[ENG/ESP] Money Heist between a promising beginning and an (un)expected denouement. / La Casa de Papel entre un inicio prometedor y un desenlace (in)esperado.

Money Heist is one of the most acclaimed Spanish television series of all time. / La Casa de Pappel es una de las series de televisión españolas más aclamadas de todos los tiempos. /

Last weekend I finished watching the series, considered by critics and the general public to be the most successful Spanish TV series of all time. And therefore the most watched, with the highest ratings. I am referring, obviously, to Money Heist (in spanish La Casa de Papel).

Normally I don't read any comments about the end of any series when I'm watching it. I like to wait with the unknown of not having any clue about the final outcome.

And with regard to Money Heist (in spanish La Casa de Papel), the same problem of all successful series arises: the ending.

El fin de semana pasado terminé de ver la serie, considerada por críticos y público en general, como la serie televisiva española más exitosa de todos los tiempos. Y por lo tanto la más vista, con mayor rating. Me refiero, obviamente, a La Casa de Papel.

Normalmente no leo ningún comentario respecto al final de cualquier serie cuando la estoy viendo. Me gusta esperar con la incógnita de no tener ninguna pista sobre el desenlace final.

Y respecto a La Casa de Papel se plantea el mismo interorgante de todas las series exitosas: el final.

It's not just a problem with this series. It is a problem in general that afflicts producers who try to squeeze the maximum out of their television products in this case. But it also happened years ago with cinema. Remember all the Rambo sequels in the cinema for going way back in time? And the examples go on to (almost) infinity.

Money Heist, in my humble opinion, is an acceptable product that mixes the concept of social anarchy -a bit exaggerated-, one of the two Spanish icons of that artistic movement called "modernism" as opposed to the prevailing "conservatism" in European society in general, such as Salvador Dalí (the other in Antoni Gaudí) and the necessary dose of romanticism that always seems to be present in Netflix products.

No es un problema solo de esta serie. Es un problema en general que aqueja a los productores que tratan de exprimir el máximo de sus productos televisivos en este caso. Pero también sucedía años atrás con el cine. Recuerdan todos los sequel de Rambo en el cine por ir bastante atrás en el tiempo? Y los ejemplos siguen hasta (casi) el infinito.

La Casa de Papel, a mi modesto juicio, es un producto aceptable donde se mezcla el concepto de anarquía social -un poco exagerado-, una de las dos iconas españolas de ese movimiento artístico llamada el "modernismo" en contraposición con el "conservadorismo" imperante en la sociedad europea en general, como lo es Salvador Dalí (el otro en Antoni Gaudí) y la necesaria dosis de romanticismo que parece estar siempre presente en los productos de Netflix.

But if there is something about the Netflix series that I can't quite digest, it's the obsession with ratings. It has even led it to cancel series as soon as the first season is over due to low ratings.

I'm not going to deny the importance of the famous rating. The higher the ratings, the more advertising from the big companies spontaneously emerges and has a very high value in the series, which allows it to continue. But establishing a storyline season by season without a continuous storyline is not the best thing to do.

Pero si hay algo en la series de Netflix que no logro terminar de digerir es la obsesión por el rating. Que la ha llevado incluso a cancelar series apenas terminada la primera temporada por baja audiencia.

No voy a negar la importancia del famoso rating. A mayores indices de audiencia la publicidad de las grandes empresas surge espontánea y tiene valores muy altos en la serie, lo que permite que ésta continúe. Pero establecer un argumento temporada a temporada sin una línea argumental continuada no es lo mejor.

Series like The Wire, The Breaking Bad and partially The Sopranos remain etched in my memory as probably the best series ever. With a perfectly defined linear plot to be developed over five seasons (it was the standard length). Where there was a perfect coherence between the beginning and the end of the series.

Not for nothing have all the attempts to make a continuation of the series failed. This is called coherence of the producers. Perhaps some seasons had higher ratings than others, but the series continued along the same lines, without losing its charm, attraction and, above all, its quality.

