A letter to my newborn cousin

As a little girl, I adore babies, their innocent beautiful smile, their baby smell and the tenderness of their skin. I so much crave a baby that I begged my mother to have another child but my pleas never changed anything.

Then my maternal grandmother's last born got married and I was ecstatic. I was happy for her truly but my happiness was more because of what my mother had told me. I learnt that since my aunt was getting married then there will be a new baby in the family. The thought of a new baby joining the family raised my spirit so high that even the endless errands I went on during the wedding period couldn't dampen my spirit. I prayed to God every day to bless my aunt with a baby very quickly. The news arrived about my aunt's pregnancy and it was good news for me. After the news, I started praying for her safe delivery. Then, I didn't know the deep meaning of safe delivery but my mother had explained that the prayers were for her and the baby to be safe. I kept on praying and nine months flew by.

I remember coming home so hungry from school that fateful day and meeting my aunt's husband at home. I had wondered why he came because they live in another town miles away from us. Then he told me the good news, my aunt had delivered a baby girl the night before and he came over to tell my mom. I was so happy that the feeling of hunger disappeared. I wanted to meet the baby right away, but my mother was never going to allow that. There was school to attend and also the fact that she felt my sister and I would be a burden to the new mother, so she never allowed it. My sister and I decided to write a letter to the baby, something to make her feel that we love her. I wrote a simple letter, I still have the words carved in my memory

hello baby

Welcome to the world. Am your big sister

I love you

We added some money from our savings and then sealed both in a handmade envelope. I remember my uncle laughing hysterically when I handed the envelope over to him. I wondered why he laughed, it didn't feel funny to me, I was showing love to my little sister. He collected the envelope and thanked us. However, I didn't get to meet my new cousin until she was three months old and I fell in love with her more when I laid eyes on her, she was so cute.

Being older now, I realise why my uncle had laughed. He must have thought it was silly that we wrote a letter to a baby that is yet to fully open her eyes not to even talk of her knowing how to read, even my sister and I always laughed whenever we remember the letters. It feels silly and unbelievable now that am older, especially since my aunt kept the letters until her daughter could read them. I can't imagine what she thought when she read it.

no matter what, this letter will always be a lovely memory

Oh, this act is so sweet! 😍 I remember how my brother treated me when I was little. He never wanted a sibling. He wanted everything to be for him. 😃 Children can be very selfish, you know! In fact, they very often are. Therefore your act was wonderful. You should not be ashamed, but proud of it. It just shows what a good and loving person you have been since you were little. And I'm sure your cousin appreciates it.

He wanted everything to be for him.

😁😁😁, he was probably used to the idea of being an only child, but honestly children are be selfish, my niece never wants to share while her elder brother always share with her. Oh thank you for your lovely comment. It does feel funny remembering I wrote a letter to a baby. Am sure she liked it

Lol!😂😂 That was silly😂.

Well, it's not your fault, it's the love you had for the baby and the moment that caused it. I'm sure the mother of the baby read the letter on behalf of the little baby 🥰

This is the kind of post that brings a smile to our faces as we read it. The sentiment, of writing a letter to a baby, is sweet and innocent. It must have brought joy to your aunt and to the child when she finally read it. Such things mark the times in life we want to remember.

Thank you for sharing this memory with us. We appreciate that you engage with other authors in the community.

Oh gosh I hope they put that letter in a box for her to read when she is old enough too. THe feeling behind it is so lovely and I'm sure your uncle didn't mean to be mean when he laughed, although he probably should have been more encouraging! It's a very sweet letter and the love in your family seems very real and beautiful. A baby is so delightfully precious - i just became a grandma and I'm quite in love. I wrote a poem for him to remember me by when he is older - he definitely can't read it yet!

Her mother kept the letter for her till she could read it. Am sure he meant nothing with the laugh, he found it funny that's all.

Congratulations 🎉🎉, becoming a grandma is so wonderful. I remember when my mother became a grandma she was always happy. Am sure he would love and cherish the poem forever. Babies are so delightful indeed, there is just that natural love that flows from us whenever we hold them. It is amazing how we meet them one day and suddenly we could never imagine the world without them.

Send my love 😍😍😍 to your grandson

It was the joy in you that made you carve such a lovely letter to your cute cousin and it was the true love you had for her. I am also telling my big sis to get married on time so I can see her kids. I feel good seeing a new baby.
I popped in through Dreemport.

What a wonderful and thoughtful way to welcome your little cousin even though she couldn't read your sweet letter. It was worth the effort.

Awwn, that was a letter from an innocent little girl then and I'm very sure your cousin would love it when she gets to read it. I always love children for almost the same reasons as you and I do remember some parents who left their children in my care and I did a really good job, hehe. It's just so much fun having those little ones around, they give me the sense of responsibility and I just always try my best to be responsible all the time when I'm with them especially.

Thank you so much for this beautiful piece Geelocks, I enjoyed my reading ❤️.

Aw this was such a sweet thing to do when you were little and I am sure that it was very much appreciated by your aunt and cousin, when she could read... If I was you I'd be reminiscing about that letter and those times with your cousin... and how much the blessing of her coming into the world was anticipated and adored by you. Remind her of the letter - I wonder if she still has it or remembers it? SO special Geelocks. !LUV !ALIVE

I dropped in from Dreemport this evening.

We do sometimes whenever there is a family gathering. We always laugh over it, a very lovely memory.

I wonder if she still has it or remembers it?

I don't think she has the letter anymore, her mother kept it so she could read it but am not sure what happened to it. She remembers though, my aunt always reminds us of the letter
