Hopping Docks: Walking the planks

For someone who has lived most of their life living up close and personal to the sea, there must be some sort of appreciation at the very sound of the waves, lapping the shore with their rhythmic tranquility. It has been said that even the color of the blue seas brings with it a sense of calmness and peace. I refuse to even try to deny the beauty and sense of peace that lay upon my soul.

20180626_140946.jpg

Walk this way! Oh, there goes that song again! But ignore Steven Tyler and follow me. On any given harbor, you are sure to find a couple of sailing clubs or boating/yacht clubs. I have found that for the right individual, it fosters feelings of cooperation along with fellowship. You can't deny the lessons learned, the friendships made and the coordination leveled up. I already left the boat, walking along the docks to land. The sun is shining today, the weather perfect for this time of year. A tad warm, but blown away by the sea breeze. Of course, in the winter we whine about the same exact thing when the sea breeze blows the icy wind towards us. But, that is a worry for tomorrow. Just look at the view you get today!

I want to thank @Tattoodjay for hosting the #WednesdayWalk challenge! It is a challenge that allows you to share what you see as you walk through your day. Show me where you walked today, I want to see what you got to see and hear what you have to say. If you want to do the challenge, drop him a link on his #WednesdayWalk post so he can try to visit yours! Whatever your day looks like, it is worth a walk-through. Just remember! You can't always have sunshine and rainbows, but, you can always have a #WednesdayWalk!

20180626_130742a.jpg

Put your feet up and watch your boat/ship/yacht or dingy come in. It matters not what it is, as long as your boat can float, yes? It is early and I get my coffee with a splash of half and half, it makes it creamy and always makes me want just a little bit more. I am the only one there, so I wander back down to the pier and look for my friends. I reconsider that and think first things first. I lift my face to the sun and drink it all in. Then I look for them.

20180626_130723c.jpg

I look at the sun shining on the water and also the shade that is covering the different parts of it. Some of the structures, like commercial piers and docks, tend to cast shadows over marine habitats. Every action can have unintended consequences when we are talking about nature. I used the black and white shot because I wanted to see the impact the docks and buildings have on the water. As you can see, it has a bit of a shadow now and more will come later with the shifting of the sun. Shadowing has an effect on underwater life.

20180626_141244a.jpg

Smaller fun boats to pass the time, fishing, sailing and just spending time on the water. I fish off a pier sometimes, but, I go on the boat more frequently than not. You can go from here to there in your fishing vessel at a much faster pace, covering more area. I spent hours walking up and down the docks looking over the different boats.

20180626_141211 a.jpg

I have to admit, I didn't see many seagulls today, which surprised me. Don't we always see them if we are within 20 miles, sometimes 50 miles of the sea? I do! But, I did get to walk 1.5 miles right around the harbor. Surprised me! There is that word again! It is a surprise Denise day. I had no intention of spending that much time there and had intended to wander up into the town for a few minutes. Next time. There is always a next time.

20180626_130710c.jpg

I walk over to the other end of the pier to give you a broader look at the docks. All different sizes of water toys are here, from the smallest fishing vessels to the very nicely appointed yachts to take you far and away from real life for a moment or three. But, so you know, it isn't real, it is just an illusion for a bit. I show it off in black in white to keep me and you centered in reality.

20180626_140711.jpg

All I have are my words, armed in my mind, written in pen, stand by stand. Oh, yes. Still by hand. It has a different feel. Altered not by keys, backspace, and delete, I write, erase, tear it to pieces and start all over again. And again.

It’s my way. I walk out to the deep end of the page and dive right in.

20180609_084358a.jpg

I wave bon voyage and I am off again, but before I go, I just want to thank @tattoodjay for his #WedensdayWalk. Later than planned, but, I got one in. It happens sometimes. I leave you with an armful of lilies, one of my favorite flowers. #alwaysaflower to color my day. And just like that, this post is over! Come back tomorrow and we'll do it again!

Our Flag

She waves for my attention,
So free upon the breeze.
The sun reflects her stars and stripes,
As proud as she can be.

She tells a tale of people lost,
Who came to find their way
And carried on through every loss,
To bring us here today.

She reminds me of the brave who fought
To keep our country strong
And shouts at me of victories
To right egregious wrongs.

She whispers to our children
Of all this country has to give
And begs that they stand up for her
And give thanks for how they live.

She cries to me of apathy,
Of prejudice and hate,
Of disrespect for what she stands,
And a Constitution we forsake.

She demands that I acknowledge her
And what she means to me
And dares me to imagine life
If she should cease to be.

And still in Glory she unfurls
And gives me hope again
For a people reunited,
And a country on the mend.

So each time I see her wave at me,
I'll stop and gaze above
And take a moment to respect
This country that I love.

