- REVIEW - The Boy is an acceptable psychological thriller and horror film. / - RESEÑA - El Niño es una aceptable película de suspenso y terror psicológico. [ENG/ESP]

I have seen so many horror films of such diverse quality in recent years that it would be impossible to make a list, either in terms of theme, quality and plot development, from those in which suspense is the main objective to those impregnated with blood from beginning to end, managing to confuse the viewer between a work of art like a film and the morbid attraction to violence taken to its maximum extreme.

Today I want to share with all the #hivers cinephiles of this community a film quite well made, well dosed, with the right amount of suspense and terror, without abounding in macabre scenes or blood, managing to integrate the viewer in a climate of anguish and suspense in the best style of other classics.

We could say that if it were played by great actors, perhaps we would be talking about a great film, but if the acting quality is acceptable, for this reason we are talking about a film of the so-called psychological horror, with a coherent plot, with good ideas and a more than acceptable acting behaviour.

De películas de terror he visto tantas y de calidades tan diversas en los últimos años que hacer una lista sería impsoible, ya sea en cuanto a temática, calidad y desarrollo argumental, desde aquellas en las cuáles el suspenso es el objetivo principal a aquellas otras impregnadas de sangre del inicio al final, logrando confundir al espectador entre una obra de arte como es una película y la atracción morbosa por la violencia llevada a su extremo máximo.

Hoy quiero compartir con todos los #hivers cinéfilos de esta comunidad una película bastante ben hecha, bien dosificada, con la cuota justa de suspenso y terror, sin abundar en escenas macabras ni de sangre, logrando integrar al espectador en un clima de angustia y suspenso al mejor estilo de otros clásicos.

Podríamos decir que si a interpretarla fueran grandes actores tal vez estaríamos hablando de un gran film, en cambio si bien la calidad actoral es aceptable, por esta misma razón estamos hablando de una película del llamado terror psicológico, con un argumento coherente, con buenas ideas y un comportamiento actoral más que aceptable.

The Boy is a relatively recent film, having been released in 2016 and directed by William Brent Bell, with Craigdarroch Castle in British Columbia as the main filming location.

The film was originally intended to be called The Inhabitant and began to take shape towards the end of 2013, which speaks of a considerable period of preparation in the best style of the big productions, despite having a budget that was not too bulky.

The first actor (actress in this case) to sign on to play the lead role was Lauren Cohan, who was later joined by Jim Norton, Diana Hardcastle, Ben Robson, Rupert Evans and James Russell.

Having said that, let's get to the review!

El Niño es una película relativamente nuestra ya que fue estrenada en 2016 y fue dirigida por William Brent Bell, teniendo como lugar principal de filmación el castillo de Craigdarroch en la Columbia Británica.

La película inicialmente debía llamar El Habitante y comenzó a plasmarse hacia fines del año 2013, lo que habla de un período de preparación considerable al mejor estilo de las grandes producciones, a pesar de contar con un presupuesto no demasiado abultado.

El primer actor (actriz en este caso) en firmar para interpretar el rol principal fue Lauren Cohan a la que posterioemente se agregaron Jim Norton, Diana Hardcastle, Ben Robson, Rupert Evans y James Russell.

Hecha la introducción vamos a la reseña!

Greta (played by Lauren Cohan), trying to escape a troubled past, agrees to work as a nanny for a wealthy married couple in an English village far from the big cities.

Mr. and Mrs. Heelshire (played by Jim Norton and Diana Hardcastle respectively) go on a two-week holiday and leave their son Brahms in Greta's care, advising her to strictly adhere to the rules so that no misfortune can befall them.

The nightmare begins when Greta discovers that Brahms is not really a child but a porcelain doll. The strangeness of the assignment does not deter her from accepting the otherwise well-deserved task, thinking that it is mostly an extravagance of a rich, old married couple.

However, not everything is as she thinks; on the contrary, things begin to take a dangerous and terrifying turn. For example, when she ignores the established rules, something abnormal happens in the house. The doll appears in different parts of the house as if an invisible hand was carrying it from one place to another.

And to complete the aura of mystery that surrounds the villa, isolated from any urban centre, the Heelshire couple, apparently from their holiday home, write a letter announcing their suicide.

Drawn by the curiosity of all these mysterious events, Greta manages to contact the only human being she can find, Malcolm (a fine performance by Rupert Evans), a former villager who fills her in on the situation: Brahms was indeed a boy who died in a fire when he was 8 years old.

From then on Greta starts to follow the rules strictly and nothing unusual happens. However, Malcom warns her to stay away because - according to the old villager - there is a halo of evil that surrounds the village. Apparently the boy, in his real life, had certain attitudes of an evil person and had even been involved in the disappearance and murder of a girl his own age, missing and found again in the middle of the forest with her skull smashed in.

Police already suspicious of the child had arrived at the house to find it engulfed in flames. The couple had survived the fire but the child had not.

Despite these warnings Greta continues in the villa and unexpectedly receives a visit from her ex-boyfriend Cole (who had forced her to have an abortion and for that reason Gerat had taken refuge in a place as far away from him as possible) who wants to force her to return to him.

When she refuses and in a fit of rage Cole destroys the doll, which suddenly transforms into a person with a disfigured face similar to that of the doll. And reality emerges in all its drama.

