Quiero compartirles mi experiencia de un paseo que deberían realizar si visitan el Estado Bolívar, especialmente en Ciudad Bolívar. Este paseo lo deseaba hacer desde hace un par de años atrás y fue en enero 2023, cuando logré iniciar el año haciendo realidad este anhelo de aventurar a través del Río donde he contemplado los más bellos atardeceres durante los 10 años que he estado residenciada en la ciudad. ¡Y por supuesto, entusiasmé a un grupo de amigos para disfrutarlo mejor!

I want to share with you my experience of a trip that you should do if you visit the State of Bolivar, especially in Ciudad Bolivar. I have been wanting to do this trip for a couple of years and it was in January 2023, when I managed to start the year making this dream come true, to venture through the river where I have seen the most beautiful sunsets during the 10 years I have been living in the city, and of course, I got a group of friends excited to enjoy it better!
Iniciamos la travesía desde Puerto Blohm, el puerto de lanchitas ubicado en un extremo del Paseo Orinoco. Éramos unas 15 personas, listas con nuestros bolsos y nuestras vestimentas cómodas, además de los accesorios para protegernos del sol, aunque el cielo amaneció ese día bastante nublado.
We started the trip from Blohm Port, the small boat harbor located at one end of the Orinoco Promenade. We were about 15 people, ready with our bags and our comfortable clothes, as well as the accessories to protect us from the sun, although the sky dawned that day quite cloudy.
Guiándonos durante el paseo, estaban unos amigos que conocimos durante nuestro trabajo como médicos rurales en Soledad (actual Ciudad Orinoco), en el Estado Anzoátegui, y el capitán de la lancha con su copiloto y su hijo, de aproximadamente 10 años de edad, quien inspiraba serenidad y seguridad, mientras disfrutaba el viaje.
Guiding us during the ride were some friends we met during our work as rural doctors in Soledad (now Ciudad Orinoco), in Anzoátegui State, and the captain of the boat with his co-pilot and his son, about 10 years old, who inspired serenity and security, while enjoying the ride.
La primera parada del recorrido: “La Piedra del Medio”. También conocida como el “Orinocómetro”, por su utilidad para saber cuándo el río baja o está crecido y en esta ocasión, aprovechando la oportunidad de que el río estaba bajo, pudimos llegar hasta ella recorrerla y tomarnos fotos. Me pareció sublime vivir la experiencia porque no era una idea que frecuentaba mis pensamientos y sin embargo, no dejaba de sentirme maravillada por mirar el Río Orinoco y la ciudad desde la perspectiva de esta legendaria formación rocosa.
La Piedra del Medio alberga el mito de que debajo de ella existen galerías en las cuales se encuentra habitando la legendaria y monstruosa “Serpiente de las 7 cabezas”.🐉 (¡Por suerte, no se asomó y nos dejó visitar la piedra con mucha tranquilidad!😁)
Quedé enamorada del paisaje, la brisa, el ruido de las oleadas del río chocando contra las rocas y en especial, de este “pasillo” formado naturalmente, con un adorno de plantas que le da más vistosidad, aprécienlo:
The first stop of the tour: "The Middle Stone". Also known as the "Orinocómetro", because of its usefulness to know when the river is low or high and on this occasion, taking advantage of the opportunity that the river was low, we were able to reach it and take pictures. It seemed sublime to live the experience because it was not an idea that frequented my thoughts and yet, I did not stop feeling amazed to look at the Orinoco River and the city from the perspective of this legendary rock formation.
The Middle Stone harbors the myth that beneath it are galleries in which the legendary and monstrous "Serpent of the 7 Heads" dwells. 🐉 (Luckily, he did not show up and let us visit the stone in peace and quiet!😁)
I fell in love with the landscape, the breeze, the noise of the waves of the river crashing against the rocks and especially this "corridor" formed naturally, with an ornament of plants that gives it more colorful, appreciate it:
La segunda parada fue: El Puente Angostura. Este puente es un emblema y orgullo de todo el pueblo bolivarense y venezolano, con 56 años desde su construcción, es de los puentes colgantes más largos de Latinoamérica, mide aproximadamente 1678,5 metros y une a los Estados Bolívar y Anzoátegui. En mi vida nunca pasé tantas veces sobre él como lo hice en el año 2022, en el ir y venir desde mi residencia hasta mi sitio de trabajo. Siempre aprecio el paisaje desde sus alturas y en esta ocasión, por primera vez, lo aprecié desde sus bases. ¡Espectacular!
The second stop was: The Angostura Bridge. This bridge is an emblem and pride of all the Bolivarian and Venezuelan people, with 56 years since its construction, is one of the longest suspension bridges in Latin America, measuring approximately 1678.5 meters and connects the states of Bolivar and Anzoategui. In my life I have never passed over it as many times as I did in the year 2022, on my way to and from my residence to my place of work. I always appreciate the landscape from its heights and this time, for the first time, I appreciated it from its bases. Spectacular!
La tercera parada fue: Isla El Degredo. Entre las historias de esta isla, se menciona que aquí las embarcaciones arribaban obligatoriamente antes de llegar a Ciudad Bolívar para cumplir una especie de cuarentena cuando se reportaba que provenían de un lugar donde acaecía algún brote epidémico. Otras historias comentan que en la isla se realizaban las celebraciones de la alta sociedad en la época colonial e incluso posteriormente, algunos personajes estuvieron habitando este islote.
The third stop was: El Degredo Island. Among the stories of this island, it is mentioned that here the boats were forced to arrive before reaching Ciudad Bolivar to fulfill a kind of quarantine when it was reported that they came from a place where there was an epidemic outbreak. Other stories say that in the island were held the celebrations of high society in colonial times and even later, some characters were inhabiting this island.
Al apreciar la pendiente de arena de la isla, me surgió la idea de deslizarme como un tobogán pero ¡fue fallido! No deslizaba y me quedé estancada. Luego, entre los pensamientos juguetones grupales, terminamos deslizándonos hasta abajo rodando como troncos, pero solo nos atrevimos 5 personas del grupo. ¡Fue muy divertido! Aunque la arena llegó a lugares prohibidos de mi cuerpo y al final me atasqué una pierna en el lodo de la orilla del playón. 😂
As I appreciated the sandy slope of the island, I had the idea of sliding down like a slide but it was a failure! It wouldn't slide and I got stuck. Then, amidst the playful group thoughts, we ended up sliding all the way down rolling like logs, but only 5 people in the group dared. It was great fun! Although the sand got to forbidden places on my body and in the end I got one leg stuck in the mud at the edge of the beach. 😂
La cuarta y última parada fue: Isla Panadero. De este islote, se cuenta que fue habitado por un panadero en compañía de su familia, intentando evadir impuestos y a la competencia de ventas y, aunque posteriormente retornó a la ciudad, la isla quedó con esa denominación.
Me recordó un poco a las postales de los Médanos de Coro por su paisaje desértico, pero en un tramo de la isla habían unos sembradíos cuidados por un par de señores que asumimos frecuentaban el lugar. Aquí aprovechamos de caminar, disfrutar de la quietud, sumergirnos en la aguas del Río Orinoco y agradecer por la excelente experiencia.
The fourth and last stop was: Baker's Island. It is said that this islet was inhabited by a baker with his family, trying to evade taxes and sales competition, and although he later returned to the city, the island remained with that name.
It reminded me a bit of the postcards of the Medanos de Coro for its desert landscape, but in a stretch of the island there were some crops tended by a couple of gentlemen who we assumed frequented the place. Here we took the opportunity to walk, enjoy the quietness, dive into the waters of the Orinoco River and be thankful for the excellent experience.
