[ENG/ESP] LOH # 295. The most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to me / Lo más vergonzoso que me ha pasado
Hello to all members of the community.

The most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to me occurred in a crowded coffee shop. I was there with the confidence of someone who's ordered a latte a thousand times. But that day, my mouth and my brain decided to go their separate ways. When the barista, a girl with a friendly smile, asked me, "Anything else?", I wanted to say, "No, thank you." However, what came out was a resounding, loud, "Yes, kiss me!"
The silence was absolute. Not an awkward silence, but one of those heavy, audible silences. The barista froze, the coffee steaming in her hand, her eyes widening. Behind me, the entire line had heard. I felt a heat rise from my neck to the roots of my hair, a fever of pure embarrassment. I stammered, trying to explain that it had been a mistake, that I meant to say thank you, but my voice became an unintelligible babble. I paid with a large bill, left the change as a tip (much more than I should have), and left without looking back, my coffee forgotten on the counter.

For a week, I relived the scene over and over, every night. The "Yes, kiss me!" echoed in my head like a broken record. I promised myself I'd change coffee shops, move to another city if necessary.
But one day, telling my friend Carlos about it amidst nervous laughter, something shifted. Seeing his incredulous face and hearing his booming laughter transformed the anecdote. It was no longer the day I'd made a fool of myself, but the day my subconscious had a comedic moment worthy of a movie. I began to see it from an outside perspective, and it was ridiculous, absurd, incredibly funny.

Now, when I tell this story, it's not to apologize for my clumsiness, but to celebrate our ability to laugh at ourselves. That story taught me that embarrassment is just the prelude to a good anecdote and that the most human moments, those in which our brain's filter switches off, are the ones that connect us most with others. After all, we all have an unintentional "kiss me" waiting to be shared.

No, I think she was more scared than I was. But I think if she had kissed me, I would have fallen to the floor in embarrassment.

No, I've never been back to that place, although I think the girl is no longer there. I'm glad I made her smile.