In reality Brahms had not been killed but disfigured in the fire and had taken refuge in the basement of the villa, escaping all human contact. Under the pretext of needing care, he had his parents hire nannies whom he then, on a whim, promptly murdered.

However, Brahms falls in love with Greta, kills Cole and stabs Malcolm, who tries to get Greta out of the nightmarish environment. Trying to save Malcom, Greta deceives and attacks Brahms with a screwdriver until he falls to the floor inert, believing him dead, Greta flees with Malcom to the outside world in search of a new life.

The final sequence of the film shows a perfectly healthy Brahms putting the pieces of the broken doll back together.

Greta (interpretada por Lauren Cohan) que intenta escapar de un pasado problemático acepta trabajar como niñera de un acaudalado matrimonio residente en un pueblo de Inglaterra, alejado de las grandesa ciudades.

El matrimonio del Sr. y la Sra. Heelshire (interpretados por Jim Norton y Diana Hardcastle respectivamente) se van de vacaciones por dos semanas y dejan al cuidado de Greta a su hijo Brahms recomendándole de seguir estrictamente el cumplimiento de las reglas establecidas para que no ocurra una desgracia.

La pesadilla comienza cuando Greta descubre que, en realidad, Brahms no es un niño sino un muñeco de porcelana. Lo extraño del encargo no le impiede de aceptar la tarea, bien padada por otro lado, pensando que se trata más que nada de una extravagancia de un matrimonio rico y anciano.

Sin embargo no todo es como ella piensa, al contrario las cosas comienzan a tener una tendencia peligrosa y terrificnte. Por ejemplo cuando ignora las reglas establecidas algo anómalo sucede en la casa. El muñeco aparece en distintos lugares de la casa como si una mano invisible lo llevara de un lado de otro.

Y para completar ese halo de misterio que rodea la villa aislada de cualquier centro urbano, el matrimonio Heelshire aparentemente desde su lugar de vacaciones le escribe una carta anunciando su suicidio.

Atraída por la curiosidad de todos estos eventos misteriosos Greta logra contactar al único ser humano que encuentra, Malcom (buena interpretaciónde Rupert Evans), un antiguo poblador que la mete al corriente de la situación: Brahms era en efecto un niño que murió en un incendio cuando tenía 8 años.

A partir de ese momento Greta comienza a seguir estrictamente las reglas y nada raro sucede. Sin embargo Malcom la advierte de alejarse porque -según el viejo poblador- hay una halo de maldad que envuelve la villa. Aparentemente el niño, en su vida real, tenía ciertas actitudes propias de una persona malvada e incluso había sido involucrada en la desaparición y asesinato de una niña de su misma edad, desaparecido y reecontrada en medio del bosque con el cráneo destrozado.

La policía que ya sospechaba del niño había llegado a la casa para encontrarla envuelta en llamas. El matrimonio había sobrevivido al incendio pero el niño no.

No obstante estas advertencias Greta continúa en la villa e inesperadamente recibe la visita de su ex-novio Cole (que la había obligado a abortar y por ese motivo Gerat se había refugiado en un lugar lo más lejos posible de él) quien la quiere obligar a regresar con él.

Ante su negativa y en un ataque de rabia Cole destruye el muñeco que de repente se transforma en una persona con el rostro desfigurado similar al del muñeco. Y la realidad emerge en toda su dramaticidad.

En realidad Brahms no había quedado muerto sino desfigurado en el incendio y se había refugiado en el sótano de la villa escapando a cualquier contacto humano. Con la excusa de necesitar cuidados hacía contratar a sus padres a niñeras a las cuales luego, por cualquier capricho, asesinaba puntualmente.

Sin embargo Brahms se enamora de Greta, mata a Cole y apuñala a Malcom que trata de sacar a Greta de ese ambiente de pesadilla. Tratando de salvar a Malcom Greta engaña y ataca a Brahms con un destornillador hasta que éste cae inerte al piso.Creyéndolo muerto Greta huye con Malcom hacia el mundo exterior en busca de una nueva vida.

La secuencia final de la película muestra a un Brahms en perfecto estado de salud recomponiendo las piezas del muñeco roto.

It has all the ingredients of a good film, the idea of the doll that is actually transformed into a sadistic killer who has not died but has taken refuge in the mansion, although not original, is well developed in a context where there are no major flaws. The characters are disturbing, the image of the doll-person is sufficiently repulsive to cause terror and tension and the actors line up in a uniform work without great performances but also without great mistakes. They all play their roles with professionalism in a homogeneous team where the masonry and some of the settings stand out.

Tiene todos los ingredientes de una buena película, la idea del muñeco que se transforma en realidad en un sádico asesino que no ha muerto sino que se ha refugiado en la mansión si bien no es original está bien desarrollada en un contexto donde no se notan grandes fallas. Los personajes son inquietantes, la imagen del muñeco-persona es lo suficientemente repulsiva para causar terror y tensión y los actores se alinean en un trabajo uniforme sin grandes actuaciones pero también sin grandes errores. Todos cumplen con su rol con profesionalidad en un equipo homogéeneo donde se destaca la másica y algunas ambientaciones.
