¡Hola! Mi nombre es Gerardo Ruiz, y vine a presentarme para que conozcas un poquito sobre mí. Soy venezolano, nací hace más de 57 años en Lagunillas, estado Zulia en la costa oriental del Lago de Maracaibo. Por razones ya conocidas sobre la situación política, económica y social de Venezuela, y acompañado por mi esposa y nuestros dos hijos decidimos emigrar.

Renuncie a la empresa en la que había trabajado por 15 años cerca de Valencia, estado Carabobo, vendimos o regalamos prácticamente todo lo que poseíamos, y nos mudamos con dos maletas cada uno. Residimos en Canadá desde el 2004, y después de vivir en tres ciudades y cuatro diferentes casas, llamamos hogar a la región metropolitana de Edmonton, la capital de Alberta.

Hello! My name is Gerardo Ruiz, and I came to introduce myself so you can get to know a little bit about me. I am Venezuelan, I was born more than 57 years ago in Lagunillas, Zulia state on the eastern shore of Maracaibo’s Lake. For reasons already known about the political, economic and social situation in Venezuela, and accompanied by my wife and our two children we decided to emigrate.

I resigned from the company where I had worked for 15 years near Valencia, Carabobo state, sold or gave away practically everything we owned, and moved with two suitcases each. We have lived in Canada since 2004, and after living in three cities and four different houses, we call the metropolitan region of Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, home.

Aterrizamos en Toronto en febrero con un frígido -28C, y aun cuando sabíamos que los inviernos eran fríos, no teníamos idea de cómo se siente esta temperatura, así que lo voy a resumir con solo un ¡Guao!

Como es de esperar el choque cultural fue grande, y el proceso de adaptación lento y a veces incómodo, afortunadamente los retos que nos hemos encontrado han sido superables.

We landed in Toronto in February to a frigid -28C (-18F), and even though we knew winters were cold, we had no idea what this temperature felt like, so I'll sum it up with just a Wow!

As expected, the cultural shock was great, and the adaptation process slow and sometimes uncomfortable, fortunately the challenges we have encountered have been manageable

En relación con mi área de trabajo profesional, por más de 30 años me he dedicado al sector técnico (sistemas de calidad, ensambladoras de equipo original, garantías e ingeniería de campo) en la manufactura de neumáticos, también llamados llantas, gomas y cauchos, dependiendo del país donde te encuentres.

También he tratado diferentes ideas de negocio, algunas totalmente lunáticas, como la venta de trajes de baños en un país donde el verano es muy corto y dejas de usar chaqueta por solo tres meses cada año. Después experimenté en el sector compra de casas para alquilar. Mas tarde descubrí el SEO (Search Engine Optimization), cuyo objetivo es incrementar la visibilidad de tu website en las listas de búsqueda y el desarrollo de websites, todas estas ocurrencias no sobrevivieron más que unos cuantos meses.

Recientemente me zambullí en el mundo de day trading, donde adquieres posiciones en el mercado de valores por menos de un día. Buscando oportunidades a través del análisis técnico de las gráficas del mercado, disfruté esto una enormidad. Inclusive durante el periodo de entrenamiento con transacciones de papel tuve saldo positivo, con ganancias teóricas, pero no me imagino mirando el comportamiento del mercado por horas, día tras día. Así que borrón y cuenta nueva, a comenzar una vez más.

In relation to my professional work area, for more than 30 years I have been dedicated to the technical sector (quality systems, original equipment assemblers, warranties and field engineering) in the manufacture of tires.

I have also tried different business ideas, some of them totally crazy ones, like selling bathing suits in a country where the summer is very short, and you stop wearing a jacket for only three months every year. Then I experimented in the sector of buying houses for rent. Later I discovered SEO (Search Engine Optimization), which aims to increase the visibility of your website in search engines and the development of websites, all these occurrences did not survive more than a few months.

Recently plunged into the world of day trading, acquiring positions in the stock market for less than a full day. Specifically, looking for opportunities through technical analysis of market charts, I enjoyed this immensely. Even during the training period with paper transactions, I had a positive balance, with theoretical profits, but I can't imagine myself looking at the behavior of the stock market for hours, day after day. Back to square one.

Revisando los libros que encuentro en casa y los podcasts que usualmente escucho, me doy cuenta de que hay varios elementos de los que digiero mucha información: finanzas personales, historia, comida, salud y viajes. No es casualidad que cuando tengo que explicar situaciones donde varios elementos deben integrase para conseguir un resultado, termino hablando de ensaladas.

Hace vario años desarrolle un mapa de mi vida, no recuerdo de donde salió el cuestionario, y en esa oportunidad encontré que: “quería usar mis habilidades para investigar y analizar información sobre: finanzas personales, historia y comida, para crear un impacto positivo en mi familia, amistades y clientes, porque principalmente valoro: la familia, la independencia y el sentido del logro. Esto me ayudara a estar sano, ser creativo y crear estabilidad económica.”

Reviewing the books, I find at home and the podcasts I usually listen to, I realize that there are several elements from which I digest a lot of information: personal finance, history, food, health and travel. It is no coincidence that when I must explain situations where several elements must be integrated to achieve a result, I end up talking about salads.

Several years ago, I developed a map of my life, I don't remember where the questionnaire came from, and at that time I found that: "I wanted to use my skills to research and analyze information about personal finances, history and food, to create a positive impact on my family, friends and clients, because I primarily value: family, independence and sense of accomplishment. This will help me to be healthy, creative and create financial stability."