Me quedan grabadas en la memoria series como The Wire, The Breaking Bad y parcialmente Los Sopranos como las mejores series probablemente de siempre. Con un argumento perfectamente lineal definido a desarrollarse durante cinco temporadas (era la duración standard). Donde había una perfecta coherencia entre el inicio y el final de la serie.

No en vano han fracasado todos los tentativos de hacer una continuación de las mismas. Eso se llama coherencia de los productores. Porque tal vez algunas temporadas tuvieron más rating que otras pero la serie continuó con la línea trazada, sin perder encanto, atracción y, sobre todo, calidad.

So did Dexter in its first five seasons. Then its producers got caught up in the business and extended it for three more seasons. Until in the end they didn't know how to end it.

I got that impression from The Paper House.

As its name suggests, it was planned to be limited to the Spanish Federal Reserve, the Spanish national mint that issues paper money.

However, its success led its producers to plan the continuation of the series with the theft of the Bank of Spain's gold bullion reserve. Always with valid plot lines: the anarchic attack to disestablish the currency, the fragility of the economy (in this criticism perhaps the best of the whole series), the intervention of the European Union and certain caustic and ironic comments.

También lo tuvo Dexter en sus cinco pimeras temporadas. Después sus productores se vieron atrapados en el business y la alargaron tres temporadas más. Hasta que al final no sabían como terminarla.

Me dio esa impresión La Casa de Papel.

Como su nombre lo indica era prevista para que su desarrollo se limitara a la Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, que en España es la que emite el papel moneda.

Sin embargo el éxito llevó a sus productores a planear la continuidad de la serie con el robo de la Reserva del Banco de España en lingotes de oro. Siempre con líneas argumentales válidas: el ataque anárquico para desestablizar la moneda, la fragilidad de la economía (en esta crítica tal vez lo mejor de toda la serie), el intervento de la Unión Europea y ciertos comentarios cáusticos e irónicos.

The issue is that in the middle the whole plot had to be rescheduled and some of the plot holes are very clearly noticeable.

For example, the absurd death of Tokio (perhaps by decision of the actress herself), the central character of the whole plot, and the incorporation at the last minute of a certain Pamplona, an unknown character within the acting structure who adds absolutely nothing but only the discussion of why she has chosen that name (obviously because of the bullfights).

None of the other characters, with three years of the series behind them, had to justify the origin of their name.

El tema es que en el medio se debió reprogramar todo la trama y algunos baches se notan con mucha claridad.

Por ejemplo la absurda muerte de Tokio (tal vez por decisión de la propia actriz) personaje central de toda la trama y la incorporación a último momento d eun tal Pamplona, personaje desconocido dentro de la estructura actoral que no agrega absolutamente nada sino solo la discusión de por qué ha elegido ese nombre (obviamente por las corridas de toros)

Ninguno de los otros personajes, con tres años de la serie sobre sus espaldas, tuvo que justificar el origen de su nombre.

At a certain point when the stolen loot is, in turn, stolen by Berlin's son and his lover, the Professor tells the gang barricaded in the Bank that there is no future plan devised to counteract this action.

However, one chapter later, a whole schedule of sleuthing appears that includes even the Bay of Biscay, leaving footprints to try to confuse the police and buy time.

Finding the stolen gold in the prefabricated house in a quarter of an hour's viewing time will surely set a record.

I can understand that the screenwriters have worked four-handed as they say in Italy to patch up the plot and make it believable. And to a large extent they succeeded. But it shows.

A un cierto momento cuando el robado es, a su vez, robado por el hijo de Berlín y su amante, el Profesor dice a la banda barricada en el Banco que no hay ningún plan futuro ideado para contrarrestar esta acción.

Sin embargo un capítulo más tarde aparece todo un cronograma de despistaje que incluye hasta el Mar Cantábrico dejando huellas para tratar de confundir a la policía y ganar tiempo.

