The Martyr Massacre

There are monsters you simply want to see dying, even though they are in your rows—or better yet, only when they are on your side. Yes, I am talking about the Martyrs here. Such cards gain extra importance when it comes to the Born Again ruleset. The early Christians could envy the possibility of putting their life as a martyrdom sacrifice more than once. No wonder such battles usually remind me of the old Roman games where Christian slaves faced lions and other beasts like fully armed gladiators with zero chance of survival. Martyrs fall like flies every now and then in Splinterlands. In this battle, three of them managed to perish six times in total. What a lot!

I don’t play Franz Ruffmane as often as other summoners because I feel its +1 armor buff is quite weak. However, this time I needed a cheap healer, and I have one among my Gladiator cards.

I did not employ a real tank for this one; Venari Marksrat was more like a cattle waiting in the slaughterhouse queue. Similar to many Christian martyrs in the Roman arenas, he was even unable to attack in this battle.

And just like in the Colosseum back then, my Martyr was followed by a tiger. A flying one in this case—the great Kralus himself. One of my favorite monsters in the entire game was intended to get buffed and then eliminate the entire army one by one.

Sola Ranjell played a keen supportive role in healing Kralus. With 5 HP and a magic attack for only 3 mana points, this card is a gem.

Speaking about true gems, there’s another hidden one in the rear of my pack. Halving Alchemist can tame even over-buffed Quora Towershead thanks to his Halving ability. You just have to hope he hits the target eventually.

As usual, Soul Fiend was there just for being for free. This monster didn’t even participate.

The Battle

Both front Martyrs died twice, as expected, within the first two rounds. Then it was the clash of the titans—Kalus and Quora Towershead face to face and with no mercy. I was in the stronger position though; my monster couldn’t get debuffed and kept being healed. Plus, my Halving Alchemist managed to shoot down Towershead's attack stats. Then it was a clear one for my flying tiger who easily cracked the rest of my opponent’s pack.

This battle was about choosing the best cards with the highest possible synergy—a task that I handled significantly better than my opponent. Thanks to the fact that my monsters worked together, the result was a decisive victory.

I've been playing Splinterlands for several days now and I'm still finding it hard to get fully into the game. I've bought the spellbook and a few maps, but I'm still feeling my way around. At the moment, my objectives are to earn SPs and above all to learn certain strategies.

For the last two days, I haven't been able to play due to lack of time. However, I really enjoy reading articles like yours, where you describe your battles and your personal impressions. It's fascinating to be able to "enter" a player's mind and understand his way of thinking.

Writing about Splinterlands is more fun than playing it, and it pays off better in my case ;)

Some people run bots rather than playing themselves. It may be more in line with your micro passive income strategy.

Haha, I think it would be much more profitable in my case too. Especially since I've only bought the Spellbook so far and I've only bought these cards.

So even though I'm winning games, I'm not actually winning anything. I confess I don't really understand the game's winnings mechanics. But for the moment, I'm just playing for fun.

As for bots, yes, they could add to my winnings strategy, but are they good for the game?

Isn't using bots bad for the game?

I don't know whether the're good for the game or not, but many people run them successfully. It's true that you'd have to buy or rent a bunch of cards including summoners to be able to earn anything. When you play with the starter cards, you only get points to the standings, no rewards.

Maybe I'll try bots in that case. But for now, I want to understand the mechanics better. I think that before delegating something, it is good to understand it yourself.

My goal is to earn SP to then have at least the end of season chests. But for that, you have to win games with almost only cards that are not basic cards?

I have seen people who advise renting card packs at the start because there are plenty of them that are not expensive. I'm curious what you think about it?

Yes, you have to keep winning games with cards you either own or rent by somebody. When I need cards, I rent them, play for a while, claim all the possible rewards and then the rental expires.

I only have cards worth like $30, plus some Soulbound and Gladiator cards you cannot trade or rent. And it works great. Plus I can publish such strategy post every now and then, and when it succeeds, it earns about $10, like this one, which is more then I pay for seasonal rentals.

Ok thanks, it helps me a lot to have this kind of discussion. I really like this principle of buying a card and renting it.

I used to play Hearthstone (I was bad, but I play mostly for fun), and without paying it was impossible to play properly. Now you have to pay, but at least you can expect a return on your investment.

When I get a bit more proficient, I'll think about writing strategic articles 👍

All the updates that happen have to be understood very well and over time it becomes very difficult for us to win the game if we don't change the cards.

Looks like it would be a lot of fun playing this.