You forgot the french fries. The seagulls would have certainly come if you had french fries. 🍟

Looks like a wonderful walk. Anywhere near the water is certainly THE place to be.

Rather a dream. At least for me. Owning and living on a sailboat. It is reality for many people. They are living it. A lifestyle. I see that many people like/love it. And not necessarily the huge yahts. There is a Facebook group called "Tiny Liveaboards (Less than 33 feet)", and there are 30 000 members in it. Many people are interested in this.

It's a nice dream. Dreams are free and I found that for some things in life, they are the only way I will see some things. I am okay with that. Thirty-three feet is pretty big for a single person living on it. At one time, you were talking about a really tiny one, which would have proven not great once you get older and less mobile.

It is a huge interest in them. Growing up, we had a boat that slept 8 people. It was fun and nice, but, it had a lot of upkeep and I know my dad loved it, but, I remember the work it took. I think it costs more and takes more effort to keep it nice. Unless you are having a marina take care of it.

My brother lived on a boat, but, it was moored right on the Marina property. He was a Marine Mechanic that worked at the Marina. LOL, So that cannot possibly count. They did everything for him. :)

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you are having a great day!

You commented very well on everything there, Mrs @dswigle.
Thanks for sharing it here and it reminds me of the little harbor I grew up in there and had to leave because of my choice of permanent job.

It is a favorite place for many people and every time I look back at the photos of the pier and the activities there, there is always a longing to come back again, maybe someday. I want to spend my old age there.

Have a nice day

Living on the water or close to it feels peaceful, doesn't it? I don't think I have ever felt like there was a better place to live.

I live to visit mountains, but, I can hear the sea calling when I think about moving there. :)

Thanks for dropping by and leaving your words.

Absolutely gorgeous Denise:)
I too am a sea living person, in all the countries I have lived and worked all over the world, it is usually within 30 miles of the coast. Peaceful, soothing and enchanting are the sound of the waves and the smell of the salt fresh air.
The sky looks awesome too and I as I type this at 5.38am we finally have a blue sky morning, so I will be popping down to our sea, seagulls well I am get them as soon as I open the front door:)
Thank you for sharing this, I can hear the boats jilting in the marina:)

Usually, I get the seagulls to open the door for me! There were seagulls, but not bunches of them like usually do! I'm glad you have blue skies today! It's been raining regularly over there for a week!

Thank you for stopping by!! Have a stellar day! 5:38 am! You are late! :)

Looks such a beautiful port area and you know I love being by the water so love this post
That is kind of strange the lack of seagulls maybe someone near by had ice cream or food particularly chips oops French Fries and they had all headed that way on a raid lol

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

That was the strangest thing, wasn't it? Just look at the pictures, not one seagull in them. Perhaps you are right, but, from the time our boat pulled up to its dock until I left, there were some, but, not the flock there usually is. I just felt like it was rather odd. Of course, you could be right. If there was a free feed going on, they would have abandoned the area for greener pastures in a heartbeat! They are not loyal! :)

There is a nice town right there with all kinds of food, so perhaps you are right. :)

It is always so fun to share a walk with you, I am so sorry it was so late, I jut couldn't get it together yesterday!

Ohh indeed they are not loyal at all, but it is funny that hardly any where there, thinking about it generally I always see some gulls near the water, have occassionaly seen much bigger flocks of them than normal, but seldom see none

and no need to say sorry :)

To be fair, there were some, but, it is weird to look back on the pictures and see none! :)

I swear it is not a backdrop! :)

I get ya, the sound of the ocean (even though it isn't waves but just water going up and down) is just super soothing. In my recent week on the water on a sailing boat I found this even more, it was so relaxing to always have this sound around you.

We live far from the ocean so really appreciating the snaps of the harbour mucho!

That is true. It is the water going up and down. I was born and raised on the Atlantic Ocean and just the sound of the waves hitting the sand could be heard every night.

Pure heaven. It is a whole different world on the water, isn't it? Thanks for stopping by and leaving your words!

Hello Denise, I have always wanted to be able to live by the sea. It's so relaxing to hear the sound of the waves.
You had a nice walk around that harbor. I love to see the boats. I could sit in one of those chairs in your photo for hours watching. Have a lovely day 🤗

One of the coffee shops put the chairs there! :) It gets more use than the tables as people love to watch the boat traffic come in and out.

Living by or on the water is relaxing, although many people prefer the mountains or forest. That makes it easier for all to have exactly what they want! Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful day!