Encontrar el oro robado en la casa preafabricada en un cuarto de hora de visión seguramente marcará un récord.

Puedo entender que los guionistas hayan trabajado a cuatro manos como se dice en Italia para emparchar la trama y hacerla creíble. Y en gran parte lo lograron. Pero se nota.

Like the final solution. Posing as dead men, they arrive at an air base where they are greeted in total silence and anonymity and are surrounded by a double line of soldiers. Is it possible that none of them will reveal the secret they want to keep so well?

Because the object or the final moral is precisely that: a great lie that must subsist over time, for years and years, because the reserves have disappeared and the ingots in the Bank of Spain are simply bronze (or brass) as we want to call it.

With characters that could have continued to contribute their charisma to the series gone (Oslo, Nairobi, Tokyo) and new characters with little plot and acting consistency (Pamplona, Berlin's son, Berlin's wife and future lover of his son, etc.).

I'm not going to discuss the ending because I think it's the most difficult part of the series. Especially when it was not foreseen at the beginning.

Como la solución final. Haciéndose pasar por muertos llegan a una base aérea donde en ver ser recibidos en total silencio y anonimato son circundados por una doble fila de militares. Posible que ninuna de éstos vaya a revelar el secreto que tan bien quieren guardar?

Porque el objeto o la moraleja final es precisamente esa: una gran mentira que debe subsistir en el tiempo, por años y años, porque las reservas han desaparecido y los lingotes que hay en el Banco de España son simplemente de bronce (o latón) como querramos llamarlo.

Con personajes que podrían haber continuado a aportar su carisma a la serie desaparecidos (Oslo, Nairobi, Tokio) y personajes nuevos con poca consistencia argumental y actoral (Pamplona, el hijo de Berlin, la mujer de Berlin y futura amante de su hijo, etc.)

No voy a discutir el final porque creo que es la parte más difícil de la serie. Sobre todo cuando no ha sido previsto al inicio.

La última temporada de la serie presenta numerosos flashbacks de Berlín -ya fallecido- preparando con su hijo y su mujer el modo de extraer los lingotes de oro del Banco de Espáña

That is why I highlight the three series mentioned in the previous paragraphs. Because even if we, avid consumers of series, didn't know it, the ending was already written by the scriptwriters. The beginning, the end and in the middle a whole plot development, which could be disliked, but in total harmony with the rest.

Harmony, that's the word that seems to be missing in this series where at times it seems that we are watching a series about the war in Vietnam, with moments of war exaggerated to the point of exasperation.

But, after all, perhaps this lack of harmony in the development of the plot is linked to the very origin of La Casa de Papel: a series in which the anarchic factor was the determining element.

After all, the bank robber Willie Sutton, who between 1920-1950 perpetrated more than a hundred heists in the USA using disguises, without firing a single shot, managing to steal more than two million dollars, never thought that his hectic life would be the model for a successful protocol used on television.

Por eso destaco las tres series citadas en párrafos anteiores. Porque aunque nosotros, ávidos consumidores de series no lo supiéramos no lo supiéramos, el final ya estaba escrito por los guionistas. El inicio, el final y en el medio todo un desarrollo argumental, que podía no gustar, ero en total armonía con el resto.

Armonía, esa es la palabra que parece faltar en esta serie donde por momentos pareciera que estamos viendo una serie sobre la guerra en Vietnam, con momentos bélicos exagerados hasta la exasperación.

Pero, después de todo, tal vez esa falta de armonía en el desarrollo de la trama esté ligada al origen mismo de La Casa de Papel: una serie en la cuál el factor anárquico era el elemento determinante.

Al final de cuentas el ladrón de bancos Willie Sutton -en el cuál está inspirada la serie- que entre los años 1920-1950 perpetró más de un centenar de golpes en los EE. UU. usando disfraces, sin disparar un solo tiro, logrando robar un botín superior a los dos millones de dólares, nunca pensó que su vida tan agitada iba a ser el modelo de un exitoso protocolo usando en televisión.
