para ayudar a Emilia, ya que el dolor de espalda no le permite caminar. La siento en la silla para ubicarla en la fila de pasajeros. Los empleados de la agencia de viajes, con notable sensibilidad, la llaman por su condición de prioridad debido a su edad y estado. Se inicia el proceso de recepción interna: revisión de boletos y entrega de equipaje. Finalmente, ubican a mi amiga y a su hija en la entrada para abordar el vuelo con destino a Uberlândia.

The driver parks at the entrance to the airport. We get out of the vehicle with our suitcases and bags in hand. Immediately, I look for a wheelchair to help Emilia, as her back pain does not allow her to walk. I sit her in the chair to place her in the passenger row. The travel agency employees, with remarkable sensitivity, call her by her priority status due to her age and condition. The internal reception process begins: checking tickets and handing over luggage. Finally, my friend and her daughter are placed at the entrance to board the flight to Uberlândia.

Me despido de Emilia y su hija. —Amiga, en lo que pueda ayudarte, te ayudaré. Lo que esté a mi alcance, le dije, mirándola a sus diminutos ojos. —Gracias, Hiram, respondió ella. Nos despedimos con un sincero y leve abrazo. Ella se despidió mirándome a los ojos, sentada en la silla de ruedas. Son las 11:45 a.m. Entraron a la sala como a un túnel de paz, en la búsqueda de mejorar su salud y calidad de vida. El vuelo está programado para despegar de la pista aproximadamente a las dos de la tarde.

I say goodbye to Emilia and her daughter. —My friend, whatever I can do to help you, I'll help you. Whatever I can, I said, looking into her tiny eyes. —Thank you, Hiram, she replied. We parted with a sincere and light embrace. She said goodbye looking into my eyes, sitting in the wheelchair. It is 11:45 a.m. They entered the room as if into a tunnel of peace, in the quest to improve their health and quality of life. The flight is scheduled to take off from the tarmac at approximately two o'clock in the afternoon.

Así me retiro de este aeropuerto, cuya arquitectura sencilla y delicada me mantiene en un estado de relajación extraordinario. Después, en mi regreso, le comento al amigo chófer: ¿Sentiste la paz y el canal de paz por donde va a viajar Emilia?

So, I leave this airport, whose simple and delicate architecture keeps me in a state of extraordinary relaxation. Later, on my way back, I say to my chauffeur friend: Did you feel the peace and the channel of peace through which Emilia is going to travel?

Dejo el aeropuerto con la certeza de haber presenciado un momento cargado de amor y esperanza. Que la paz sentida en cada detalle de este viaje sea el motor que impulse a Emilia y a su hija hacia una recuperación plena y la vida que merecen. Mi corazón las acompaña en ese 'túnel de paz', anhelando su regreso con historias de unión familiar, salud y alegría.

I leave the airport with the certainty of having witnessed a moment full of love and hope. May the peace felt in every detail of this journey be the engine that propels Emilia and her daughter towards a full recovery and the life they deserve. My heart goes with them in this ‘tunnel of peace’, longing for their return with stories of family togetherness, health and joy.