There is something for everyone, it is true. I have lived most of my life in Caracas therefore surrounded by mountains and I love it. But if I could choose I prefer the sea.
A lovely Friday to you 😊

Such a beautiful walk Denise 😁☀️ Along the water in the harbour. Yes soak it all in the sun… the nice cool breeze that comes from the sea 🌊
It’s great to wander around there… see the different boats. Having a great coffee ☕️ meeting friends 😎

My moves have been all over. From along the coast, to villages inland to big cities to rural… I experienced everything. So it’s all a mix.
I do love the coast, but also hills and forests. 😉🥰

Have a wonderful day today 👋🏻☀️

As you know, mine has been too, but, I think that when I count my childhood on the water, it weighs a little heavier on the side water. :0

I hope your new place is on/close to the water, but if it is New England you are never far from the water.

The only real rural was a summer house close to the Canadian border but on one of the Bays from Lakes Superior. But, it has been nice experiencing all the different types of living. Everything has something different to offer. I think they are all good in their own way.

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day!

Yes Denise ☺️
It does sound it pulls you to the coast much more than it does me.

It won’t be close by… but like you said every thing New England is actually close by. So we can travel if we crave the coast 😎 that way we see more from the states.

Oh that sounds like a beautiful area close to the Canadian border on a bay.
Exactly everything has something different to offer and we always make some compromises. But as long as we are healthy and happy. It’s all good 🥰😊

You are welcome 🤗 thanks a lot! Enjoy your day further.

It probably does. I was born on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and was raised there. We learned how to fish and clam and go crabbing early in life and loved it. All of my brothers had boats and still do. We learned to waterski on the ocean, not a lake, much more challenging. :) I had no idea people did it on a lake when I was very young.

The Canadian border was awesome. That was just sold right after Covid started and it was nice to see another family, excited to have it and give it some more love. It was perfect.

Having lived in different situations, not of my choosing, I never dreamed people didn't like where they lived! I say go with it and have fun! There is always something redeeming to find. Compromise is essential, but, teaches you to grow. You nailed it: It's all good.

Enjoy the rest of your day! 💚

That’s pretty cool to be raised there. It gives you such a different view. You learn other things others don’t learn far inland 😎 lots of extras.
Yep, the waterski bit, it sure is a lot more challenging hahaha than just a lake.

That’s nice to hear another family bought it and giving it some more TLC.

Exactly… ☺️😉🤩 and you make “home” where the heart ❤️ is…
Thanks I am 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻 You do the same!

I was happy to have these people show up right away looking for a place like that. It had 80 acres and a barn, sauna, and house. 40 hay, 40 forests, and 2 ponds.

It was made for kids and tree forts, raising ducks, and watching nature. I was glad to have it and grateful to be able to pass it on.

I am!! I am ready for dinner! I hope you are cooking tonight!

Great that in that moment they showed up, searching for exactly that.
Sounds like lots of space… ideal for kids indeed 😎🤓 building forts and truly be kids.
I can imagine, as you do grow with it.

Bon appetite hope it was nice. As I think you must be finished by now Denise 😁
Yep, cooked myself this evening. Made noodles with stir fry veggies and tofu, with pickled veggies on the side.

Great photos! It has been a while since I walked down along the docks like that. It reminds me of the some of the time I spent in Rhode Island when I was a kid. I mean sure, we have harbors like this around Michigan, but not quite on this scale. Thanks for sharing this awesome post and walk!

Ha! Rhode Island has some of the nicest harbors! That is where my mom is from. :) That is exactly where I was. I cannot believe I didn't mention it! This could have easily been here with the scale of vessels.

Thank you for stopping by! It is always a pleasure!

It is truly beautiful there. I still have a boatload (Get it? LOL) of relatives who are willing to come dockside and pick you up if you come by sea. At Narragansett Avenue, there is 40 steps, and sometimes that is where I will start the walk if I don't have that much time. :) Either way, if you are there for a couple of days, you can do it all.

I go anytime as I have people that live there, but, if I didn't I would not go in the summer but after Labor Day.

Thanks for sharing you day with us, i live in the northern part of my country and they are very few river, and those rivers are polluted by alot of things, my mother always makes sure, to keep us from water, i don't actually know her reason for that, maybe it because of the pollution i don't know or she have an experience that she don't want to share, but she constantly make sure that we are not anyway close to the sea, now am studying marine engineering and swimming is one of the basic requirements you need for the course, it now that i am even learning how to swim. Anyways your habour looks amazing, the fishing boat the walkway and the captures are just amazing.

Perhaps at one time the rivers were polluted or had something in them that people were not allowed in them. Hard to tell.

Interesting that you are studying marine engineering! :) But, yes, swimming is a basic requirement for anyone working on the water. Good luck and just relax! It comes easier then.

The harbor is nice and I love spending time down there.

It's a very beautiful place, is the very very one in the harbor private property of a rich person?

All of the ones in the harbor are private property. Most are being docked (or parked there) for a short period of time while on land to eat lunch and a few are berthed there (when not being used) for an extended period of time.

Time always flies when spend on or near the water. I think you really need to get yourself a boat and spend some quality time on the water. Thats what life is really about, that and fishing lol.
