Review of the most Popular Dapps

Decentralised Blockchains may be seen as a catalyst for social and political change but one of the defining features of the Crypto community is the passion and energy they put into their projects.

Daaps

In the last year Dapps or Decentralised Applications have exploded in popularity and now extend the use case of decentralised blockchains far beyond peer to peer cash, Dapps may even be the use case that takes Decentralised Blockchains mainstream.

I have been away from Crypto for some time and I am now on a journey to #RediscoverCrypto. In this post I am analysing a few sites that show stats of the different Dapps to see which are the Killer Apps that people use most today.

Data

There are three popular sites I know of for getting data on Dapps

Interestingly none of them agree on the numbers but analysing all 3 gives a good insight into the broad usage. The following Analysis is kept high level and only looks at data for a point in time.

So where has the Crypto Communities energy and enthusiasm been put to use on over the last few years?

Activity

User Activity is the main criteria I am going to use for this analysis. Successful Projects convert Concepts to Users so I am intentionally being very user focused in this analysis.

To begin with a bit or perspective lets first look at some stats from Blocktivity which shows transaction activity by blockchain.

  • The Wax Protocol stands out so we will take a closer look at that in detail below.

So what Blockchains are the most popular for building Dapps on?
The following picture shows the Count of Apps (taken from dapp.com).

Dapps by Blockchain.jpg

  • Ethereum is the clear winner in terms of volume of Dapps
  • Many Dapps are not functional on various chains. I did a few experiments exploring the listings and many don’t work. Not sure if the projects are still live or just didn’t pass QA in the first place!

Ethereum is the chain with the largest number of Dapps by far but other chains have seen growth in 2021 driven by high Gas Prices

How do you cut out all the noise?

DApps

For the Chains with over 100 Dapps (and Hive) I have analysed the usage of the Daaps with > 1000 users in a 24 hour period. This filters out apps that are not functional from the analysis.
I was very surprised with how few there actually are.

Dapps with more than 1000 users in 24hrs (28/9/2021)

The following graph shows the apps with more than 1000 users on a particular day.

Dapps by Blockchain V2.png

  • Most Chains don’t have more than a few active DApps.
  • BSC stands out as the chain with the most active DApps

Dapp Pic

  • Most chains have only a handful of Dapps with > 1000 daily users
  • BSC stands out as having more apps than other chains with > 1000 daily users

Wax Protocol

Wax didnt make the above list as it has less than 100 apps.
I was curious to see what activity is going on on Wax as it is always highest on the blocktivity site. The following activity is taken from dappradar and shows the apps with the activity > 1000 in the 24 hours.

  • This shows Gaming again featuring prominantly

DApp Themes

  • Gaming is a big use case with Splinterlands from #hive as standing out.
  • The NFT market places are a current big use case across all blockchains.

Defi was a big theme in 2020 and continues in 2021 with many exchanges and tokens dominating usage.

If you are rediscovering crypto after an absence why not make a blog on Hive using the #rediscovercrypto and share with the community what you find.

Splinterlands is the biggest Hive dapp by far, but I wonder how many of their new signups have looked at others on this blockchain. I have seen some start blogging, but not everyone is a blogger. We need a variety of options. I've seen some people say they just want to do short stuff as on dbuzz.

The stats sites don't seem to record all the users. @dappradar says @risingstargame has 17 users when it has nearly 2000 active per day. It may depend on what data they look at.

The data on these sites is hit or miss. Id take it with a grain of salt but when you look at the ecosystem you get a sense of which apps are active and the quantum. There are only around 2k apps on ethereum considering all the money that has been invested the numbers are still very small. Hive has around 50 apps. Let's grow that number! I submitter my analytics tool to the hive projects page for inclusion :)

They can still be useful to see some trends. I use lots of Hive dapps all the time, but some barely show up there. Maybe the developers can work with them to get better reporting. We want people to see Hive is active.

Everything needs to be visible. The more light we can shine on the ecosystem the more adoption we will get. It's self propelling and builds trust in the platform.

Excellent information. I was a bit surprised to see HIVE on these lists, but I shouldn't have been. Of course ETH would have the most dapps as the have first mover advantage and are the second largest crypto behind BTC.

One thing that stands out to me is the growth and usage of Asian chains like Binance & Tron. I wonder how the China ban, what is this the 7th time, will affect usage on those chains?

Inserting point on tron and bsc. I'll look at these numbers in a few months to see the changes.

Any of the chains are still at a very small base in terms of usage. There are only 3 dappps on hive with more than 1000 users for the day i looked at. There are only 4 or 5 on ethereum. This really surprised me.

Ya, those numbers are ridiculously low when you consider the supposed popularity and age of some chains. We still have a long way to go.