Descubrí el agua tibia, una vez más, y después de variados intentos en diferentes direcciones, esto es de lo que voy a hacer: escribir sobre mis hobbies, y debo confesar que no tengo nada preparado para este recorrido que hoy comienzo.

También debo indicar que estoy tan acostumbrado a escribir reportes técnicos, donde solo encuentras hechos y muchas cifras, que es difícil expresarme únicamente con palabras, por lo que siento que hacen falta números con puntos o comas en estos párrafos. Este será definitivamente un reto muy interesante.

I discovered the warm water, once again, and after several attempts in different directions, this is what I am going to do: write about my hobbies, and I must confess that I have nothing prepared for this journey that I am starting today.

I should also point out that I am so used to writing technical reports, where you only find facts and figures, that it is difficult to express myself with words only, so I feel that numbers with periods or commas are missing in these paragraphs. So this will be a very interesting challenge.

Una experiencia diferente, recientemente en un restaurante de comida china le pedí al mesonero que me sugiriese para llevar un postre auténticamente asiático, y él me recomendó pastelitos rellenos con crema de fruta Durian. Esta fue una experiencia inolvidable, por razones que explico en el próximo párrafo, y aprendí que lo que en otras culturas se considera una fruta, puede que no lo sea en la tuya.

El Durian originario de Malasia, Tailandia y Borneo, es considerado el Rey de las Frutas por su apariencia, versatilidad y contenidos de vitaminas y minerales, incluso es usado como medicamento. Pero las dos principales características que lo definen son un fuerte y desagradable olor, es una mezcla de cloaca, fruta, basura y cebolla, es esta la razón por la que está prohibido en algunos hoteles, aeropuertos y transporte público. Y un sabor que no tiene comparación, algo así como una mezcla de queso, caramelo, almendras, y cebolla.

De todas maneras, mi sugerencia con relación a la comida es sencilla: si no lo has probado ¿cómo sabes que no te gusta?

Para terminar de manera chistosa, en la siguiente oportunidad que visite el mismo restaurante, y el mismo mesonero que ya me reconoce me pregunta que cómo me pareció la sugerencia del postre de Durian, diplomáticamente le explico que no nos gustó. Para mi sorpresa y risas de ambos, me confesó que el detestaba esta fruta aun siendo asiático.

A different experience, recently in a Chinese restaurant I asked the waiter to suggest me an authentic Asian dessert to take with me, and he recommended me Durian fruit cream filled pastries. This was an unforgettable experience, for reasons I will explain in the next paragraph, and I learned that what is considered a fruit in other cultures may not be in yours.

The Durian, native to Malaysia, Thailand and Borneo, is considered the King of Fruits because of its appearance, versatility and vitamin and mineral content, it is even used as a medicine. But the two main characteristics that define it are a strong and unpleasant smell, it is a mixture of sewage, fruit, garbage and onion, this is the reason why it is banned in some hotels, airports and public transport. And a taste that has no comparison, like a mixture of cheese, caramel, almonds, and onion.

Anyhow, my suggestion regarding food is simple: if you haven't tried it, how do you know you don't like it?

To finish in a funny way, the next time I visited the same restaurant, and the same waiter who already recognized me asked me how I liked his Durian dessert suggestion, I tactfully explained that we didn't like it. To my surprise and to the laughter of both of us, he confessed that he hated this fruit even though he was Asian.

Llego diciembre y para mantener nuestras tradiciones, este pasado fin de semana preparamos en casa hallacas. Pero primeros establezcamos que en nuestro hogar la reina del sabor es mi esposa, yo apenas se cocinar a nivel de supervivencia, mi pequeño aporte consiste en la preparación de las hojas de plátano y a cocinarlas.

¿Pero que es una hallaca? Es la representación de la venezolanidad en un plato, y consiste en un espeso guiso de carne de res, cerdo o pollo, aderezado con cebolla, ajo, aceitunas, alcaparras y otros ingredientes más. Este guiso lo encuentras cubierto por una capa de harina de maíz condimentada, y todo este paquetito de sabores salados, dulces y ácidos están envueltos por hojas de plátanos.

Finalmente llego al punto del cual quería hablar, este diciembre ha sido hasta ahora sumamente frio y el día de preparar las hallacas estaba a -21C y ha sido la temperatura más baja que recuerde cuando hemos preparado hallacas en casa.

Hemos tratado diferentes procedimientos para suavizar las hojas de plátano, que conseguimos congeladas en paquetes de medio kilo, porque en otro caso todas se partirían porque están muy rígidas. La mejor manera que hemos encontrado es asarlas sobre la parrillera, por lo que fue mucho más lento que en años anteriores terminar de preparar las hojas en esta ocasión. December is here and to keep our traditions, this past weekend we prepared hallacas at home. But first let's establish that in our home the queen of flavor is my wife, I barely know how to cook at a survival level, my small contribution consists of preparing the banana leaves and cooking them.

But what is a hallaca? It is the representation of Venezuelanness in a dish, and consists of a thick stew of beef, pork or chicken, seasoned with onions, garlic, olives, capers and other ingredients.

This stew is covered by a layer of seasoned corn flour, and all this little package of savory, sweet and sour flavors are wrapped in banana leaves.

Finally, I get to the point I wanted to talk about, this December has been extremely cold so far, and the day of preparing the hallacas it was -21C (-6F) and it has been the lowest temperature I can remember when we have prepared hallacas at home.

We have tried different procedures to soften the banana leaves, which we get frozen in half kilo packages, because otherwise they would all split because they are very stiff. The best way we have found is to grill them, so it was much slower than in previous years to finish preparing the leaves this time.
