Ladies of Hive Community Contest #285.

¡Bendiciones amigas de Ladies of Hive!

Hacer ejercicios_20260422_170015_0000.png

Ladies of Hive Community Contest #285. How reading a book taught me that my health was in my hands.

¡Blessings friends of Ladies of Hive!

Hacer ejercicios_20260422_170122_0000.png

Happy and blessed afternoon, friends of LOH! Today I'm participating in a new initiative from Ladies of Hive Community Contest #285: "What is a book, YouTube video, movie, or life lesson about self-development that has truly impacted you? It could be about skills, money, purpose, relationships, health, or personal growth. Share what it taught you and why you would recommend it to others." Today I'll share how, through reading a book I had the opportunity to read, I became aware and learned that our health is in our hands. Sometimes we take everything for granted, and unfortunately, that's not the case. Our health is fragile, and we are what we eat, as my cardiologist once told me.

I'll start by telling you that when I was diagnosed with hypertension, I felt like my body was sending me a warning signal. For a while, I relied solely on medication without really understanding what was happening to my body and my health, or what I could do to change it. That's when I started searching for information online, reading about cardiovascular problems, and I discovered the ," by Dr. Michael Greger. What I read was amazing and completely transformed my perspective on my health. I understood that a large part of my well-being didn't depend on genetics, luck, or medication, but on the decisions I made every day: eating well, eating healthy, moving, staying active, and changing my lifestyle.

Haciendo ejercicios @emily2021

Since then, I've made it a habit to take an hour-long walk every day. I've also incorporated yoga, and of course, a more mindful, healthy, and balanced diet. This book not only gave me the information I needed, it empowered me over myself and my own health. For this reason, it's the resource I choose to share with you in this self-development journey.

I'll tell you a little about the book: "How Not to Die" This book was originally published in English. It's written by Dr. Michael Gregger, a physician specializing in nutrition and founder of the scientific website NutritionFacts.org, as well as a world-renowned speaker. Published in 2015, it immediately became a New York Times bestseller and has sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide.

Comer sano y saludable @emily2021

The book is divided into two parts: Part 1: The 15 Deadliest Diseases: It analyzes each of these 15 leading causes of death in the Western world, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure, among others, and for each of these diseases, it explains with scientific evidence how certain foods and habits can prevent or even reverse it.

Regarding high blood pressure, which caught my attention the most, the author explains that it is the number one risk factor for death worldwide, causing 9 million deaths a year. However, he also shows us that it is completely preventable and manageable with lifestyle changes.

IMG-20260422-WA0089.jpg

IMG-20260422-WA0094.jpg

IMG-20260422-WA0096.jpg

Haciendo mis estiramientos @emily2021

The second part of the book is a practical guide, where the doctor presents his "Daily Dozen." Here he explains 12 food groups that he recommends consuming each day to maintain optimal health. These foods include vegetables, all leafy green vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and water. It's not a restrictive diet but a sustainable lifestyle.

Today I want to share key ideas that I've learned and that have been very useful to me. 80% of our chronic diseases, including hypertension, which I've suffered from for over 20 years, are preventable with diet and exercise. Genetics only accounts for 10% to 20% of the risk; the other part is a consequence of our eating habits.

IMG-20260414-WA0108.jpg

IMG-20260422-WA0027.jpg

Mi caminata diaria @emily2021

Conventional doctors treat the consequences of diseases, not their causes. Nutrition is rarely taught in medical schools.

Another tip: walking every day for at least 30 minutes, along with a diet based on healthy whole foods, can drastically reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Exercise and healthy eating work in synergy; one enhances the other and they go hand in hand.

We have much more control over our health than we realize. Everyday choices are more powerful than any medication.

This book came into my life at the perfect time and when I needed it most. As someone with hypertension, I felt trapped in a cycle of medication, without understanding the true origin of the problem. I was plagued by fear, by anxiety for my health. When I understood that eating healthier was the best decision I could make, that's when my life began to change, thank God.

I also complemented my new eating habits with physical activity. I started exercising regularly, I also practice yoga, I walk for an hour every day, I'm more mindful of my sleep, and the results have been noticeable. I feel more energetic, my blood pressure levels have improved significantly, and above all, I've regained control of my own health. The book didn't tell me to stop listening to my doctors, but rather taught me to be an active participant in my healing and health process.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how their body works and what they can do to take care of it. I especially recommend it to those who suffer from chronic illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, because it will show them that they have more power over their health than they think. You don't need to be a doctor or nutritionist to understand it. It's written in very clear and simple language, with practical examples, and backed by scientists. In short, it's a life guide that can change not only how we eat, but also how we see ourselves.

IMG-20260414-WA0099.jpg

Tomar mucha agua @emily2021

Sometimes the greatest transformation begins when we decide to take care of our bodies, our health. "Eating to Stay Alive" taught me that health is a daily decision, not a destination. Every walk, every plate of healthy food, every yoga session is an act of self-love backed by science. If this book could positively impact my life, I'm convinced it can do the same for many others.

Well, friends, that's all for my participation in this interesting initiative. I also want to take this opportunity to invite @saffisara, @sacra97, and @amymari to participate...

You need to change the name of the book, @emily2021, to "How Not to Die" by Dr Michael Gregor, MD.

I totally understand what you have said, but someone wanted to find the book (English speaking) and it needs to be in the English title also, maybe just list the English title alongside?

This book was originally published in English under the name of How Not To Die by Dr. Michael Gregor, MD?
This would be good so the English-speaking people looking for it can find it.
