A Thai Garden Wild Year, Part 2
The second instalment of my mini-poem garden journal. One per day about something from our garden, which sits amongst the rice-fields and sugar-palm trees of Petchaburi Province in Thailand.
15th Jan:
The roller is rolling!
A wonderful sight,
A bird roller-coasting,
Its mating flight.
16th Jan:
Watering pump failure,
Buckets employed,
Forty trips,
Not enjoyed.
17th Jan:
This flower turns sour,
With piercing thorns,
That puncture tires,
Their seeds have horns!
18th Jan:
Clash of dagger beaks,
Rivals held tight,
Five shrieking birds,
A major myna fight.
19th Jan:
The rattling pods,
Of tamarind picked,
Less a few,
That squirrels nicked.
20th Jan:
Stilled by rubber,
Outside our gate,
A venomed viper,
In flattened state.
21st Jan:
Above soil and grass,
Another layer lying,
Fifty tiny blues,
All butterflying.
22nd Jan:
Distinctive croak,
The last it makes,
The endless end,
Of frogs in snakes.
23rd Jan:
Sapodillas,
My breakfast make,
Heaviest crop,
Branches break.
24th Jan:
From door it drops,
On arm it lands,
Geckoes slap,
Like clammy hands.
25th Jan:
Standing on ladder,
Picking mangoes,
Caught by a bee,
That stings my nose.
26th Jan:
Cawing crow,
High in the air,
Harrier mobbed,
But doesn't care.
27th Jan:
Three drops,
Then drift away,
Empty clouds,
Hard-baked clay.
28th Jan:
The best veg,
I've ever grown,
Tomato,
Self-sown.
29th Jan:
Spider on water,
Assumptions made,
But it dives deep,
To evade my aid.
30th Jan:
Morning task,
Of clearing reeds,
Stirring clouds,
Of feathery seeds.
31st Jan:
Picking these mangoes,
Comes with a test,
Hanging so close,
To a wild bee's nest.
Yay! 🤗
